Inafune explains Capcom's Xbox 360 push

Publisher's managing director says controversial support for Microsoft's console was necessary to find success in the West.

The Xbox 360 is consistently outperformed by the Wii and PlayStation 3 in Capcom's native Japan, but its popularity in the West is undeniable. According to managing executive Keiji Inafune, it was this fact that led Capcom to heavily support Microsoft's console with timed exclusives such as Dead Rising and Lost Planet, as well as multiplatform efforts such as Devil May Cry 4.

Keiji Inafune
Keiji Inafune

"I think I can only get away with saying this now, but I really thought that using the Xbox was the only way to break into overseas markets, and I took that hypothesis all the way," said Inafune. "In the end, I am very happy that I did so." Inafune's comments came by way of an internal interview posted today to the publisher's official Web site.

One of the more dramatic controversies of 2007 was Capcom's decision to abandon PlayStation exclusivity for its Devil May Cry franchise. The move inspired many an irate PS3 owner to flood the publisher's official forums with messages decrying the decision, with more than 10,000 gamers signing an online petition pledging to boycott future Capcom games. In the end, however, the strong blowback was for naught, and DMC4 went on to achieve multiplatinum sales shortly after its release. The game was later released for the PC.

Though Capcom initially released both Dead Rising and Lost Planet as console exclusives for the Xbox 360, they have subsequently been ported to other systems. A year on from its initial showing on the Xbox 360 and PC, Lost Planet was ported to the PS3. Two and a half years after its debut on Microsoft's console, the paired-down Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop arrived for the Wii.

Capcom is currently working on both Dead Rising 2 and Lost Planet 2. However, unlike their predecessors, both games have reportedly been slated from the beginning as multiconsole efforts.

Makes complete sense... when Dead Rising and Lost Planet debuted, PS3 had a weak install base in the US. Now that PS3 has gained significant ground, there are better earnings outlooks on games released for that platform. You don't exactly have to be a business major to deduce what happened here.

hhhhmmmmm makes a whole lotta sense one such as I.... then again I'm and x-box fan so why not... hush404 Posted Mar 3, 2009 1:59 pm PT Here's a dumb question. Wouldn't a game that's multiplatform make a better "battering ram" into "western gamers" hearts? than something that's exclusive? Honestly, reaching a bigger audience than just one system? ....................believe me I'm saying the same thing about Metal Gear Solid 4. I would buy it just for the achievements, and custom soundtracks..... AND YES I'm a proud Playstation 3 owner..... So I really don't care what game comes out exclusive for any console. The chances are that without a doubt I'll be getting it either way.!!!!!! THen again I'm just a hardcore gamer!!! *now lets look at all those thumbs down I'm going to get for stating my opinion!*

Fanboys represent a fraction of their customers, a tiny minority that doesn't impact their fiscal year by much. Ironic though, when you read a fanboyish comment, to see how determined and proud they are to support blindly their product of choice, when in the end their voices are mute. They even petitioned and asked Capcom to halve their profit just to please them, how important do they think they are? A reality check is in order.

10K fanboys took the time to sign a petition against Capcom developing for the 360? GET A LIFE! You clowns have been spending TOO much time on your PS3's! lol I have a 360 AND a PS3, and I will never buy a wii because I have not seen one nintendo game yet I 'MUST' have. I am definitely not their target audience. I do favour my 360 because simply the games look better, there are more of them, the controller fits better in my hand, and online play is LIGHTYEARS ahead of sony's service. I bought a PS3 last October, picking up Uncharted, Warhawk, downloading Wipeout, and preordering SOCOM and the headset. Until Killzone 2 and MLB 09 The Show, that was all that was worth playing. I used it more for Blueray than anything else. I do like the system, but it just doesn't have the software yet. Killzone 2 and The Show are the BOMB though, as well as Uncharted and Wipeout. God of War is gonna PWN EVERYONE, and Uncharted 2 looks great as well. In the end, they are both great systems, so get over all the fanboy crap. Capcom made an intelligent BUSINESS decision, and that is the way it is!

How shallow do you have to be that you would boycott a company just because they release games for multiple platforms. So it used to be a PS3 exclusive and now it's multi-platform. So what? You still get the games. Do you dislike owners of other consoles so much that you're not willing to share good games with them? It's just ridiculous how sensitive people are about their choice of console.

rmoorevtps3 yes the ps3 is superior to the xbox360 but only on the cpu side, the gpu and memory are almost the same with the ps3 taking the advantage of having 256MB of XDR while the xbox360 can access all of its 512MB GDDR3 memory with the ps3 gpu only having access to 256 MB. Now if u've ever had a capable pc you would know that the gpu is much more important when playing games than your cpu is. One example of this is Crysis, while the PS3 arguably has the most powerfull CPU of any gaming pc/console it can't run Crysis because it is too taxing on the GPU.

It would've been nice to see Dead Rising 2 and Lost Planet 2 exclusive to the 360, since we know games made specifically for one console seems to benefit technologically and overall performance wise.

So basically what this dude is saying is that Capcom decided to favor the 360 for their games with more Western appeal, so they could "tap those markets" before the PS3 was even released. Being the technical geniuses they are, much of what Capcom does from here on out, will be multi-plat, because they know that the PS3 is on track to meet the 360 in sales, its only a matter of time, they are basically equals after all, barring some nuts and bolts elements that only make a difference to a few people. Yet another article designed to fan the flames of the never ending flaming console flame war, nursed and sustained by total flamers. Flame on.

It wasn't a controversial move. Fanboys still forget that this is a business. They are out to make profits, so how what sense did it make keeping a popular franchise exclusive to a system that was last in next-gen system sales? Capcom should have ignored those idiots because they more than likely were just blowing smoke and end up buying the game anyway.

@zaku101: It does seem to be heading in that direction, yes. Devastating console failures, scratched disk problems, freezing, crashing, skipping, terrible customer service....yet still going strong. These problems on almost any other previously released system (aside from PS2) would have most definitely killed it. Despite everything, it's still my most used console. You can't deny there's something special about Microsoft's little machine.

@ Ogelthorpe. First 360 doesn't have better games ,2 games for both systems only look slightly better on the 360 because some developers make the games on the 360 first then port it on the ps3 i do hope you know that? but games made on the ps3 first look much much better then the 360 true fact.

ogelthorpe- You're living in 2006! This is 2009! Developers know what they are doing with the PS3 now. It is not a debate, its a FACT that the PS3 has more powerful hardware than the 360. All you have to do is think a little more progressively and realize that yes, the PS3 was going to eventually overpower the 360. It has begun with Killzone 2. It will continue with Uncharted 2, God of War 3, and Gran Turismo 5. Just think in like 2 years when we get Killzone 3 with further optimization of the engine. Guerrilla Games has already stated they can get much more out of the PS3 hardware. I think you Sir, are the one who needs to get his head out of the sand.

rmoorevtps3 - Not only does the 360 have better games than the PS3, the shared titles are usually the superior version. That's not to say the PS3 is a bad system by any means, but you need to get your head out of the sand.

I'm glad that Capcom decided to support the 360. Hopefully more Japanese companies will take note, and release more games on the 360. I really want to see Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm (or the older Ultimate Ninja games) and Valkyria Chronicles for the console.

tonicmole- 360 does not have more games than PS3. PS3 has better games in my opinion. We will continue to see all the multiplatform games looking great for both consoles, while the PS3 exclusives will be pulling away and making the truly special games. romans828_2002- Your opinion is flawed. Multi-plats IN THE PAST not looking as good on the PS3 is due to lazy developers and that reason only. The PS3 hardware has 2.18 teraflops of total system performance, compared to 360's 1 teraflop of performance. Killzone 2 is just the beginning, PS3 exclusive games have now officially started pulling ahead of 360 games. Wait for Uncharted 2, God of War 3, and GT 5. These games are going to blow peoples minds. The PS3 was going to eventually have better looking games, there was no getting around that FACT, all you have to do is look at both systems specs to understand that. Now that the time is here, and developers understand the console more, be prepared to have PS3 games looking better than 360 games. I have no qualms with you enjoying your 360, but don't blindly think it will magically be keeping up with Sony's console when it has less capable hardware.

Given the success of Dead Rising and Lost Planet on the 360, I figure they made the right decision. Of course the PS3 didn't have much of a following when either of those titles came out. There is a much bigger PS3 audience now.

@coaltango It's not that people can't buy PS3's in the US, it's that they are not. We really need to strip away this Sony, Microsoft, Nintindo garbage. All three want money. These are not religions or something. Judge each console by what it is and what games it has, not what logo is on it. I have a 360 now because it has more games, but next gen is up in the air. Maybe I'll get the PS 4, or Wii2, don't know until I see what they got. I guess that makes be a video game agnostic.

Yes I was really torn on wheither to purchase a PS3 or an Xbox. The 360 had Gears 2 coming out ... a big sway factor, but when I heard Resident Evil 5 was confirmed for the 360 that sealed the deal. Even though I consider myself a hardcore Playstation fan .. and hate Microsoft and almost everything they do. Now Sony no longer has Grand Theft Auto OR Final Fantasy as exclusives but I'm still glad to hear their console is selling pretty darn well considering.

no sony fan should ever complain that ff is going to be on the 360. i mean look at what system ff started on which the NES.hence if a sony fan compains about means that its only ok when sony does it. the main fact is that companies are here for money. if selling games on mutiple systems gets them the most money they will go for it. i mean most gaming companies are not like the movie industry and can be bought to produce in one format. which is what sony did with blue ray

"Now that 360 multiplats are performing better than or equal to their PS3 counterparts, it can also be stated that the 360 has no bearing on the overall quality of the PS3 ports." This is blatantly untrue. Like it or not the PS3 is a more capable piece of hardware, but one which is much harder to use. Multiplatform releases have zero reason to bother optimizing for PS3, "360 level" is good enough.

well to me thats just common sense, so i pretty much knew that was reason when it started happening. i mean i definitely understand loyalty to a console (especially when optimized for a certain console's hardware), but going multiplatform is an undeniably smart thing to do for a lot of companies, especially for ones like capcom who can deliver good quality across multiple platforms

Honestly i could care less if capcom makes games for both consoles, as long as both consoles get the same finished product and subsequent support, ala Lost Planet Colonies being 360 pc exclusives while the regular lost planet wasnt. I loved Dead Rising, one of my first 360 games, and devil may cry 4 and lost planet are both favorites of mine, and im looking forward to LP2 and DR2.
