No such thing as "Debters" prison. Also what are the punishments for not paying it back? If any?

  1. Garnished wages
  2. Damaged credit score
  3. Ineligibility to take more loans for college

It is not a situation with literal handcuffs, but with effects such as those, some may find prison food as a sustainable source for survival.

Yeah, it's messed up.

*gasp* you mean when people borrow money they're expected to pay it back? This is shocking /sarcasm.

but it will be exactly like universitys work in the USA right now, they are basicly controlled by companys that finance them and wich get loyal ruthless scientists in return ... education has to be organised free from the influence of economie, industry and capital ... its like the press and media would be controlled by companys to inlfuence political opinions in the country ... oh wait ... ^^

Then the only solution is to not offer college to those who cannot afford it. The problem is simply that too damn many people are going to college and not enough jobs for them. Its when the government started to decide that everyone should be able to go to college that we started having this problem.

Education should NOT be reserved for the rich..the top 1%. Everybody should have the right to a high quality education no matter their background.

Nobody should be denied the right to pull themselves outta poverty.

It's given to anybody who works for it.

Giving something to everybody just deflates any value that it might have.

@Renevent42: He didn't give enough information to buy into that. For all you know he is lying or his parents paid it.

His second comment is still stupid.

No paid for it mostly myself. Scholarships helped a little bit.

How is it stupid? If you borrow money, you should be expected to pay it back. Don't make bad decisions that lead to you being unable to pay it back.

I assume his objection to the statement is similar to mine. Frankly, I thought it was a tongue-in-cheek joke.

You're statement was, "Shouldn't have gotten the loan if they couldn't pay it back."

However, the entire point of college is to acquire increased earnings power in the future. And the entire point of college loans is to acquire the funds needed to get that increased earnings power which will allow you to pay off the loans in the first place.

To deny college loans to anyone who cannot pay them off with their current earnings power is to severely cripple even the basic foundations of economic mobility and is against the very principle of college loans.

My point is simply that loans are expected to be paid back at some point by their very nature.

If people expect to yield benefit from getting a degree with increased earning potential, then they need to take responsibility for researching and seeking a good degree that will help them earn more money in some form.

As they are now, many programs do not have good earning potential, but making a mistake does not mean you can skip out on responsibilities. It's a dangerous ideology in encouraging people to not do so.

The ones who gives the loans have to be realistic as well. The chance of them getting a job in their respective field should be taken into account. If more than 40% of those who have a student loan haven't made a payment in the last year or are late on their current one... Then I won't jump so easily to the conclusion that it is only the students who are at fault here.

Well no, but that's how business works, they seek to make money, and high risk = high interest rates.

That's just how business and the real world work.

Let me guess, you two geniuses think that picture is legit and not made by a right wing nut job with an agenda? Am I right?

So, Leftist, what right wing nut job agenda are you referring to?

The anti education anti women's studies and other degrees they don't like, make all liberals look dumb agenda of course. It's not obvious?

It's easy to dismiss reality when it's painful and just call it an agenda, rather than look at some facts.

- Many degrees are useless and offer no real skills.

- Woman's studies falls into this category, and will not earn anybody a job.

- These degrees require time and money that could have been used elsewhere.

- Woman's studies majors are easy targets because not only do they have no real skills, but their sjw whining is off the charts, and that makes them easy targets to be attacked. When you're useless, hateful with a bad ideology, you're going to get flack.

Harsh truths.

@plageus900: I'm not sure what a degree in women's studies is used for but it clearly isn't for getting a good paying job. I have nothing against anyone studying any subject in college though. I also have no prejudice against the often maligned basket weavers. It seems like a legit hobby to me.

This picture is too on the nose. The right wing radio hosts are always bringing up women's studies and African American studies as examples of what is wrong with liberals and education. It's their calling card.

They're right though.

The world only cares about what it can get from you, and the sooner people realize that, they better off they will be. Woman's studies provides no real marketable skills; nothing is really gained in this world by people wasting their time and money on such a degree. She did get one valuable skill; mixing drinks, but that doesn't cost 60,000 dollars and 6 years of training. That's exactly what's wrong with these degrees; they add nothing of value to society; these degrees and the things they learn do not make them more productive. All these degrees seem to really produce is whiny, and entitled children who ironically get very little in the country because of their poor choices.

@still_vicious: Physics! That's awesome. A good friend of mine has a degree in physics and Is the head of the science department at one of the better public schools. He makes a decent living but I have no idea what his student loan situation was or is. I believe he got scholarships.

It's fun, I love to learn new things, and it fits the bill. I've been moving more in the direction of programming than hard science since college, but it was a great foundation in going into engineering.

Such a stupid comment. Learn the reality of what it takes to make it in this country.

I paid my loan off and make a lot, seems like I do.

Are they really ridiculous though? Interest rates are proportionate to the risk that the banks take; if 40% aren't paying their loans back, then it's safe to say it's a high risk.
