Halo 2 Vista delayed again

[UPDATE] Bungie PC shooter release date pushed back to May 31; copies hit store shelves regardless.

While diehard Halo fans are likely neck-deep in the Xbox 360 Halo 3 beta, some of them might have emerged from their man-cannon-grav-lift-and-bubble-shield-induced stupor long enough to notice that the Windows Vista edition of Halo 2 has yet to show up in stores.

Halo 2 was originally set for release on the PC May 8, but Microsoft pushed it back a couple of weeks "to make some improvements to the install experience and address other technical issues." It had been expected to ship to stores Tuesday, but when it didn't show, Microsoft came out with news of another delay, but with no explanation for it.

"Halo 2 for Windows Vista did not release to retailers on May 22, as previously announced, and will now ship from manufacturers on May 31," a Microsoft representative said. "Shadowrun will be the first game to debut the highly anticipated Games for Windows Live system on May 29. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers."

[UPDATE] While Halo 2 Vista was officially delayed, that hasn't stopped some stores from selling it. GameSpot has purchased a copy from a Circuit City location, and the retail chain's Web site lists it as currently shipping and available for in-store pickup. As of press time, Microsoft representatives had not returned a request for comment.

Now that we're getting Live for free by playing against PC users but not 360 users it's all a big loss to M$. I don't even wanna pay a single cen tfor cross-platform play and not evry game's gonna support Live you know.

Games For Windows Live... highly anticipated? Right. Just another example of M$ trying to control every little aspect of PC use... and of course squeeze out every bit of cash they can. And I don't think anyone's that bothered about Halo 2 on the PC. I mean, it's a shaky port, it was totally unnecessary to make it Vista only since there's nothing in there to warrant a whole new OS, it's not even that good a game to begin with, and most people who are *that* interested have already played it on the XBox. It's obvious: no one is bothered about Vista, no one is buying it other than pre-installed on new PCs, so by making a popular game Vista exclusive they're hoping to hype up the OS. Shame they 100% fumbled the ball. I used to respect Microsoft. I've used their operating systems since DOS 6, I love playing my friend's XBox, and they've even popped out a fair game from time to time. But they do seem to be making more and more dodgy decisions. Mysterious 'delays' are the least of it. Why not start by fixing Vista? My, that was a bit of a rant, wasn't it? Sorry :-)

Alarsis83 - gotta love how you keep changing "your point". It's been, what three different things now? I still find it odd that you can't see a reason for people to play Halo 2 and gain achievements when they've already played it, if they are going to upgrade their systems soon anyhow. Odd indeed... The ability to gain achievement points via Windows gaming just might be the incentive some are waiting for to upgrade to Vista. For others it's going to be something like Crysis.

I have to say, I'm not surprised its pushed back. I know they are having problems getting it to run smoothly on Vista. Every game that has come out, or is coming out (for the latest, please see the Lost Planet Direct X 9 to Direct X 10 comparison) has suffered on Vista. Making a game Vista-only is plain stupid. What ever monkey decided on that should be fired.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is 100% not the game that will motivate me to upgrade to Vista. Let me see, upgrade to Vista to play a 3 1/2 year old DX9 console port that I already beat on its original platform...Come on MS, I ain't that stupid. Give me a good reason to upgrade and I will. Maybe if it were DX10, but I've already seen what DX10 did for Lost Planet...not much. And achievement points aren't it either. Unless I get something more than a number on the screen, it's a total no sell. Mouse and keyboard would be nice, but again not enough to get me to buy a game I already own and beat.

It's an absolute disgrace that MS is charging full price for a 3 year old console FPS on the PC. What a slap in the face. Not only that, but it requires Vista, which is a double shot to the kidneys. And, to top it all off because we're not done yet! , MS is trying to charge PC Gamers for Live Gold, and if you decide to stick with the free silver account, you won't have VOIP, LAN support, or be able to host your own non-dedicated servers. MS can go to hell for all I care, what a disgrace.

Don't sweat it MS, you can delay Halo 2 for another 15-20 years for all i care. I mean really whos gonna play Halo 2 on their pc? Its played on consoles cause theres nothing better, but whos gonna pick Halo 2 before Crysis? or QW? or Battlefield? or even sub par 1st shooters you can find in discount bins at gamestop?

hoverboy: You can repeat your upgrade rationalization ad nauseum, it's not going to change the fact that you can find a cheaper and nearly identical alternative in the original version of the game. For now, all that's really left to be said is that we are just going to be in disagreement. You may be able to justify the additional cost of purchasing 2 year old port to PC, but I just can't do it. And yes, the inclusion of my gamertag on my profile page is really a way for me to cope with repressed childhood memories. Now that I have confronted them I can get on with my life. I'm glad to see the art of hyberbole isn't lost on some people.

Yikes.....there are FAR better games to be upgrading for....Crysis anyone? Leave Halo for the console kiddies...

Alaris83 - One more time: Since the dawn of PC gaming, gamers have been known to pay hundreds of dollars to upgrade their systems to play one game. These are called "upgrade cycles". If Achievements via Windows games (in this case Halo 2) is that driving force for someone to enter this upgrade cycle, how is that *any* different from the people who dumped hundreds of dollars into their PC's to play Oblivion? It's not. You've somehow made this giant leap of reasoning that by me saying that I'm anticipating getting Achievements via Windows games that people who like to get Achievement's in games have all kinds of personal issues, when in fact, all we're doing is playing games, just like you. You asked who would be anticipating this game, I said, "Achievements via Windows games, sign me up!", and somehow to you that means that I'm going to be "...making all these expenditures for the sole purpose of gaining achievements..."? Assume much? And I also love how you assume that Achievement hunters would simply pay cash directly for achievements without actually playing the game to earn them. By that statement alone it is completely clear that you're missing the entire point of Achievements = fun. You're clumsily trying to tie it back into your "paying to upgrade your PC = paying for Achievements", LOL, like I'm not going to get *any* other benefits from the upgrade. And yes, Gamertags do aid in communication, but why are *you* displaying your full Gamertag on your profile here instead of simply your Gamer name? By your own omissions are they not a sign of some giant personal flaw, as you have accused the rest of us over and over?

I just picked up a copy at Circuit City earlier today and I wanted to post with some comments that might clear up some of the confusion. The install was a bit strange due to the fact that you can start playing while the install is occuring in the background. The game seemed to run very sluggish during the initial file transfer. I also encountered several graphics card issues and wierd texture mapping during the install, so I reinstalled the latest drivers for my 8800 GTX and that seemed to correct the issue. Still the graphics are still pretty sloppy for a DX9 game, but it does look marginally better than Halo 2 upconverted to 720p on the 360. I'm running at 1680 x 1050 at the highest settings on both quality and AA. The cutscenes look like crap but the graphics during gameplay are good - just don't expect the game to look like HL2 :). The game is definately available at all of the Circuit City stores in the DC Metro area and seems to be running as expected post installation. I'm not sure why MS is dragging its feet on this one.

I don't have a problem with people upgrading their PC to play games, to say so would make me hypocritical. I've done it myself. However, making all these expenditures for the sole purpose of gaining achievements, which is what you implied when I asked, "Who is really anticipating Halo 2 for PC?" is foolish. Like I said previously, I have no problem with Achievements and will admit they help to extend the life of a game. However, if you're so wrapped up in them that you're willing to drop some serious cash for upgrades just to unlock some more points, I think you're trying to compensate for something. So now I have to ask, when does Microsoft skip the middle man and just add a "Paid $$$ extra" achievement for those Achievement hungry enthusiasts? Also, last time I checked, Gamertags aided in communication between players.

Alaris83, as simple as you try and break that down, you still cross over several points other than the money thing. I know plenty of people who have spent hundreds of dollars over the years to upgrade their PC's just to play one game (Ultima VII / Quake / Oblivion / Etc.). So is it an "issue" that they dumped hundreds of dollas into their gaming habit for one game? This has been going on for years. It's nothing new. How is this an "issue"? Upgrading your system to play one game driven by the fact that it has a feature that many people happen to love (Achievements) is no different then upgrading your system to play one cool new game like Crysis if thats what you have fun doing. You make the demeaning assumption that people who dig achievements somehow need positive reinforcement, when all we're doing is playing a game to hit a pre-defined goal and having fun in the process. Again, how is that *any* different that completing some random quest in-game? If they get you to play more of a game, thus getting more for your $50, how is that bad? Prior to the achievement system, I'd finish a game and pretty much call it a done deal. Now I hunt for the online achievements, try in different modes, etc. Why do you display your whole Gamertag in your profile instead of just your name if you think that its just an "arbitrary point system"?

The achievements use the part of the brain that hasn't evolved since we were collecting seeds for our mouse family, but they are addictive to get. Getting every pokemon wasn't fun either, but back in the day i did it They are dumb, but they give status to people who are willing to play the game for more than just entertainment Don't bash people for being human; plus, it gives you a fancy number next to your ID name! great marketing tool, great low-cost addition to games.
