Yea, it's just funny because the Episodes really should have been Half Life 3: Episode 1. Kinda makes it seem weird and confusing.

Make sure you're video card drivers and DirectX are up to date.

Also, especially if you downloaded the game through Steam, but even if you just installed it from CD's, check the game files for their integrity. To do this, open Steam, go to My Games, right click on Half Life 2, and click Properties. Go to the Local Files tab, click "Verify Integrity of game cache", and it will take a while scanning your game files.

If neither of these work, nor do Citan76's ideas, I think we'd need some more info to fix it. Or you could try http://www.steampowered.com.

Deus Ex 2

Don't get me wrong, I know Deus Ex is a much better game, and I've played it only umpteen times. But I still like Deus Ex 2 and I've played through it at least 4 times; it doesn't get enough love I think.

I would say start him off using a mouse; you really can't be playing games these days on the PC without one. Try getting him to play Half-Life 1 or 2 or Halo: Combat Evolved. Pretty basic games in their gameplay, but still really fun.

Steam let's you play games when not connected to the internet, however when it was first released it didn't. It was added later on. And I only buy games online with Steam (unless I order on Amazon).

The X360 upcoming library made me buy one. Halo 3, Mass Effect, GTA IV, SW: Force Unleashed, etc. Plus there are already quite a few good games out on the X360. And this is the first console I've ever owned (ZOMG!!!one).

You raid 5 hours a night for 2 months to get the best gear in the game... to have new gear released in the next patch only to do it all over again.

But but... I raid for the experience, not the gear!RandomNoob33

Sure you do. That's why everyone still raids DM, UBRS and MC. Get over yourself. MMO's all inherently blow.
