Inafune explains Capcom's Xbox 360 push

Publisher's managing director says controversial support for Microsoft's console was necessary to find success in the West.

The Xbox 360 is consistently outperformed by the Wii and PlayStation 3 in Capcom's native Japan, but its popularity in the West is undeniable. According to managing executive Keiji Inafune, it was this fact that led Capcom to heavily support Microsoft's console with timed exclusives such as Dead Rising and Lost Planet, as well as multiplatform efforts such as Devil May Cry 4.

Keiji Inafune
Keiji Inafune

"I think I can only get away with saying this now, but I really thought that using the Xbox was the only way to break into overseas markets, and I took that hypothesis all the way," said Inafune. "In the end, I am very happy that I did so." Inafune's comments came by way of an internal interview posted today to the publisher's official Web site.

One of the more dramatic controversies of 2007 was Capcom's decision to abandon PlayStation exclusivity for its Devil May Cry franchise. The move inspired many an irate PS3 owner to flood the publisher's official forums with messages decrying the decision, with more than 10,000 gamers signing an online petition pledging to boycott future Capcom games. In the end, however, the strong blowback was for naught, and DMC4 went on to achieve multiplatinum sales shortly after its release. The game was later released for the PC.

Though Capcom initially released both Dead Rising and Lost Planet as console exclusives for the Xbox 360, they have subsequently been ported to other systems. A year on from its initial showing on the Xbox 360 and PC, Lost Planet was ported to the PS3. Two and a half years after its debut on Microsoft's console, the paired-down Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop arrived for the Wii.

Capcom is currently working on both Dead Rising 2 and Lost Planet 2. However, unlike their predecessors, both games have reportedly been slated from the beginning as multiconsole efforts.

Dante's Inferno is not related to any of the Devil May Cry games. It's not even a Capcom game.

@ Arcelonious Both Burnout Paradise and Grand Theft Auto 4 had the PS3 as lead SKU. Explain why each game can fit on a single DVD. The vreal reason why the PS3 has had a slow start was because the hardware cost too damn much. All PS3 Blu-ray Disc based games require a hard drive in a PS3 to play, whereas no 360 game need the hard drive to play (aside from online play). The Blu-ray Disc format isn't really being underused since developers have to load it up with redundant data to take into account the PS3's 2X read time of the Blu-ray Disc (over the 12X read time of the XBOX 360's DVD). Honestly, I'd love to own both a PS3 and 360, but these days owning a PS3 is Not Economically Viable.

@ Kaneada I agree. the PS3 has definitely had an extremely slow start in this current console race. One important reason is that many game developers have yet to utilize the full capacity of the PS3 and it's blu-ray technology. When developers create multiplatform games, they generally have to make them so that they can be played by both systems, which means that the game cannot contain more than what a 360 disc can handle, resulting in much of the PS3 version of the game's blu-ray disc being unused. We haven't seen very many multiplatform games that have been designed initially for the PS3 technology and then brought to the 360, with the exception of Final Fantasy XIII and Tekken 6, both of which have yet to be released. For the PS3 to be more successful, I think there would have to be an increase in the amount of game developers willing to create games solely for blu-ray capacity, which is definitely a risky venture, because they limit their profits by not making the game compatible with the 360. Right now, there have only been a few companies willing to do that, but really, who can blame them, there's much more money in going multiplatform, and these are rough times we are in.

I think with the PS3 starting to go into it's stride we are going to see many more multiplatform releases minus the timed exclusive. It's going to be a race to the finish with the PS3 struggling to bridge gaps in sales. (Am a proud PS3 owner by the way.) This whole situation is very reminiscent of the SNES/Genesis era, where the SNES was doing well, but not near well enough because of the Genesis's massive head start and popularity at the time. (was a huge fan of both systems.) I think though as the system and storage of the PS3 becomes both easier to develop for and necessary we will start seeing more developers turn to the PS3 with the Xbox 360 becoming a less valued asset. Games like MGS 4 and Killzone 2 have proven that the PS3 can be beyond graphically competitive, so the only real issue here is demand for the system which is nearly half that of the Xbox at least partially due to price tag. I think the real deal breaker for MS is going to come next year with the release of FFXIII which based on the Japanese technical specs is going to be a massive game (storage wise.) I think the PS3 will end up edging out 360 on performance and Final Fantasy players will help raise support for Sony a bit.

So in order to push sales in the west, you had to exclude half of your fans in the west? What kind of retarded logic is that?

Of course it's about money. This is a business, people! What did you think it was?! As a PS3 owner, I can't say I'm happy about it, but I also can't blame them one bit. I will say, however, that I don't know what this means moving forward. If systems are going to have about the same hardware (not including the worthless Wii), and have the same games (again, not worthless Wii games like "Jelly Belly Ballistic Beans" and "Smiley World Island Challenge"--btw I'm not making those names up), what's the point of having different systems? They might as well just merge and come out with one system (I don't actually want that to happen I'm just saying).

It never ceases to amuse me to think just how incredibly sad those 10,000 people were that signed the petition to boycott Capcom games because their precious Devil May Cry made it onto another console... as though those few that have Sony blood in their veins truly thought they owned that, or any other game!? I'm smart enough to appreciate all consoles and just find it hilarious any time I read stuff like that.... as annoying as fanboys are, they're also damn funny too :)

Back @ MassacreMonk My beef isn't with your choice in consoles just your seeming fixation on exclusive games somehow being superior to multiplatform games for the simple reason that they are exclusive to a single console. I don't care that you have a PS3, if it was released sooner I'd most likely have one as well. Also, I'm glad you at least look at multiple reviews before bashing a game. I just don't like how you point your finger at a game with a 6.5 as your example of a bad 360 exclusive. That doesn't make the game bad, it's just not great. That's why i don't like the numerical value system in reviews. Any game that doesn't get over an 8 seems to get flamed into oblivion when they are still enjoyable. What you should be pointing at instead of Halo Wars is Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad. With a 2.5 I wouldn't even be able to argue with you about that abortion of a game.

@ninjasRmammals2 I have tons of Multiplat games. I obviously don't own an xbox because frankly I wasn't raised by no fool ;) I'm j/k calm down. My game collection is neither small nor sad. Yes I rely on game reviews why wouldn't you, that's what they are there for. So I can base my own options off that review rather spending my money or even renting it for that fact. I base my views on more then one website, so its set in sold stone. "Yeah this games a piece of feculence. I'm not buying!" Some don't have the time or money to be playing games all the time anymore. So they have to be choosy. Anyways I WILL, enjoy my Resistance and MGS4 with my LittleBigPlanet with a side order of Killzone 2. The after that I'll wait for God of War 3, then the forecast predicts some Heavy Rain. I might be walking into some Uncharted territory here but doesn't inFAMOUS come out this year as well?

Capcom you don't need to explain to fanboys where you are supporting the apposing machine to what the fanboy likes. the xbox has done well in america and in europe where i am so it is obvious a third party like yourslef should want a part of that sucess. fanboys that moaned about devil may cry going to 360 should remember that capcom is a third party and a third party should not side with anyone

vietboi89, I'm not sure if you are responding to my comment or not, but if you are, no where in my comment did I say that developers downgrade a game by going multiplatform. And the reason Gears of War isn't coming out for the PS3 is because it is published by Microsoft Game Studios. And I agree with Henninger. Aside from games that are developed and published by Microsoft or Sony, I think most games should be multiplatform. The only exceptions are games like Metal Gear Solid 4, which can't be easily ported to the 360 due to hardware limitations. And when companies do develop multiplatform games, they should do it in an unbiased manner, such as how Capcom did it with Street Fighter IV. It's a great game, that looks identical on both systems (I have both versions, my little brother plays my 360 version), and has the same downloadable content for each system. That is how multiplatform developing should be done. Bethesda and Rockstar North have lost some of my respect for the way they have recently handled their multiplatform games.

The whole exclusive game thing should only apply 2 the company's team of developers. 4 example, Microsoft owns Rare so Perfect Dark will only come out on a Microsoft console. Sony has its on team that make God of War so therefore God of War will only come out on PS3. These should b the only way games would b exclusive. 4 all of the other 3rd party companies out there it wouldnt make any sense 2 have an exclusive game. The only excuses 4 exclusive games other than wut i said above is that the developers are being paid an absurd amount of money 2 keep it exclusive or the hardware better supports wut the developers want 2 do with the game. Any other reason is just stupid imo. I personally dont agree with GTA 4 exclusive downloadable content because it deprives the PS3 only players from playing another part of the game that came out for more than 1 system. & it forces players that own either the PS3 or 360 2 play it on the 360 just 2 play the game 4 extra content. So with all that being said i say that Capcom is doing the right thing.

this whole console war thing is stupid, its all business in the end, first of all the only reason why i would prevent a game from going multiplatform is if I knew that the ps3 was the only system that can handle like MGS4 and others, I wouldnt want to have to produce a two disked or 4 disked game for the x360 is the ps3 can handle it no problem. i also would not release a game for the ps3 if microsoft was one of the companies that i owe my great success too like gears of war, do u no how this works people? Gears looks like a promising game so microsoft sends them a few checks so they can make sure it get polished to perfection so the x360 has a great quality game same goes for MGS4. without the revenue they get from their respective console partners they would end up releasing a sub par video game, but going multiplatform is also beneficial especially if your console partner is doing such a bad job and u concluded going both ways will get u some extra funds, if u actually think they downgraded a game by going multiplatform then you are too naive to be on the web

If you read Keiji Inafune's complete interview, it's obvious that Tom Magrino, the person who wrote this article, is putting a pro-Microsoft spin, especially with the inclusion of the third paragraph, which details an "account" of something that wasn't even mentioned in the interview. Inafune merely expands on the success of Dead Rising and Lost Planet as helping to bring their "sometimes difficult creator organization together." No where does he mention anything that supports Microsoft over Sony, or vice versa. Even the phrase of Capcom "pushing Xbox 360" is a bit of an exaggeration, since the majority of their current games are multiplatform, including the Dead Rising sequel. In the end, I really don't mind third-party developers making multiplatform games. However, one problem that comes to mind when these developers decide to go multiplatform is that they have to limit what they can do with a game, so that they can ensure that the end product can be used on both systems. Thus, while the game may utilize the full power of the 360, it really isn't harnessing all of what a PS3 could do. I got my 360 first, then my Wii, and finally my PS3 last, and I can honestly say, the few PS3 exclusives that I do own (e.g., Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2) look graphically superior to any multiconsole or 360 exclusive that I own. It almost seems that developers use the 360 model as the basis for development, while using that base to develop it for the PS3 as well. In other words, when a company says they're "simultaneously developing" for both consoles, they're probably just developing the game for one console, and then porting it to the other. One perfect example of this is Fallout 3. It's obvious that the developers spent more time on the 360 version. It looks better, and it even has downloadable content not available for the PS3 version. In any case, this article, like many other Gamespot articles, seems to be made mainly to start some Sony vs. Microsoft fanboy war.

Oh another thing, to everyone saying it's just about getting more money. Yeah, that probably is a reason they go multiplatform and it makes good business sense. However, think about it from another point of view. Let's say you made one terrific game, a game you knew people would love and play for hours a day for years to come. Would you want to release it on a single console severely limiting the number of people who get to enjoy your game or do you release it on as many mediums as possible to spread the fun your game has to offer? Maybe I'm just being idealistic, I don't know, but I'd personally choose the latter option.

Oh so much to reply to... @Chiyo I would seriously prefer that Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft stay separate in their console endeavors. If the three previously mentioned companies got together to crank out one "ultimate" system then prepare to pay the amount on the surely ultimate price-tag. I'm not throwing down a grand for just a console, and I believe most people would agree with me. @Starlighthunter You said something about Capcom being a Sony developer first and you are way off base. People were getting exploded into balls of light by insta-death spikes in Megaman while Sony was busy shoving walkmans down our throats. They started with Nintendo, buddy...at least in consoles... to be fair their first game was an arcade machine. @MassacreMonk I don't even understand your argument. You rely on game reviews to tell you if a game is worth even your attention? You can form no opinion of a game on your own? You must restrict yourself to enjoying a game based on a numerical value set by a person you've probably never met? Then with the rest of your comment I can only assume you own just PS3 exclusives then? No Call of Duty, DMC, any Tom Clancy, Street Figher, Soul Calibur, Bioshock, Dead Space, Madden, NBA, NHL, Fallout, Rock Band, Guitar Hero games? No Resident Evil 5 then I guess, either? You must have a small and sad game collection without multiplats. Enjoy playing Resistance and MGS4 over and over. I'm done for now.

I hope that Dead Rising: Chop till you drop sells over a million copies on the Wii and shows Capcom that most Wii gamers don´t care if the game needs to be scaled back as long as they try to do something special for us with the motion controls and its still fundamentally the same game. We do not like being left out with some of these "multiplatform" games! But of course this will all be up to sales what they decide.

@StarlightHunter, instead of ms doing what they always try to do and buy out or shut down other companies, what should be done, in the off chance that there ever became need for one console, is sony, nintendo and ms should go into business TOGETHER to create the ultimate system.

sounds like a load of bullcrap to me. capcom has been one of the most popular developers in north america since the days of the original nintendo. just look at the success of the street fighter series, megaman series and so forth. if this guy is saying that they could only find success here by releasing games on the xbox, then he's either an idiot, for not realizing just how popular capcom has been here all these years, or they were paid off by ms to give the 360 tons of support. both seems highly likely to me.

@thenephariouson I think in the future it will all boil down to service. The same reason you may purchase a Samsung television unit as opposed to a Sony; it all depends on which company you prefer based on warranty, customer service, etc. But let's not forget that first party developers are always going to remain exclusive to their console (e.g. "God of War," "Halo" or "Super Mario Bros"). I think third-party exclusivity is silly and certainly not beneficial economically, but its to the choice of the developer.

@ StarlightHunter, Actually, no. The reason we are having good consoles is because of the heavy competition between Nintendo, MS and Sony. If one of them gains monopoly, the users will suffer. Do you think MS would have made this many price cuts if there was no Sony or nintendo?

well it makes sense seeing that a huge percentage of the earths population is in america and europe. which is why japan are selling to them. @thenephariouson, yes their will only be the need for one console if every single game was multiplatform. it would be good to see ms buy out sony and nintendo and create a awseom console for everyone.

Japan is in a depression since 1997, caused by the Kobe quake of 1995 that destroyed all of the game companies' plants and offices, and the second factor is that the Japanese real estate housing bubble burst in 1997. The Japanese government kept propping up the the economy there with phony stimulus plans but those collapsed within the last three years, causing, for the first time ever, high employment in Japan. This has led to the niche hobby markets in Japan, like anime, manga, models, video games, etc. to just go down the drain. Video games are down by a few percent overall when compared to the pre-Kobe quake numbers, but anime/manga combined drop was reported in 2007 to be down 41%. Hobbies are just barely hanging on over there. This is why American gamers are the focus. Of course, if Capcom was actually smart, every game they release would have a HUGE market blitz over all segments of the market, TV show tie-ins, comics books that can be bought cheaply at a grocery store, and Wii and DS releases, and even Windows and Mac OS X releases. Of course, Capcom has been screaming and kicking about everything since the Dreamcast was cancelled, and have yet to get themselves out of the debt caused by the lack of sales that was achieved in that era.

I'm personally really glad Capcom decided to push western releases on the 360, I've got a ton of enjoyment out of their 360 offerings, although I didn't really like Lost Planet...In any case, I don't really care whats exclusive and whats not, PS3 players need to stop petitioning over something they lost and play the games they do have. Some PS3 games blow my frakking face off! you've got nothing to be scared of little Sonites, everything will be okay in the end.

excuse me MassacreMonk, but you awakened some curiosity in me, do you only play ps3 exclusives? no multiplatform whatsoever? or what is your point of box owners having nothing to play? if that's the case then you basically just started to use your ps3 and must be mighty proud.. jesus christ, it is genuinly awesome, that game developers are making an effort towards multiplatform..

I own all systems and like many have said they all have their strengths and weakness, that petition is also dumb too didnt their parents teach them how to share? all systems should get all games and dlc and we all would be happy, err maybe not we may have more petitions or an outcry making fanboys shed a panda tear down their cheek lol
