I bought a PS3 today and was really excited, but my excitement was short-lived because my PS3 isn't able to play a single PS2 game I own! I tried playing GTA: San Andreas, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Gran Turismo 4 and SmackDown! v/s RAW 2006 but kept getting a message that said something like: "The PlayStation Two format disc you have inserted doesn't appear to be compatible with your PS3. Sony may release an upgrade in the future to enable this title to function properly". I'm just totally shocked.

My new PS3 is a 60GB PAL, region 5 (european) model (model type: CECH-CO8). I bought it because the 60GB PS3 is reputed to have the PS2's EMOTION ENGINE built into it. That means that it should theoretically be able to run PS2 games with minimum fuss (even the 'Read before Posting' thread on this forum says that the 60 GB PS3 is able to run about 99% PS2 games, although this doesn't appear to be the case with my machine!)

This whole situation is really worrying me, so any help or advice will be genuinely appreciated.

So does that mean that the rumours are true? Are we really going to have a superslim PS2? And if so, when?

I'm not sure about the price, but yes there is a new even lighter PS2 being released this year.megagene

Really?! That sounds awesome! My old PS2 is nearly busted. I was planning on getting a new 60 GB PS3. However, I think they're really hard to find these days :(

If the rumour is true, then perhaps I can buy a new PS2 and a 40 GB PS3 (which will work out to roughly the same amount as buying a 60 GB PS3) :)

I read about it on this very website. I suppose only time will tell if this is for real.

Is it true that a new PS2 is going to be launched in 2008, that's even slimmer than the slimline, has no external power adapter and best of all: will be priced less than a hundred dollars? Or is this just another rumour?

I'm not able to run my games in progressive scan display. Is this because I'm using composite cables instead of component cables on my PS2? My TV has component output ports as well as composite ports. I have an LG 29" CRT Flat TV.

Will using component cablesallow me to run my gamesin progressive scan mode?

I want to play GoW/GoW2 with progressive scan enabled. I'm not able to do so at the moment. I have a 29" CRT Flat TV from LG. My TV has component output ports in addition to composite ports.

So if I purchasecomponent cables and connect them to my TV, will I be able to run these games on progressive scan mode?

Is it true that Sony will be releasing a smaller 'Slim PS2' without an external 'power brick' for less than a hundred dollars?

Anddoes the PS3 support DivX playback? If it doesn't, are there any firmware/ 3rd partyupdates available so that you can watch DivX movies on your PS3?

I had the same dilema and after a couple of months of debating/looking/bidding on ebay/calling around, etc....I bought the 80gb. I checked my current ps2 library for B.C. on the site linked above....and I had nearly COMPLETE playability on them w/ the 80gb...so I went for the bigger HD. I don't see myself really buying any ps2 games anymore...so why would the BC be an issue, if my 80gb will play what I already own? Plus, very hard to find NEW 60's. A few places had some "returns" which scare the hell outta me, and they're STILL $499....which is the same as the 80gb/w/ motorstorm. Used 60's on ebay are bringing $390-$450 for just the system.....and they're in GOODNESS knows WHAT kind of shape?!?! Scary. I'm keeping my working ps2 for any random game that troubles me while playing it on the 80. GratefulRed

Thanks for clarifying that for me Vendrena andJared. Now let's suppose I manage to find a nice 60GB PS3. Would it actually run games just as smoothly as a PS2? Would there be any noticeable graphical/ gameplay issues?
