NPD: July sees PS3 overtake 360 in Canada

Game-industry sales surge 62 percent north of the border, thanks to post-price-cut surge of Sony console; Wii, DS still dominate.

When game-industry research firm NPD releases US retail figures for the month of July, some analysts expect that they will show the PlayStation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 for the first time, thanks to a pre-E3 Media & Business Summit price drop. Regardless of how the numbers shake out in the US, NPD confirmed to GameSpot today that the PS3 outsold Microsoft's console north of the border.

The PS3 managed to move more than 15,000 systems in Canada for the month, overtaking the 13,000 Xbox 360s sold. However, both consoles were bested handily by Nintendo's Wii, which racked up more than 36,000 sales for the month. On the portable side of the market, the DS topped all non-PC platforms in July with almost 46,000 units sold, well ahead of the PlayStation Portable's 6,000 tally.

The industry as a whole was up more than 62 percent for the month, to C$84 million ($78.9 million) from the C$51.8 million ($48.7 million) it managed in July 2006. Portable hardware sales were up slightly, but console hardware revenues for the month more than tripled, leading to an overall 11 percent increase for systems, up to C$35.8 million ($33.6 million).

On the software side of the business, growth was significant, but not as explosive. Overall software sales were up more than 30 percent, to C$38.2 million ($35.9 million), led by a 43 percent increase in console software. Portable games only managed 8 percent growth for the month. Rounding out the industry picture, accessory sales were up more than 78 percent, to C$10 million ($9.4 million).

The best-selling games chart yielded a few surprises. Activision's Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s was the best-selling new release, but only managed to make it to the fourth spot. Nintendo's Wii Play (which comes packed with a spare Wii Remote) was the best-seller of the month, and the original PlayStation 2 Guitar Hero II topped its Encore by coming in second. A value pack of randomly assorted Xbox games came in third. The rest of the best-selling software titles are listed below.

Canada's top 10 best-selling games for July 2007:

1. Wii Play with Wii Remote--Wii
2. Guitar Hero II with guitar--PS2
3. Value Pack (included games vary)--Xbox
4. Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s--PS2
5. Pokémon Diamond--DS
6. Mario Party 8--Wii
7. Guitar Hero II with guitar--Xbox 360
8. Transformers: The Game--PS2
9. Pokémon Pearl--DS
10. New Super Mario Bros.--DS

I think its funny that it only sold 2000 more. I own all three consoles and I have to say i am laughing at the ps3 all the hype and mumbo jumbo sony talked at the begining just like with the ps2's emotion engine and how it can do 66 million pollygon blah blah blah. Sony talks to much trash and they need to stop it. furthermore all i hear is 360 red ring this and that hey all you sony fanboys dont sit there and lie to me on how many disk read errors you have had with the ps2 for the first 5 yrs i my self had 7 ill admit it I also had 4 360 go on me untill my elite. So yeah the 360 might of had its rebuys but I will bet you all that the ps2 had 50 times that in rebuys than the 360, regular xbox, and gamecubes combined. I know this because I use to work at eb games in the briarwood mall in ann arbor michigan from 11/02/1997 to 09/25/2003 and from the date the ps2 came out 10/26/2000 just our store alone would average about 10 a week and thats being nice.

hum AV2 on PC now that game was awesome! i still play with my 5.1 surround Klipsch speaker off the chart ! when the scanners goes beep beep !bouuh ya btw if MS 360 EVER get a sequel to Freelancer then boom they got me hands down! as for the online service from sony , they do not charge for anything relating to playing online. i want to play motorstorm ? its free! i want to play nhl 2k7 ? its free! now thats sweet! but yes i do agree to some extend that the ms xboxlive is good, but way limited in its compatibility with other gaming networks ( such as playing against PC gamers) and if you decided to play MMO you have to pay them also shudders

Halo was released for PC much much later wures& and anyway it really depends on how you like your shooter as for Sigil-otaku pls bear in mind for RPG im looking on past history with the old Xbox not the 360 but currently it is still pretty weak on that part, Even sony has not a huge line of title announced yet but they have some big names working on rpg for them such as arenanet, atlus, square ( also on 360 that i am eager to see what new IP they will release for them) and others, Currently PC is eating the market of MMORPG with warcraft and guild wars( Guild wars may also be counted as a RPG) as for console superiority i am talking about more then just '"graphic" it will take some time before we see the difference between PS3 and 360 parts of it is because they have been out a bit longer and in the hands of designer and dev the 360 will be getting the really great games soon enough ( about 2 to 3 years from SDK delivery is when you start seeing the big Gems come out most of it that is), as for the rest its from a developper stand point. having a console brokent down in many different version with missing or downright different output and support is really bad. how can you develop a game that MUST use a HD when not all the user base for your targeted console market have one? or when not all of them have 1080p support? or HD format disc? etc thats a place where problem arise. in the end MS would have been better off streamlining the basic ground of the 360 and making sure every version where similar to the core, IE all HD , all 1080p and etc so that its a lot easier to release and develop games for that market. also one thing that is interesting is that even thought both 360 and PS3 have mouse and keyboard support only the PS3 will have this option and that the PC and PS3 version are fully compatible ( even so that mods maps and such will be compatible with the ps3 version ). In esence i am frustrated to see that MS took some turn that could potentialy cost them lots of points in the longer run of things

Truthfully, I cannot believe so many people are buying wii's! I mean it was alright for the first week or so but, it gets lame quick! I love my PS3 but truthfully it's collecting dust right now cuz there's nothing good on it (YET!) My 360 and PC are what's rockin everyday. The 360 is hands down the best system (for games) and the PC rules over all with so many strategy and MMO's!

surely it gets to a point where most discerning gamers have already purchased their 360's and have no need of purchasing a 2nd one? the same can be said of the Wii and PS3. there will come a point when pretty much all the hardcore and casual gamers have their console and sales of the boxes themselves will decline, whereas software sales increase?

That's good for Sony. Too bad that isn't happening in America and Japan (the two biggest countries for gaming). But Nintendo's still dominating... in pretty much all the countries.

To the noob who said UT2003, Farcry, and BF1942 was out before Halo, here's a quick history lesson. UT2003 released 2002, Farcry released 2004, BF1942 released 2002, and first Halo released end of 2001. Halo did own "back in the day".

to answer both fat_boy_phil and PSdual_wielder, if you know the history of nintendo you will notice that unfortunatly it still refuses to learn from its mistake which is why i do not believe that overall they will really be the ''gamer'' console war winners. will they sell more ? probly for a very long run but keep in mind gamecube was also a lot cheaper.... Nintendo as a bad reputation with third party developper high cost of licensing and publication as always been its lowest points, also it rarely takes into account input from them ( think of how Squaresoft was all friend with them years ago) and let it be know that a long long time a go it was them nintendo who approach sony to develop something called the Nintendo playstation ! we all know how that story ended :P and btw look into the Jaguar and the fable M2 platform that never saw the lights of days ( a 3D0 addon similar to the sega cd)

To Franksoul: I can see how you can say that about Fable 2 (Fable was never one of my personal favourite games) but Eternal sonata and Lost oddyssey haven't been released and blue dragon has only been shown a demo. the story is meant to be the most compelling part and the battle system itself was pretty good which in the demo the game mechanics are the main thing put to the test. Please clarify which game you were talking about. I know of no current RPG that holds more interest to me than Lost oddyssey (including FFXIII) so I don't believe there is anything for me to worry about with the quality but I do agree that I would prefer more quantity when it comes to RPG's on the 360. Sounds a little biased your view on the 360 in my opinion. Despite being older it still holds its own against the much more expensive and newer PS3. The limits of the 360 are not even close, graphically it may be possible but if graphics are all you care about then there is no argument to be had really, your choice would be based on something weightless. I don't get how people can cite the 360 as a mediocre improvement and then presume the PS3 is so great when the 360 and PS3 are almost identicle spare the expensive next gen DVD drive. Anthony71B: Never said there wasn't, your misinterpreting what I say due to the difference in our opinion. I said from the beginning there was problems I just believe it is exageratted and more along the line of 20% Good night and sweet dreams Anthony.

Just wait til Halo 3 comes out, then look at the hardware sales. Factor in a price cut as well and you have systems flying off shelves. Name one system seller for the PS3.........................................................................(cough, cough).......................................

I think Sony and Microsoft should stop ripping each other's limbs off and do something about that little goat Nintendo. The most bloodiest brawls right now are obviously between PS3 and 360, but anyone notice the Wii is harmlessly outselling them both and slowly crawling ahead of them? I mean great, ps3 outsold the 360 for once, but they still haven't reached nintendo's numbers yet. Maybe the two companies should sit down together with a few cups of coffee(though highly unlikely) and devise some plan to kick nintendo out of the gaming scene for good before they make a comeback. You never know if by 2012 when the next generation arrives Nintendo would've made so much money that they create a console far more powerful than either what sony and microsoft brings out next.

Sigil, let's face it. There are SEVERE hardware reliability issues with the 360. We can debate all the minutae all night long, but the fact remains. The word out is a 33% failure rate, it could be less-but I doubt much less. Still, there are severe hardware reliability issues with the 360. Good Night.

Sony took the market for granted and are paying dearly for that mistake but i have to give then benefit of the doubts, first off only in the first year of release and the cell is giving them much problem( still does not excuse them from having a crappy launch up line and poor 6 month games release), Bluray! now i love the bluray and i am enjoying it alot on 1080p tv ( quite a expensive setup if you ask me) in the long run i see it as the same old same old, but no offense to MS fanboys but the 360 is only doing well in the US of A, as for the Wii its gaining major $$ by selling a low cost Console( also keep in mind a lot of parent buy console as gift and having a ''new'' console being under 300$$ is really appealing)

To Anthony71B: It's not even legal to have a system failure rate of 33% because it is too defective a product for it to be legally released to my understanding. I have myself and 3 friends with one, only one broke so by my estimates it's 25%. What if mine broke though? It'd shoot up to 50%, you can't base these things on just a few consoles becuase that data is unreliable. And my point wasn't to clarify that I prefer the 360 but to argue the pro's of the 360. When I see comments like MS has no good game but Halo 3 (not from you) I counter it. Take what view you want but listening to others never hurt.

Well said, at the end, Sigil. People are too quick to think OMG ur opinin' don't mesh wit myne! ur the suxxorz! At any rate, this is plenty interesting.. never thought I'd see the PS3 over take the 360 in sales.. 'cept in like.. Japan, lol. As for MY friends.. my two closest buddies have been through three 360s each. So, a lot of 360 sales, or at least a good number, have been re-buys, I bet. Anyway, Nintendo's got the mojo to ride for a bit with sales booming on a very scarce amount of good games (most impressive, I say), Sony's slowly lumbering along, though waiting to get out its big name titles, while the 360 is slowly pushing out mediocre to good games in other genres besides FPS, all while still, as always, pushing out AAA FPS titles here and there.

in terms of console sales, nintendo is the undisputed winner. I doubt 360 and ps3 is ever gonna catch up with them, just like the useless struggle the psp is having with the ds. the thing is, how much staying power the consoles have. the wii appeals a lot to non-gamers, but how long are non-gamers willing to game? time will tell

And this is news why? Other than fanboys who gives a flying f*** about how many people bought something in Canada? How about some news about upcoming games, an interview with a developer, a hands-on demo video, anything, ANYTHING except flamebait for 360 and Ps3 fanboy, please, I'm asking ever so nicely.

Sigil, get what system you want. Me? I've been through 3 360's. My brother in law told me his friend Dale's crashed with the rings last week. My friend Jesse's buddy ,Steve ,got the ring last month (he had to swap the mobo). I'd say that with a 33% failure rate and something like 12 millions 360's out there...heh, there's no need to "overexaggerate." What's 33% of 12 million? But go ahead, I don't care what system you prefer.

To Franksould: No wonder it did bad on the PC, they released it a few years later when it had become outdated with scarce extra features and it doesn't matter how well it did on the PC cos it was already a success on the Xbox anyway so didn't need ground in the PC market. How about RPG then? Blue dragon, Lost oddyssey, Fable 2, eternal sonata and more I don't remember. Consoles rely on momentum to succeed, MS never gained momentum in japan and never knew how to. Nintendo has gathered great momentum and is riding it, even with scant new good games being released the console sells like nothing. Sony lost the momentum by making the PS3 too largely removed from the PS2 making fans (not hardcore ones) feel disconnected with it. This is opinion by the way and none of that screaming THATS JUST OPINION stuff cos we all know we have an opinion and it would do some of us good to listen to others.

i still don't understand why everyone thinks Halo 3 is going to suck...halo 1 was an amazing game at the time. people hate halo because they compare it to new console shooters that have evolved. halo 2 is atleast three years old now and it has fallen behind, yes, but tis why they are making a halo 3. halo 3 i believe, will catch up with all these "revolutionary" shooters, and surprise many with how good it is.

Leave it to Nintendo to rehash a game and add a new name. Wii Play? The only reason it actully did good was cause it came with a wii mote. There was a shortage of them when the Wii first launched. Now i dont know why it was doing so well in Canada though. Also, it was the summer gaming drought.
