Ok, i'm not a "huge" HP fan - havnt read the books but the movies i have seen. I'm a MMO fan and have played many different MMOs in all different categories.
Now people have been saying you dont know where/when it would take place. Its a MMO- it evolves. Even if they start at the stage where HP was young EG: first movie, and gradually evolve the game into something bigger.
This will automatically open the door for the story to evolve aswell - look at LOTR MMO, that was a good book, movie. Ok the LOTR series are more aimed at a mature audiance, while HP is slowly leaning towards an all age audiance where anyone can watch. Now at the time the first couple movies came out i was 15 and the movies were abit well, childish. Now that im older and the movies are aswell, they appeal to me alot more.
Things abot MMOs not suitable for young kids, well look at WoW.The majority are young kids/adults ranging from 10-18. Now saying no mature players play (8million or so damn players so yeah).
Terms of gameplay for HP. Now you can change the "techniques"-"methods" abit while doing a MMO or a standard game. You don't have to JUST have players using wands and staffs ect. Have them using there mind and body (like a normal mage in wow eg.). Or have Energy (i dunno like dbz?), then more of a martial arts that uses magic to manipulate movement for close combat fighting.
You can in terms of the "world" you play make it huge. Ok you got hogwarts wat is the main gathering as we all know in the movies etc. How about other "dimensions" or "regions" where there are other schools/gatherings.
You can have many fun little games/professions in the game. EG: for games- you can have either maybe a PvP (i dunno how that will work) and or a quiddich match, that where you make a team/clan and compete against others.
Professions - same like you get in all games, where you can study/learn your professsions in school (thats the reason you go to school) and you can gradually gain knowledge on for example potions, then in order to obtain special knowledge known by the masters of alchemy ect you have to go on a quest far away or something.
For training, once again you might "start" "noobie area" at one of the schools where you might be there for the first 10 lvls? and then move onto a more advanced region ect (like you do in other mmos).
Ok this was just a little brainstorm and just like other games/movies/books - they all can somehow be made into a MMO - either mmofps, mmorts, mmorpg ect.
They all use the same concepts in design all up, and if done correctly by the developers, they got themselves a winner.
So my conclusion, Harry Potter as a MMORPG - IF done right, i think it would be a hit.
