If your set is 1080p then it will display 1080p, and will upscale 720 or 1080i to 1080p. If your set is not 1080p it will still accept a 1080p signal but will then scale it to the set's native resolution. The glitches you speak of have to do with the set's scaling ability. All tvs' can accept a 1080p signal, but whether you will actually see 1080p on your screen depends on the set itself. Your set I think is a 720p native resolution, so it accepts 1080p and scales it to 720p. That being said, a 1080p signal scaled down to 720 will always look better than 480p scaled up to 720.
