Halo 2 Vista delayed again

[UPDATE] Bungie PC shooter release date pushed back to May 31; copies hit store shelves regardless.

While diehard Halo fans are likely neck-deep in the Xbox 360 Halo 3 beta, some of them might have emerged from their man-cannon-grav-lift-and-bubble-shield-induced stupor long enough to notice that the Windows Vista edition of Halo 2 has yet to show up in stores.

Halo 2 was originally set for release on the PC May 8, but Microsoft pushed it back a couple of weeks "to make some improvements to the install experience and address other technical issues." It had been expected to ship to stores Tuesday, but when it didn't show, Microsoft came out with news of another delay, but with no explanation for it.

"Halo 2 for Windows Vista did not release to retailers on May 22, as previously announced, and will now ship from manufacturers on May 31," a Microsoft representative said. "Shadowrun will be the first game to debut the highly anticipated Games for Windows Live system on May 29. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers."

[UPDATE] While Halo 2 Vista was officially delayed, that hasn't stopped some stores from selling it. GameSpot has purchased a copy from a Circuit City location, and the retail chain's Web site lists it as currently shipping and available for in-store pickup. As of press time, Microsoft representatives had not returned a request for comment.

LOL at the brain trust who referred to Halo 2 as a "mediocre shooter". Good luck selling that opinion.

If I had Vista, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. And if I had a better rig, I'd buy Vista in a heartbeat. But, alas, neither are the case. SF

Pushed back? Bah, it's already out here in Australia through EB Games... and being from a small part of australia, i'm sure at the much larger stores, there would have been alot of copies sold.

This release was totally wrong, Bungie found out it wasn't ready and stores sold an unfinished copy anyways. MS made a big mistake this time.

Fallen - To be honest, you couldnt be more off base. Logic says, if Microsoft delayed Vista so much, that means nVidia had even longer to dev. the drivers to run on it. So why exactly would that make it harder for nVidia? It wouldnt... Its simply their way of doing the "Sony Spin" on the bad bad PR they are getting from this. Also, Yes, Microsoft has their OWN drivers, and there have been a few versions released from them for nVidia cards (including the ones that shipped with the OS), with varying levels of compat. and speed. We arent using MS drivers though, we are using the publicly available (And leaked lol) drivers from nVidia. Further, Microsoft isnt testing things for how well nVidia things run, they were testing their OS, how IT runs, how IT performs. And IT is just fine, its the drivers that are the issue like I have said. And btw, could the reason Ubuntu runs faster than XP, be the same reason DOS runs faster? Or how about any other device or OS that does very little? Not to mention, the lack of support, ease of use, visual elements, games, 3d acceleration, apis, applications, recompiling for whatever kernel you use, etc. etc. etc. ? lmao... Lets not go there :) (And it should be noted, I have a copy of all the major distros, so no I am not speaking from mine arse ;p )

paradyme777, most people/press have had it for over a month, it was supposed to be review code, but it makes you wonder that : 1. review code usually means gold, so why has it been delayed twice since 2. if its been delayed, how come stores had it and been selling it. Just like Vista itself, Halo 2 Vista is a joke.

You guys are right, MS isn't stupid. They know that most of you will buy any new OS they put out, as long as they say it's x times better/faster/more secure than their last OS. Yeah, graphics card companies need to get on the ball with their drivers, but in the same breath ask yourself what cards MS was using to test Vista. I know that it's impossible for them to check every single card on the market, but with all of the delays of Vista itself, you can't put all of this on nVidia. On a side note, I can't really compare Vista performance to XP, I haven't taken the plunge. But I do know that Ubuntu on a PII desktop runs faster than XP on my P3 laptop. Just a thought.

luis7989_7: "The PC as a gaming platform is pure crap" Should be changed to WAS... Things are changing, and thats one of Vistas strengths... Gaming will improve on PC quickly, for many reasons. One of which is VERY important... PC games (Not FPSes mind you) have never really had a default control method. Its always different, has compat problems, etc. etc. This has changed, with the introduction of the XBOX 360 and its accessories, as now you can plug in your wired, or wireless 360 controllers and accessories and use them on your PC, opening the doors to simplified PC gaming, for casual and hardcore gamers alike. Tray and Play is another example, being able to simply stick a disc in and play while installing in the background, etc. Phone, so Ill shuddup lol

Who cares? Everyone has already beaten the game to death on the XBox. Most Halo fans are playing the Halo 3 demo now and could give a rat's #$% about Halo 2 at the moment. Where's UT07? I could see people getting excited for that game on the PC.

"ghsacidman..." Remember that most of the things you are saying are your opinion, and completely based off of opinion. There have been many good shooters that have recently come out for pc... Like S.T.A.L.K.E.R for instance. It may not be multiplayer, but that was not what you asked. Halo 2 is a good game, but it is not flawless (not game is)... But it's filled with bugs, glitches, and a lot of unbalance in the maps. Now, obviously, most games have some bugs, or glitches, or anything else... But saying that the pc has had barely any NEWWW good multiplayer shooters is kind of ignorant... Due to the fact that technically, Halo 2 isn't new either. It's been out for almost 3 years now, and is just now showing up with PC with a few achievements, a few extra's, and slightly better graphics. Within that span time, Half-Life 2, Counterstrike Source, Quake 4, and many other games have come out. I do agree with you though, that it is a good game... I just honestly don't think it's that anticipated, or is going to sell that well. Most people who care about Halo 2, already have it... And most people who already have it, aren't going to buy it again. It's just the way people are. I am a PC gamer and a console gamer, but I'm not going to buy Halo 2 again just because of a few quirks.

adolfogomez: "no drivers for My NVTV card... " As I said, thats nVidia with Vista atm. Same with Creative Labs. Yell at them about it, (And dont believe the junk they toss out about Vista being at fault, remember, its pass the buck time, as they screwed up). adolfogomez: "no drivers for my remote... " Sorry, my Microsoft Media Center remote works flawlessly, with no driver updates or anything. I would suggest moving away from nVidia if you want good software support atm. Maybe in a month or two it will improve, but most of the nVidia community has been waiting triple that for good drivers for their video cards (Which imho, is a bit more important than TV card or remote drivers, considering it wont matter if you cant see anything). adolfogomez: "Video caption from X1900XT vivo wont work (thats how I play PS2 on my monitor)..." You mean video capture? I am sure they will have it working (Not as familiar with ATI right now, so I cant really say much about that). However, again, I would suggest using an external solution anyways... They are cheap and easy to find, and allow you to hook your PS2/XBOX/Gamecube/etc directly to the monitor, and even have it picture-in-picture on the monitor while you use Windows, etc. Plus, you can get nicer ones that will allow the XBOX/PS2/Gamecube (With component cables of course) to output HD or 480p onto your monitor, something you cant do with VIVO or other vid capture techniques right now (Unless you want to spend a CRAPLOAD (lol) of money on a component video capture card, something I wouldnt suggest anyways). Just head to Frys (or any other Gaming/electronics store) and tell them you need a VGA box (A box that converts component or composite video signals to VGA signals for use with a computer monitor). adolfogomez: "Lineage 2, SilverFall and Photosop CS2 benchmark only came back to par after another gig of ram (2gig AData DDR2 800)" As I said, higher entrance footprint to accomodate Vista, however, performance comes back in line once you drop in a bit more memory or a bit faster CPU. Which, considering Vista uses alot more resources, that shouldnt surprise anyone. I just cant think of any other way to put it right now :\ But the point is, for old to run the same or better on a system that uses more memory and cpu resources, means the computer is running more efficiently than before, just with a higher footprint. Further, future software written directly for Vista and DX10 have much more headroom for growth in performance, details, etc. due to the way the system works (Which is why it requires a bit more resources)... adolfogomez: "I use my PC for games, and Media Center... right now I cant use my caption card, my ATi AIW, my remote, and the game I play the most runs slower or on par (after another gig of ram)...." Honestly, that is why I am so picky about the hardware I buy. Considering the hardware in my machine is what, at least 2 years old and EVERY device has working drivers... Its really just a matter of tough luck in getting devices that arent being supported properly. (Again, I do TV recording/viewing/streaming to 360s/etc, gaming, and such all on my Vista PC as well). adolfogomez: "why would I upgrade my PC to get back to where I used to be in XP? so I can play DX10 games that are not for sale and Halo2? not saying vista isnt the future but it isnt right for me today." To open up the door for better, tomorrow. It may sound silly, but game devs cant release games they cant make money on, as such, games for Vista and DX10 are of course only starting to appear, since Vista just came out a few months ago. But if you come back in about a year from now, Most games will be boxed with the "Games for Windows Live" logo, and will be Vista only or enhanced. Thats just the way it is, and just the way it always has been and will be. Evolution occurs in everything, like it or not.

I don't think many PC gamers care all that much, we already have far superior shooters and have more coming soon. This will sell even more poorly than the first one did on PC.

Vista is fast as hell but you probably wouldn't see it with 512MB of ram. i always had 2 gigs since i had Xp and Vista is a lot faster. I also have halo 2 and the game is good times. The most fun i had next to battlefied games. Live is exactly what PC games need. bring on more please!!!

Wow can't imagine how great the graphics will be what with the requirement of DX9 on Vista. Apparently MS just couldn't figure out how to get around a single line of buggy code, reproduced for your edification: if checkOS is not "VISTA" then stop If only there was a solution. I'm sure it will be a great bargain bin game a few years from now when it's $3. Till then, sorry MS, not that dumb.

peacebringer... - Do you understand the difference between the two OSs you are talking about? Do you understand that DX has been redone, most of the ways it draws to the screen, sends sound to the sound card, etc. etc. All has changed. So do you also not realize that one of the reasons Vista has "legacy" ((ie old crap)) problems, is because most of the old junk code that did nothing but support as said, old junk, and slowed the OS, caused problems, etc. they took out. That is why, once drivers improve and things stabilize, you will see games on Vista perform better than they would on the same system. Again, this has a threshold, considering computers that use rocks to depict a calculator likely wont have enough horsepower to run it, not to mention games with it. But.... hmm... Let me simplify this. XP = Slower OS, includes robust support for legacy devices, however, all that support for ((old junk)) introduces problems and slows the overall speed. However, the OS itself has a smaller memory footprint than the new Vista (With all the new features, visual elements, etc). Vista = Faster OS, removed most legacy support, redid most of the way it functions, pretty impressive backwards compat. with previous Windows/DOS programs. However, the OS itself is a bit larger and has many more visual features, and poor drivers (From some companies). As such, you see slower performance, when in fact, it is running the game similar to how it did on XP, but with a new OS, new buggy drivers, and requiring more CPU and Memory to just run. The point is, Vista does a great job considering it is a new way of doing it all, and, it takes alot more of the computers power to run, so being able to run games the same as before, means the computer is actually more efficient than it was previously, even if XP posts slightly better frame rates, etc. Because you cant just think of the game, you have to think of the entire system. So yes, while the entrance may be a bit higher (All I did was drop in another gig of RAM, and presto, XP like performance. I have 2gb now, but, when comparing speeds, XP and Vista run very similar. So, while Vista seemed a bit slower than XP with 1gb ram, 2gb ram provides me with a very close performance comparisson between XP and Vista, which means, Vista CAN outperform XP, with the right hardware, memory, drivers and software. Hope that makes sense lol, had a REALLY rough day, my mind is fizzled ;p

@The1stFishBone "halo 2 is not that great. It seems great to console players. but for hardcore pc games who have a lot more multiplayer games to play. Its nothing special." That much is true. But it is special in some sense cause that's the only game they had for a while, and they marketed it well. So wether you liked it or not, if you had an xbox, you didn't have much of a choice. PCs are a different story. Games like that have come and gone without that much fuss.

NikeFreak Vista takes more to run games , look at games that use vista and Xp it saysfor vistas you need more power for your PC cause vista takes up so much of your PC's hardware, so your wrong XP is better for gaming and Vista only makes things worse caue if you have vistas your gonna need more ram to run the game compared to if your setup was on XP, i for one am not upgrading to vistas for another year or more. SC2 is not gonan require Vistas thank god.
