Inafune explains Capcom's Xbox 360 push

Publisher's managing director says controversial support for Microsoft's console was necessary to find success in the West.

The Xbox 360 is consistently outperformed by the Wii and PlayStation 3 in Capcom's native Japan, but its popularity in the West is undeniable. According to managing executive Keiji Inafune, it was this fact that led Capcom to heavily support Microsoft's console with timed exclusives such as Dead Rising and Lost Planet, as well as multiplatform efforts such as Devil May Cry 4.

Keiji Inafune
Keiji Inafune

"I think I can only get away with saying this now, but I really thought that using the Xbox was the only way to break into overseas markets, and I took that hypothesis all the way," said Inafune. "In the end, I am very happy that I did so." Inafune's comments came by way of an internal interview posted today to the publisher's official Web site.

One of the more dramatic controversies of 2007 was Capcom's decision to abandon PlayStation exclusivity for its Devil May Cry franchise. The move inspired many an irate PS3 owner to flood the publisher's official forums with messages decrying the decision, with more than 10,000 gamers signing an online petition pledging to boycott future Capcom games. In the end, however, the strong blowback was for naught, and DMC4 went on to achieve multiplatinum sales shortly after its release. The game was later released for the PC.

Though Capcom initially released both Dead Rising and Lost Planet as console exclusives for the Xbox 360, they have subsequently been ported to other systems. A year on from its initial showing on the Xbox 360 and PC, Lost Planet was ported to the PS3. Two and a half years after its debut on Microsoft's console, the paired-down Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop arrived for the Wii.

Capcom is currently working on both Dead Rising 2 and Lost Planet 2. However, unlike their predecessors, both games have reportedly been slated from the beginning as multiconsole efforts.

I imagine Capcom were developing their Framework engine just before the 360 was released, and that the engine itself is rather PC-based (like most game engines.) Games like Dead Rising and Lost Planet were pretty easy to make for the 360, and it's the reason why we've seen good PC ports of said games. I know the PS3 wasn't out around the time DR and LP were out, and I imagine when Capcom did get their hands on the PS3 dev-kits, it took them abit of time to get their engine running smoothly.

So Capcom makes a smart business move to get a foothold in the Western Market resulting in more business which then allows it to continue making great games for everyone to enjoy. Am I missing something?

@Ash2X Actually you're wrong if you want everything that you get free on the PS3 on 360, the 360 is like 100$ more expensive

Flopstation 3 huh? What did Halo Wars get again I forgot. What games does 360 have this year, someone remind me. All I see is DLC and multiplats. Maybe if MS actually made some games you guys would have something to play this year.

Nah....Timed Exclusives are gay btw and make no sense, all the Devs are saying they are going to make more money going multi-platform so why not release them at the same time? Instead of helping one systems sales by releasing games months ahead of another. There is no reason for them to do that. Think about it..... You know the developers can make or break a system, developers need to throw a bone to Sony every once in awhile imo if they are going to play like that, imagine console gaming if Sony dropped out of it. I dunno about you guys but, I don't wanna just play Microsoft stuff.

Personally, I don't see why everyone complains about capcom making games for the 360. ppl have to remember capcom made games for both the Sega Genesis and Super nintendo. especially with the street fighter games. So what if devil may cry 3 went multiplatform gamers who own one of both systems bought a copy of the game for their respective console(s) If capcom or any 3rd party developer wants to make multiplatform games just be happy, stop whining and just enjoy games for what it is...Fun and entertaining. There will be times when games will be either on the 360 first then on the ps3 or end up on both systems.

eternity21, exactly capcom just saw money signs, and decident to release games on the 360 and the wii, aka getting more money and making games like DMC4 to be more popular than ever. 10,000 signed a petition, why?, i dont think capcom will really care what 10,000 people have to say.

capcom used to be a sony developer, im glad they have gone independent, i was worried that resi 5 would only be a ps3 exclusive. youve gotta thank ms for getting these games for us and capcom. @Gaming_Guru_Guy comment liek that indicate that your a ps3 fanboy and that second rate console is blasting your ps3 out of the water.

Wow Capcom, you made 2 exclusive games at the time for the only next-gen console that was actually out... Brilliant marketing plan, you guys should get a cookie or something. This article is simply to induce flame wars.

It's to bad Capcom had to focus on such a second rate system like XBOX 360 to find some success here in the west. I think the Street Fighter 4 numbers will make them reconsider this stand.

LOL @ fanboys. We have a Wii, Xbox360 and PS3 in our house. They are ALL brilliant consoles with their good points and flaws. Wii is unique and fun, PS3 has technically brilliant games and xbox has a great online community. Why don't people show interest in all games on consoles instead of picking one and kissing its backside. Even if you cant afford all 3, there is no need to bit*h about the ones you don't have. It really is sad and i'm sick of seeing comment pages littered with this bullcr*p. Grow up ffs.

Wow, they signed an online petition, in the end, DMC 4 still sold well? nice idea =) I think we should start 1 right away for Mass Effect... I wonder if they did online petition for FF too? Nowaday, I cant seem to find the use of having a 2 different console that support most game in market right now. It's like a computer, This fella using Dell to play oblivion, and the other fella using ASUS to play oblivion. same game, different brand. So, Wii was the best, non of their game can be play on either next-gen consoles.

Well, if it helps anyone, Capcom, in an official statement, has announced they were working on a 360 release for Lost Planet 2 but they have not actually said it would be exclusive. Since no words for the PS3 versions were spoken, we can only assume that Lost Planet 2 will first be available on the 360 then will be available for the PS3 like the first one did. Which is stupid of Capcom in a way, they should have, in their announcement, said that they were working on the PC, PS3 and 360 versions of the game instead. Now look at what they've done, google "Lost Planet 2 exclusive" and see what happens, the media is going frenzy, half saying it is and the other half saying it isn't. Next thing you know, we'll get a fanboy petition coming out to bite Capcom in the "derriere". I love Capcom, always have, but this was not a wise move if you ask me. It's great that they're showing support to one machine but it would be so much greater if they were showing support to all those people funding their business aka "we", the gamers.

more people that play a game, better it is. for consoles, publishers and gamers. just wish devs would strive to make games work to best on each console rather than lowest common denominator programming. I wish and hope for the day when cross-platform online gaming would be possible. some of my friends got 360 only or PS3 only and it really bugs us that we all buy the same game yet ALL can't play together coz some happen to have different console.

Look I like both consoles I own a 360 and I am planning to get a PS3. This War of the words that happens here at GS whenever a news is being posted about a console maker or a video gaming company that wants to do something about a specific console is really childlish. There are some people who likes thier consoles and plays videogames on it, while there are other who not only like but loves thier consoles so much that they come to this topic boards and try to shove insults into other peoples throats for buying something different. Yeah Capcom went Multiplatform it is because making a videogame costs are really high these days and they need a larger share of market then the previous generation of gaming. So console exclusives doesnt help in this regard.

I think Capcom is glad they're not run by fanboys. The day a developer and publisher acquiesces to fanboy ranting is the day they should stop being a company and become a laughinstock of the businessworld. Plus, I think if a company did that their shareholders would revolt.

"the 360 still has teh advantage of a better controller over the PS3" that is so ridiculously funny i almost spit soda all over my keyboard. MGS proves him wrong, it's great games that give you recognition, not supporting one system over the other. having said that, capcom makes some of the best games out there, therefore, they should just release them for all the systems at the same time.

i wish there was more console excusivity, so the developers can tailor the game to run best on that specific system. Enough of this lowest common denominator programming.

No one should hate on Capcom for wanting to spread their games out onto multiple platforms. The stir about DMC4 going multi plat was silly. The only time gamers should petition a dev or game is when they are being deprive the game or content.

All games being equal, the 360 still has teh advantage of a better controller over the PS3. I'm not sure if the cut down wii version of dead rising should make the 360 version 'non exclusve' seeing as they are different games with the same ideas. Chop til you drop is missing practically half the game.

I am not a huge fan of exclusive games, however, I think that certain trademark games/characters should be specific to certain consoles/game makers. Otherwise, it makes better sense to have your game available for as many gamers as possible, regardless of the platform. That is how you make money as a developer.

I think this man is a fool. the only reason that the 360 capcom games sold better in the begining was because they actually supported them unlike most of the wii games they have made exsept RE4 whitch I wish they would just make RE5 wii with an improved RE4 engine. The fact is that capcom really didn't bother making good game on any other systems but the 360. Witch is dumb because there are deffenatly more wii systems in america than 360s. It is dishonorable that they didn't support the PS3 from the begining. overall if I was capcom I would watch my back and hope that all my 360 games sell well because it only takes one bad title to kill thier company. If this keeps up I am going to have to not buy any games from Blue Bomber anymore

staying with the ps3 is like trusting ur captain while the ship is sinking, seriously the ps3 hit a major ice burg when it started, they was onli a handful of games that came to the rescue like MGS4, Uncharted and Resistance, which sony should be on their knees forever grateful, x360 was smooth sailing until the hidden crack in the hull which would be the red ring of death was revealed but even with that the 360 is dominant and ps3 fanboys are too stupid, technically capcom could have only released their game for the xbox and they still would have been doing great, so if anything u ps3 owners should be grateful that they decided to multi platform their games or they would have not made enuff money to make even greater games to add to your very limited ps3 game collection, if a game company can make more money by going multiplatform then go for it since the more money they make the more greater the next game should be, thats how it works

Capcom already 1year ago they now only make multiplatform games, HD game are too expensive. Which explains why dead rising 2, lost planet and any new HD game will be ps360. Sometimes even PC too, after the console launch.
