Hmm... just (finally) got to play Limbo (mainly because I do not have a 360 at the moment and bought it on PSN an hour or two ago).... WOW. So atmospheric and deep in a minimalistic way. And it has that early black and white -cinema kind of feel to it, like when you boot it up or go to the pause menu.

I just thought about this subject the other day.... hmmm... must... think... Street Fighter? With the storyline/plot done the same way the UDON comics do it. A little bit realistic and not just fighting. F.E.A.R? With longer focus on the FEAR-team (unlike the games in which the FEAR-unit isn't even in the sequels)... maybe start from earlier, have them do missions, and the whole Paxton Fettel-storyline coming in maybe in other Seasons etc... Duke Nukem? A satire of 90's action hero, killing aliens/robots/different threats in a comical way in every episode, and always having a cuban cigar in his mouth. General: "Duke, what are you doing?!!", Duke (smoking a cuban): "Taking care of business!", then he shoots an RPG on a building full of aliens/robots etc... and it should take some of the story from the first two Duke-games (Duke Nukum 1 & 2 for PC DOS)...

The only real answer here is Deus Ex! It LITERALLY rewards you for stealthy play (a high-pitched sound effect and a little window popping out saying "you got awarded with bonus experience points") and thinking outside the box. Still, it doesn't force you to go all Sam Fisher-like. It's stealth gameplay is very much like Metal Gear Solid, so much so that I once actually paused the game, went to Google and found out the creators took huge inspiration from the original Metal Gear Solid-game for PS1. The only thing that's missing is the huge "!" appearing on top of a guy that sees you, everything else is almost exactly the same as MGS, except in first person.

You can choose to upgrade your character to be more and more efficient at sneaking; like silenced footsteps, having temporary invisibility (either for humans, or machines - not both at the same time so that the game stays balanced), you can buy tranquilizer darts for different weapons and upgrade their strenght too (so that it takes less time for the darts to have an effect and make someone fall asleep, for example). And/or you can choose to be better at hacking and security so you can disable cameras, turrets, hack computers to disable all security measures etc. easily...

Or make you a violent madman with effiency using shotguns, pistols and explosives etc... and just blow everything up.

All this even changes the story/plot, like thanks to your actions some side-characters may live or die, and you can learn whole new things about the story just because your character is different and you chose different actions. If you're a violent guy many people will dislike you, but if you're a nonlethal guy you may have new friends but some gun crazy people will think you're a sissy or something etc...

EDIT: AND OH YEAH, there's the High Resolution Texture mod for the game too, to make it slightly more pretty. And other graphical upgrade mods too. PLUS, I think some fans are currently re-making the game with CryEngine or Unreal Engine 3 if I remember correctly, so it will be reaaal purdy.

[QUOTE="sethman410"]why are some ppl saying that mgs isn't heavily focused stealth game? i played mgs2 and mgs4 and they both seem like it to me.Mawy_Golomb

While I think that the previous MGS games were pretty stealth-driven, Rising looks like way more action-oriented, with little-to-no stealth present at all. What's this "Lightning Bolt Action?" How dare you replace "Stealth Action" with this! Kojima Productions has finally managed to ruin an awesome stealth game franchise.

Metal Gear Rising is a spin-off by different people and made for Xbox 360 and PC too, Hideo Kojima isn't even involved! Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker is the real sequel (according to Kojima-san himself). It's already been on PSP, and it's now coming to PS3 this year as an improved, non-handheld HD-version. It's basically the real MGS 5 and it happens between MGS 3 and MGS 1. It plays just like the previous few games - nobody's abandoned or ruined that franchise.

[QUOTE="Mawy_Golomb"][QUOTE="tume-x"]Say what you want guys, but Manhunt 1 and 2 are one of the best stealth-games ever made, in my opinion of course. If you're a stealth-fan and haven't tried either of these, you're SO missing out. Unless the gore troubles you... and, you're a sissy. Are you a sissy? :P The 2nd game came out about a year ago on PC, as an uncut version... Or more like "added-grotesqueness" version - it's sick LOL. So much blood and it stays on your clothes and face, plus you need to move your mouse the same way the character uses his weapon for added shock value x( But it's oh, SO fun, thanks to the great stealth mechanics and a story that reminds you of grindhouse/exploitation horror/splatter -movies from the 70's - AND on purpose! It even has film grain in it like you're watching an older flick. That's what annoyed me about the negative things said about this game and it's violence by the media and some gamers. It's a homage to a long-gone movie genre. The first Manhunt is probably the only game which has made me feel as intense, stressed out yet unbelieveably excited at the same time. Hiding in the shadows or under a truck, your (and the character's) heart pounding while you listen to the crazies and gangmembers yelling at you (sometimes they're even afraid of you yet act all cool, it's funny in a dark way... basic Rockstar-stuff), watching where they go, then pick up a plastic bag, or shard of glass, and going for the gruesome kill. Sometimes - very rarely - it switches to action momentarily, where you shoot enemies from cover, it feels so badass, yet you're so vurnerable you'll die instantly if someone shoots you in the head or two big guys start beating you up. They're so well done, gritty and gruesome. Me want Manhunt 3 :(

Oh, that's right. I remember playing through some of the first Manhunt. It was pretty fun, though I heard that the later sections of the game are more action-oriented. Other than that, I liked the fact that it was not just another game where you play as an agent.

DerekLoffin, The only hope that I see for the stealth genre is probably having more indie game developers make games in this genre and experiment a lot more with it, while not making it too action-oriented. Maybe even some lesser known PC game developers, like the ones behind the Death to Spies games can come up with a pretty solid, very well balanced, stealth-driven game.

Actually, no, it doesn't get more action-like, it's just a misconception... not true at all. There's only like one or two scripted action-moments (that last a maximum of 60 seconds!) in this maybe two levels, which are both very long! Like in one part you're being wanted by these bad/crooked cops, and you have to get through a certain part by engaging in a shoot-out - but you HAVE to stay behind a wall, or you'll die instantly, no renegerating health; get headshotted and you're dead. Other than that, it's stealth ALL the way to the very last boss-fight (which is scary as hell, because the boss can also smell you, so you can't just hide a few feet away in a dark corner, it's hilariously distrubing and I had a blast laughing with my friends while playing it). And yeah, to be more on-topic: Yes, stealth is almost dead nowadays. Everything is getting streamlined/simplified/dumbed-down - it happens everywhere, not just to PC games like some people like to think. Splinter Cell: Conviction was a "kill everyone" type of game: pop out from cover, press Y and Sam Fisher auto-kills 2-3 people - "DERP! I are teh good gamerz, I canz shoot every1 with one buttonz!", sigh! -_- Almost every commercial game that advertises it's stealth today, is more like an action game with slow-action and maybe sneaking behind someone every 4 hours (providing the game even lasts that long, lol... Conviction). What happened to stealth-only games. Arkham Asylum, Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell etc. - they're all action games with what I like to call "cinematic stealth", shallow and only there for you to feel awesome for a moment. Even though they make the enemies so stupid even a kid could take them down. "Durr, I'll just walk near where you are hiding and turn my back on you for 30 seconds! Oh wait, you got me noooo!"

[QUOTE="dzimm"]

[QUOTE="rasengan2552"]

you mean like Batman and Assassins Creed ?

those two together will see millions so theoretically stealth is fine.

donalbane

I came here to mention Batman: Arkham Asylum (and the upcoming Arkham City).

Arkham Asylum is one of the few games where stealth doesn't feel like a liability because it's not game over the instant you're spotted.

It bothers me a little when people call Batman a stealth oriented game... being able to hide atop fixed gargoyles is like stealth with training wheels. It's just too limited and asks to little of the player to qualify, imo.

Well, the gargoyles are not necessarily "insta-hide". The baddies can spot you from there if you move like a doofus and climb there right in front of them. And in a couple of parts in the game, the gargoyles are rigged with explosives.. and in one scene The Joker yells "He's on the gargoyles, look up, you idiots!!" if you stay up there for too long :P I think a good stealth game needs to give you the impression that getting caught is not "Game Over" instantly, but more like *close* to it, because you get shot or beaten to a pulp unless you quickly hide again. Having it just go "You looose!" when someone sees you feels unrealistic and cheap... well, not necessarily in the earlier Splinter Cell -games because that's what really would happen if you're actually trespassing on a top secret russian military base looking for nukes, as an american.

Nintendo is the best developer in the world. Why would anyone want them out of business????

That's just silly.

nitekids2004
I think, it's just the people who never got the chance to experience the NES, SNES and Gameboy etc. in person, and feels that Nintendo's unique approach to gaming is threatening to "kiddie-fy" their ego, or their omgawesomesauce-COD's and Haloez. Never understood the "kiddie"-thing either, I was with my 40-year old big bro getting the Wii for him on launch-day (or should I say early morning lol) and we smiled when we noticed 80% of the people in line were at minimum 30-year old well-dressed adult men xD It was so great, and we had a great discussion of the console's launch titles and upcoming titles. My brother said it was the first console in ages (maybe even decades!) which made him feel that "special feel" - you know, the warm fuzzy feeling, getting a new console, everyone having fun and marveling at the games and the experience. Wii Sports ROCKED! ;) Red Steel, not so much -_- Though it had nice "dust physics", when a grenade went off it looked ace... Whoops, went off topic, that's how awesome Nintendo is. Kings of making you feel happy while enjoying their products. The feeling I get from my PS3 (and PS1 and PS2) is and has always been scfi-ish, "sterile" and cold, not necessarily in a bad way - but definately not "happy", unless a separate game comes in and does that. With Nintendo it's the plain console that already gives you that magical feel. And NO, it's not nostalgia.

The only thing even slightly negative thing about Nintendo (or maybe rather Shigeru Miyamoto?) is that there hasn't been a new IP (aka a new character or a franchise) worth noting for ages, literally. I *love* Nintendo (though my last Nintendo -console purchase was the Super NES; I play the newer ones at family and friends' houses mostly, I feel there's only a handful of exclusive titles that interest me right now and I'm pretty poor so I have to carefully consider my gaming purchases every time), and will probably buy 3DS or DS soon, plus WiiU. BUT, it would be SO AWESOME if Shigeru & co. announced a new franchise! I think every news outlet would be reporting about it like crazy, even non-gaming ones - "Legendary Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Super Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong and Kirby(I think?) announcing a completely new series!". I mean, how cool would that be?! I'm *not* one of those guys who say Nintendo "rehashes" (which they don't, they're geniuses at making use of their characters and franchises), I just mean it would be awesome to experience the "Shigeru Magic" - which I like to call it - one more time, before he resigns and/or dies :)
