They are't comparable though. A game that is on early access is made, it's a game, it's being sold, and it's coming out. Me throwing money at it isn't going to change those facts. It's essentially an even worse version of pre-ordering,, since you're paying for your game while it's still a buggy mess, and without any guarantee it'll be any good by the time it comes out.
With kickstarter, there is an exceptionally high possibility that if they don't get enough money, then their game isn't even going to get off the ground. By donating to the project, i'm helping to get an idea for a game made.
Two different systems, for two different purposes.
This is a terrible situation, and now it seems it's just getting uglier, with developer and Yogscast pointing their finger at each other, and both trying to shift the blame from themselves.
Two things to consider:
First, Yogscast and Winterkewl screwed up, badly. There is absolutely no excuse for this. Let this be a lesson to people when using kickstarter. Before you throw money at people, simply because they are a brand like Yogscast, do some bloody research into the people actually making the game. As far as i cna tell, Winterkewl are no font of industry experience, and were not in a position to handle this properly. The people behind the project are just as important as the idea they are peddling.
Second, this is an unfortunate, but nevertheless, fundamental risk of kickstarter. Just because something gets the required amount of money to pass the kickstarter, does not guarantee that the game will actually be made. This plays into the abve, mostly, but myriad things can go wrong in game development, and just because they asked for money, doesn't necessarily mean all that money will be enough, or that it'll be well spent.
This is a sh*tty situation, it really is, but with kickstarter, things like this will happen from time to time. Backers acting wisely can hopefully negate these things from happening further.
@hitomo @shingui5 @Chr0noid " can you name 3 of those 'fantastic games you seem to have informations about?" Playing this game, huh? Ok, i'll humour you.
The Banner Saga Shadowrun Returns Wasteland 2 Divinity: Original Sin Shovel Knight Mercenary Kings Broforce Broken Age FTL Risk of Rain
Nt to mention things like Pillars of Eternity, Tides of Numenara, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and plenty more games that are still on the way.
There are good sides of kickstarter and bad sides. Just because this one catastrophic failure occurred, doesn't negate the other fantastic games that could have only happened because of Kickstarter.
To restate my comment, i don't think too much information is a bad thing necessarily. Information is good for consumers to make an informed choice. What is a negative however, is the way publishers spin their information, or just outright fabricate and lie, to create as much hype as possible, getting people to throw money at something before they even really know if it's any good.
