Are you sure? I think Nintendo might. Additionally, the only indicator I gave that I'm attempting to extend my personal opinions on the whole market is in the title of the thread.
Beyond that, I've got a fairly good testimony that rings true generally. There is simply nothing on the DS and the Wii that interest me...certainly a reasonable thought process. I said I considered both the DS and the Wii in the first place. Why would I be a fanboy if I'm considering both of them, and bought one instead? In fact, I've walked into Gamestop numerous times to ask "do you have any Wiis or DS Lites?" only to walk out disappointed...it is only coincidence that I'm not regretting that now. I camped out for several hours outside an EB games for a Wii. So, yeah, of course I'm a fanboy. Whatever, man. I just want to play God of War for PSP and Metal Gear. That has nothing to do with being a fanboy.
The online gaming on Wii is nonexistent, the graphics on either platform cannot compare, some truly amazing PS2 games are making appearances on both platforms, and they are both fully equipped as media tools. Those are some pretty good pluses.
Yet the Wii and the DS continue to dominate the market -- and not just by a little bit. Look at the sales numbers of those two consoles compared to all the other consoles. You'll see that the sales of those two consoles is more than all the other competing consoles combined. So your individual opinion is definitely in the minority and does not reflect the general opinion of most of the market.
PS3 does not have an internal scaler. But this doesn't really mean much with 480i resolutions anyways as both consoles look pretty much the same at the downgraded resolution. It's for 1080i on some TV's that this becomes a problem. The PS3 can't render a 1080i image. Only 480p, 720p, or 1080p. If a TV ACCEPTS ONLY a 1080i image for Hi-def, then the PS3 will downgrade it to 480p. It can't scale to 1080i internally.
Some people will say -- "wait, my TV can do 1080i and the PS3 works fine". But that's only if your TV also accepts 720p signals thus allowing it to convert the image to either 1080i or retaining a 720p image.
Anyhow, anyone who tells you HD doesn't make much difference has not spent much time looking at any HDTV above 20" in size. Even at that size, it's still noticeable. Think about it. Set your computer monitor to 640 X 480. That's about the same as 480p (which is still better than 480i). Then change the resolution to 1280 X 720. That's about the same as 720p. Notice a sharper image? That's about the difference in sharpness and detail. It's pretty significant.
The 360 has a great game line-up and a large library of games already in place. Its technological capabilities are at least equivalent to the PS3 as of now (maybe not in 2 or 3 years). I've never played so many fun games as I have on my 360, especially online with friends with the excellent Live service (totally worth paying a few bucks a month). I play almost exclusively online and grow bored of single - player games very quickly -- so the online is very important to me.
PS3 has maybe 2 games that interest me that aren't on the 360 and its internet service completely pales in comparison. I would consider buying a PS3 when it drops enough in price to make it a good cheap Blu-ray player with a couple of games that I feel I just have to have. That won't happen for a good couple years yet. There's just not enough reason to own both consoles and I already have the 360.
The Wii -- well maybe for the kids. But again there are only 2 or 3 games that are any good on it. How long would those games last me? A couple weeks maybe?
PS3 because it supports 1080p.
When it supports 1080p mean It is stronger than 360 GPU.
25-Automatic
Wow this guy does NOT know what he's talking about. The 360 has a built-in scaler chip for all the necessary resolutions inculding 1080p. In fact, in the future, it could theoretically scale up to even higher resolutions.
On a standard def TV, both consoles are going to look very similar. It would HIGHLY depend on the game, not so much the console. Just go with the console that has the games you prefer and you'll be fine. Use a component cable (red, green, and blue cords) for the best quality picture. If you don't have component inputs, use S-Video -- it's still much better than the regular composite cables.
The main problem with using standard def TV's is that details such as text (which is often very important in a game) are quite a bit smaller and there's no font adjustment so you're stuck squinting at tiny letters on the screen. Developers should really think about including a standard def font option where the letters and the interface are enlarged. I have a 42" HDTV and I still find some text to be a little small even in hi-def. That new Xbox Live Arcade "Catan" demo has text that must be impossible to read in standard def.
