Pretty clever of Nintendo to only release 100,000 units at a time to retailers for pre-orders so they can continue to get these headlines to artificially generate hype for their product. Nintendo has an established history of under-supplying products to meet expected demand: Amiibo, NES Classic, Zelda 3DS special editions, etc.
I definitely won't be among that very optimistic number of Switch owners. The Wii U is the last Nintendo console I'll ever own, and Zelda: BotW is the last Nintendo product I'll ever buy.
I don't really find the Switch clear or compelling at all. How many of you are going to walk around with this 6.2" tablet and the joy-cons in your pocket, and carry your smartphone with you at the same time? Yeah, that's what I thought... This could have been a great product if it included even the most rudimentary smartphone features: SMS/MMS, talk, 3rd-party apps, etc. A lot of us Nintendo old guard would be happy to trade in our iPhones and Androids for a bare-bones smartphone that pretty much sucks at everything a smartphone should do, but also happens to be the best mobile gaming unit in town.
The world saw how popular Pokemon Go was, and that was a F2P mobile game. Just imagine how many more units of the Switch would have sold if gamers had the capability to play full fledged titles like Zelda, Mario, and Smash Bros on a device that also functioned (albeit basic functions) as a smartphone. The Switch at present is the device that the Wii U should have been back in 2012, but today it needs to be more than what Nintendo have revealed it to be if it's going to succeed.
Thanks Nintendo, but I'd prefer spend my money on something that's worth it. How about a key chain sized Game Boy Advance pre-loaded with 100 1st-party GBA games for $50?
$300 for a system that competes with both tablets/smartphones, and consoles, yet somehow is technically inferior to both while costing more than either one. Well done Nintendo, you have my nomination for a Darwin award.
I don't expect Nintendo to make the Switch high enough spec to output 4k while docked (especially at a $199 launch price), but it's going to be terrible if they don't have HDR support. Nintendo's color gamut would look great in HDR, even at 1080p.
