I don't see the connection between the two outside massive characters and them being TP. Space Marine reminds me more of Darksiders than Gears and even that is a stretch.

FlailingFire

I just want to say that I AM 100% NOT one of those people who think Warhammer 40k: Space Marine (or WH40K in general) is a copy of anything. But I also cannot with good consience say that at least some parts in THIS particular video game -version were not inspired by other hit-games. But honestly back when Gears 1 was announced and shown, my first thought was "Whoa, is this a Warhammer 4K game?!." But, just because it's WH40K doesn't mean a *video game* based on it cannot possibly borrow stuff. Games Factory isn't very involved in this as far as I know.

Took this pic by myself, from Youtube-videos, so excuse me for the quality. The actual game has more in common with Dynasty Warriors, though, but at some moments its eerily similar to Gears Of War... NOT because it's a Third Person Shooter, but the way you actually maneuver and the way the HUD-menu looks:

EDIT: REMEMBER, scroll the image to the right to see the full image... On the left is Space Marine of course, on the right is the original GeoW.

I original GoW nearly looks superior.

Well, if you think so, it's probably because that Gears-shot is from the PC version.

[QUOTE="tume-x"][QUOTE="R3FURBISHED"]

[QUOTE="Birdy09"]. VALVE are making thier own games, or rather, buying up talented designers and making that designers dream design a reality. Team Fortress was a mod... TF2 owns, Portal was one girl's design and is now a premium franchise, and ofcourse not to mention Counterstrike, none of these top tier franchises would be where they are now if it wasnt for VALVE's development teams.Birdy09

That is my point - Valve needs to create its own games. Another story driven FPS (like Half-Life...or Valve could figure out there is a number after two) would be awesome.

With the exclusion of Half-Life no game they have created is their own idea. That is unfortunate, especially for such a talented studio.

Yeah... and I don't understand why people always say to this "well, they ARE now part of Valve so it is a Valve game, *lalalalala I can't hear you, Valve is awesome, lalalala*". You're not incorrect when you say that, but it's still wasn't Valve's original idea until they bought the studio halfway in the production.

Counter Strike = fan-made mod for Half Life
Team Fortress = same deal
Left 4 Dead = A mod for Counter Strike: Source
Portal = An experimental student game
Portal 2 = A free indie puzzle game
Dota = A mod for Warcraft 3

Matters why? I would rather have a company take the brilliant ideas of community enthusiasts and make thier games a reality than have "insert generic Half-L:ife story driven shooter #1235413254325" .

That list of games is more impressive than Episode 3 or hell even Half-Life 3.... VALVE knows this. More Half-Life would be underwhelming in the current saturated shooter market. Its common sense.

TF2, Portal, Left 4 Dead are shooters yes, but very different from whats available. Half-Life isnt... its another "aliens have invaded" with some nice charm.

and DOTA is a new genre for VALVE.

Yep, your reply is the perfect example of what I meant... *lalalala can't hear you Valve bought them, it's a Valve game*... NO, it's not. Why does it matter? So, do you think that an id Software game is a Bethesda game? Or that a Sucker Punch game is actually Sony's gem/baby? (They own them).

No you don't. Why does Gabe always get all the credit? Valve hasn't made a game from scratch (or invented something by themselves) since Half Life 2. Usually people always say that's "evil" or it makes a company bad when they buy out ideas or companies ("damn you EA!! Maxis!! Bullfrog, noooo!!"), but oh no, Valve is God...

I mean, I LOVE Valve-games and I play all of them daily and I have my own Steam-group/clan for CS:S and Left 4 Dead, but seriously, they're NOT Valve's. They didn't develop it. Turtle Rock did CS and Left 4 Dead. Valve just went "Derp" and bought them, they took the easy way out.

No, Max Payne 3 will never come out... Although I've heard of a game with a bald, hairy and scruffy guy with weight problems shooting people in broaght daylight in Mexico, made by completely different developers. Luckily it has nothing to do with with the Sin City-ish, dark film noir detective/comic-style games that *always* happen at night & while it's raining, with a slim guy with dark hair and badass weapons.

Wow, I can't believe the people on this thread that haven't heard of Dota 2 (a mega-hyped VALVE title that people have been waiting for a long time!)... I don't even play that many RTS-games and I know what Dota is :/

It is a shame that such a great piece of literature was reduced to a clone of a game that was almost a parody of Greek religion. I enjoyed the Catherine demo, but I am not sure I want to jump into the full game right now.Zeviander
It's funny you should say that, because your avatar and signature ARE ALSO from a game that's an action re-visioning of Dante's Inferno (Devil May Cry)... Dante and Vergil (or Virgil in the book), lol... although DMC is the father of hack'n'slash-games - so it's definately not cloning anything. I thought Dante's Inferno was one of the best action games in ages, it did everything GOW did but better. It had more RPG-elements (two branches to develop your character, Relics to equip in 2-4 different slots to enhance your character; like to get more XP out of kills with a certain weapon or have re-generating Mana, plus you needed to Level Up those Relics too so they were not insta-badass items), more focus on drama and story, tighter controls and better level-design and artwork.

I was really young (I'm 27 come August 22nd; getting Deus Ex:IW for PC as a b-day present from my buddies, nice ;))... The earliest memory of mine is my older brother (he's 15 years older than me, still gaming hard!!) getting a Sinclair Spectrum with a cassette deck/player... It had a few games, mostly from RARE(!), or as they were called back then, Ultimate Play the Game. It had that Safari-game (which also got modern ports on GBA and a cancelled one by the new "dead" RARE -_-) in which you collected treasure and avoided wild animals etc. It rarely worked (waited for a looong time for the cassette to read and load, for nothing lol)... It also had an R-Type -kind of game (maybe it was R-Type?).... but the one that SOLD me and made me a gamer: JETPAC!! Jetpac is still burned into my mind as a true classic, it even got a modern port on XBL, and some free fan made remakes for PC. And let's not forget Arkanoid (I'm not sure if it was actually Arkanoid on the Spectrum, or Breakout or something)... Then came some other stuff, but after that my dad got our family a NES (from our neighbors computer/videogame store) and an IBM PC (286, 7 herz processor lol) from our cousins. I played Ye Air Kung Fu, SMB, Karateka, Kung-Fu Master aka Spartan X in Japan, etc.. that made me get into fighting/beat'em'ups. On the PC I played Arkanoid, Caterpillar (a snake-game), a free Arcade Poker-game that was made by my cousin, Duke Nukem 1 and 2 and some other Apogee/3drealms games etc. etc... plus learned to program with QBASIC. After I saw a SNES and Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior and Super Castlevania IV at my neighbors house (the same that owns the video-store), I went absolutely bonkers. Week later after being good at school and at home my dad bought the SNES and SF2, Super Mario World and Kart for me and my older sister and that was finally when I REALLY became a GAMER :) And my favorite franchises would forever remain Street Fighter and Castlevania, and as favorite genres, fighting games, beat'em'ups/brawlers and platformers :)

Cripes, how many "Nintendo is doomed" threads are we going to have? They'll be fine, it's a small misfire.

nintendoboy16
Yeah, exactly... PSP Go anyone? Last I heard Sony's gaming division was still doing fine :P

PCGAMER gave Dragon Age 2 a 94% not too long ago. take it with a grain of salt.

Jankarcop
Yeah, but this is Computer And Video Games, NOT PC Gamer...
