That's not necessarily true. It depends on how you connect your equipment. HDMI carries both audio & video digitally. DVI just carries digital video. If you then connect your sound via the old red & white analog connections, you do indeed have worse sound. If you use an optical connection, you have equal (or possibly better - HDMI can use 2.1 as opposed to 5.1 surround) sound quality. But you will have more wires.

My PC's TFT screen handles resolutions up to 1280x1024 and has a DVI connection. Can i use this with a PS3 to get a HD image, and what HD standard will i be looking at (720, 1080p etc)?

Actually, to view 16:9 content, you'd run it in 720p and have black bars at the top & bottom.
