Inafune explains Capcom's Xbox 360 push

Publisher's managing director says controversial support for Microsoft's console was necessary to find success in the West.

The Xbox 360 is consistently outperformed by the Wii and PlayStation 3 in Capcom's native Japan, but its popularity in the West is undeniable. According to managing executive Keiji Inafune, it was this fact that led Capcom to heavily support Microsoft's console with timed exclusives such as Dead Rising and Lost Planet, as well as multiplatform efforts such as Devil May Cry 4.

Keiji Inafune
Keiji Inafune

"I think I can only get away with saying this now, but I really thought that using the Xbox was the only way to break into overseas markets, and I took that hypothesis all the way," said Inafune. "In the end, I am very happy that I did so." Inafune's comments came by way of an internal interview posted today to the publisher's official Web site.

One of the more dramatic controversies of 2007 was Capcom's decision to abandon PlayStation exclusivity for its Devil May Cry franchise. The move inspired many an irate PS3 owner to flood the publisher's official forums with messages decrying the decision, with more than 10,000 gamers signing an online petition pledging to boycott future Capcom games. In the end, however, the strong blowback was for naught, and DMC4 went on to achieve multiplatinum sales shortly after its release. The game was later released for the PC.

Though Capcom initially released both Dead Rising and Lost Planet as console exclusives for the Xbox 360, they have subsequently been ported to other systems. A year on from its initial showing on the Xbox 360 and PC, Lost Planet was ported to the PS3. Two and a half years after its debut on Microsoft's console, the paired-down Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop arrived for the Wii.

Capcom is currently working on both Dead Rising 2 and Lost Planet 2. However, unlike their predecessors, both games have reportedly been slated from the beginning as multiconsole efforts.

Capcom is the smartest game company right now in my opinion. They develop good games, they have smart business tactics, and they listen to their consumers. Hopefully they have great future installments since they have been very consistent over the years.

Sepewrath Posted Mar 4, 2009 2:13 pm GMT -12 360 owners had better thank the floundering Japanese market, if not for that there wouldn't have been such a necessity to perform in other markets. I dont think the 360 would be seeing games like Final Fantasy and RE5 if not for the expected success in the western market vs the uncertain normal success in Japan. =================== If Sony wasn't an arse on how they handled PS3, most of them games would have stayed in that platform (which is actually good for gamers paving for multi-console) looking back at the success of PS2. By the way, what's wrong with everybody enjoying the game in all consoles? Why so selfish? Heads up, Nintendo and Microsoft are here to stay. Get over it.

Does it really matter what system you own? granted, its a cool idea that THIS game can only be for THIS system but, let's face it: in today's economy it's just not realistic. Besides, you have to take the good with the bad and IF you REALLY want a certain game why not make another investment in that system?

I think this is the reality of things these days. The days of third party exclusives, I think, are coming to an deserved end. Why shouldn't the game developer not want to maximize their profit? It's one thing when the game is being developed internally, but it makes perfect sense for a developer like Capcom or Konami to maka games multiconsole. If I was a Squeenix suit, why would I want to make my next FF game just PS 3 exclusive because of some loyalty thing and stand to miss out on tapping into the millions of sales that could generated from the Xbox 360 owners? Third party exclusives made sense during the days of PS 1 and PS 2 because those consoles so completely dominated the market over their rivals you wouldn't miss out on much by making the game console exclusive. However these days, the domination is not that extreme. While it's true that Xbox 360 and Wii are outperforming the PS 3, the market is comparatively more even that those days, so to maximize profit, you have to make multiconsole. I'm partial to the PS 3, but I don't really care for third party exclusives as long as the game itself is good.

Sepewrath I see your point. You may not realize the truth. The japanese market is so much smaller than ours. With the PS3 not preforming to their expectations. It makes sense in the end.I hate third party exclusives. I support XBOX 360 to the end. However I wouldn't mind if epic never made Gears exclusive. To the point our world is in an economic crisis. Not just the states. So I look for more of this to happen soon.

@mop88, while we're at it, why don't we have pc manufacturers limited to the same internal hardware, so programming can remain the same for developers. I think the competion is what keeps these game companies and console manufactures increasing the technology.I think a one console future is rubbish, and enjoy having a choice in buying which console suits me better.

Yeah, the boycott thing was very immature, and as a proud 360 owner I'm happy Capcom has embraced the console, rather than being all suspicious of it like most Japanese publishers have been. And yeah, it would be great to see Capcom return to some of their old IPs - I actually liked the direction the last Breath of Fire took, so it would be interesting to see any other unusual ideas they have in store for that series.

Hahahaha. Oh no, 10,000 people said they won't buy Capcom games anymore if they make titles for a console that has over 25million units sold world wide. Hmmm, let's see here... 25million users - 10,000 jackasses = Fanboys are stupid

LOL...boycott them...LOL... Yes better a developer be dead, buried and forgotten then try to sell their product to a wider audience. After all it's all about hardcore gamers bragging rights...nothing else matters.

I hope that Capcom will bring back their old franchises like Breath of Fire, Strider (make it 3D playground with 2D gameplay), Captain Commando (same 3D/2D), Maximo and Darkstalkers (with or without Udon).

The idea of a singel console as "better for consumers" is plain out ridiculous. It would kill off hardware progress. The simple truth is that competition creates excellence and progress, while a single enforced standard results in stagnation.

bells and whistles of a console is one thing, but new features for a fair and equal product like lost planet for ps3 and xbox 360 have enough differences to be considered upgraded not bells and whstles. The off context of GTA4 bells and whistles for ps3 and Xbox360 is there 2. But let me see it was released as a same product. So i wonder if there is some class action lawsuit brewing somewhere somehow? I like both i want and expect capcom to deliver fairly now since they are starting multiconsole efforts.

@starfoxmcleoud yes i though the Steel Battalion Online was great too. i have always had all the game systems and had lots of experiences. its one thing if its for a certain system. but completely another if its for both systems and not supported equally. and @star77241 the wii is boring and for kids who have yet to have certain round ojects drop outta there abdomen. i had a wii and sold it. bought a second and sold it due to never using it and needin money. so please keep wii outta it cause the games we are refering to will never meet the games play and graphical mechanics of the other 2 systems so please butt that jive out.

I read an interesting article a little while back (maybe on gamespot) where an analyst hoped and expected developers to eventually just make their own versions of the same console (like the way different companies make televisions that do the same thing). This is the way it should be, having three totally unique and different consoles is completely backwards financially and as gamers we would only benefit from a "universal console" that can play all games regardless of brand. Fanboyism would still exist but to a much smaller degree and would no longer focus on games but more on the little bells and whistles each manufacturer added to their console, and anyone who gets fanboyed up about those little things is a pu$$y anyway so who cares!

'what is RE5' ....................if i didn't know the answer to that, i wouldn't be a gamer now would i, the 5th resident evil, takes place in Africa, co-op multiplayer (all i remember due to lack of interest and like of horror video games.) i'm getting rather tired of seeing mostly shooters......seriously, i want my god damn JRPGs. they are fun, interesting, and some can keep you busy a LONG time. (Shin Megami Tensei series for instance.) i really love Breath of Fire, i have BoF3 (its broken now though. :( ), BoF4, BoF 1 (on GBA), and BoF 2 (again, GBA). i was young when playing dragon quarter, so i didn't get very far (never even got past the very first part despite several tries.) but i was too young to say whether it was good or bad. anyway, i just don't want capcom to go the way of other companies, ignoring their RPGs and screwing us RPG fans even further, and focusing on shooters which is over rated beyond belief. (don't get me wrong, i like shooters, im just tired of them, espescially WW2 shooters.)

I'm sorry but even if all 10k of those people did not buy a Capcom game, the sheer amount of sales the Xbox 360 brought for their games easily covered that and more. Capcom is smart, they know where the majority of gamers are and it's not on the PS3.

@firesage423 lmao....sounds a little fanboyish....saints row 2 is not my style either. i guess it dont get no tactical than Socom, PS3 exclusive that is still very over looked. But im not talking exclusives, im talking capcom need to made it 100% in content for the game on both systems. Times are changing and people want quality and full experiences. So capcom just better think of that before they keep selling their souls to mircosoft. They mayend up like emsemble or FASA someday or someway.

yes but to keep the masses truely happy the games price tagg needs to come with content support for the game a whole to keep people attached, not attached to a system. i just think that they could market it that way, so instead of getiing 25mil for a xpansion pack exclusiveness offer the expansion for 12.5 mil to each corp. and still make your money for the offering. but it generate more since if its a great game everyone on both systems will buy equalling more revenues. end of story. i like xbox but im tired of major companies hugging microsofts buttocks. they need to share the love.

The main problem with exclusivity of any kind is it does affect the amount of profit that developers and publishers earn from their titles. Less profit means less money re-invested into future titles which comprimises the quality of games. Put simply, games are expensive to make. So they want to sell more games, to make more money, to make better games. A game released on more than one platform has a greater chance of selling more copies because it is made available to more potential customers.
