NPD: July sees PS3 overtake 360 in Canada

Game-industry sales surge 62 percent north of the border, thanks to post-price-cut surge of Sony console; Wii, DS still dominate.

When game-industry research firm NPD releases US retail figures for the month of July, some analysts expect that they will show the PlayStation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 for the first time, thanks to a pre-E3 Media & Business Summit price drop. Regardless of how the numbers shake out in the US, NPD confirmed to GameSpot today that the PS3 outsold Microsoft's console north of the border.

The PS3 managed to move more than 15,000 systems in Canada for the month, overtaking the 13,000 Xbox 360s sold. However, both consoles were bested handily by Nintendo's Wii, which racked up more than 36,000 sales for the month. On the portable side of the market, the DS topped all non-PC platforms in July with almost 46,000 units sold, well ahead of the PlayStation Portable's 6,000 tally.

The industry as a whole was up more than 62 percent for the month, to C$84 million ($78.9 million) from the C$51.8 million ($48.7 million) it managed in July 2006. Portable hardware sales were up slightly, but console hardware revenues for the month more than tripled, leading to an overall 11 percent increase for systems, up to C$35.8 million ($33.6 million).

On the software side of the business, growth was significant, but not as explosive. Overall software sales were up more than 30 percent, to C$38.2 million ($35.9 million), led by a 43 percent increase in console software. Portable games only managed 8 percent growth for the month. Rounding out the industry picture, accessory sales were up more than 78 percent, to C$10 million ($9.4 million).

The best-selling games chart yielded a few surprises. Activision's Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s was the best-selling new release, but only managed to make it to the fourth spot. Nintendo's Wii Play (which comes packed with a spare Wii Remote) was the best-seller of the month, and the original PlayStation 2 Guitar Hero II topped its Encore by coming in second. A value pack of randomly assorted Xbox games came in third. The rest of the best-selling software titles are listed below.

Canada's top 10 best-selling games for July 2007:

1. Wii Play with Wii Remote--Wii
2. Guitar Hero II with guitar--PS2
3. Value Pack (included games vary)--Xbox
4. Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s--PS2
5. Pokémon Diamond--DS
6. Mario Party 8--Wii
7. Guitar Hero II with guitar--Xbox 360
8. Transformers: The Game--PS2
9. Pokémon Pearl--DS
10. New Super Mario Bros.--DS

Maybe Sony should do something like WiiPlay and make a game with a free controller. I mean it worked for nintendo.

foola12 Ya thats right! YOU BETTA RECOGNIZE THE Wii!!!------------- Uh, no we don't. I deny that it is a next gen system so it is NOT in competition with the PS3 and 360, both of which b*tch slap the Wii like a little child. So a bunch of old folks and non-traditional gamers bought their little system. Big deal. Woo hoo for Nintendo. Good for Sony and PS3. This will continue to happen as PS3 gets for and better games. In five years it will be Playstation and Sony on top again.

shadystxxx must be like 13 years old. There are more californians than canadians JUST SO YOU KNOW anyway go nintendo? i guess. I dont have a wii but i have a ds with only one game xbox probably isn't selling as well because lots of people already have it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Yeah im 13 just because i dont know theres more californians than canadians. I never once compared the population of canada with U.S.A, i was thinking in terms of land size against the size of great brittian, thats why i said in my post im sure small old great brittian sold more than that. Im sure people dont even read full comments they just assume something have litle brain power and post an insult.

WOW a 2,000 console difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That totally makes up for the bad launch, bad games, bad price, bad press, bad reviews. NOT!!!! The 360 has been outselling the PS3 for months and its been out for almost two years. Its about time the Ps3 has done something and its only 2,000 consoles. Plus its only for one month in one country. BIG DEAL!!!

"The PS3 wouldn't have outsold the 360 if there was never a pricedrop." That's the only reason I bought one...$500 is still pretty expensive but considering all you get for it I thought it was worth it (Plus I wanted the hardware backwards compatibility!!!). I wish I would have waited to buy the 360 though...having HDMI would have been pretty sweet...oh well....

Finally a headline Sony fanboys can be proud of and when you read the article it turns out to be 2000 more units sold on the heels of a price drop. Whoopie Freakin Deal......it's Canada!!! SO WHAT!!! Let's see what happens when this month's figures are released following a 360 price drop. I guess if I got bent over by Sony for 600 bucks I would slobber all over myself for any little positive headline I could find as well.

Games sales and hardware sales are quite a bit higher than that over here.

So when Something good happens to Sony, the MS fanboys come out of the blue bashing it. Give it up. It's not launch anymore, the PS3 is great, and will keep getting better. This is being fanboy, since I like the 360, this is simply fact. We'll wait and see how great the PS3 will do in 2008.

the reason why the PSP sold so little is because everyone is waiting for the PSP lite to be released. when it comes out watch the numbers rise to infinity

Ps3 fangirls really shouldnt be bragging about a once 2,000 units win for the month. If there price drop can only manage 2,000 more than full price 360 it's poor. I can see sony outselling 360 is the u.s by around 20,000 units but remember next months sales figures will include the 360 price drop and bioshock and then the month after halo 3 so i can see 360 taking the monthly winnings for the next 2 npd's. Im really pleased sony have finally beat 360 for once, hopefully devs will take note and make some great exclusive games or just on par or better mult-plat games.

lol Canada has a population of 31 million. Compare that with US 302 milion people. So it is a relatively smaller country than US. No wonder us Canadians have a slower gaming industry. Hopefully though, more people will buy consoles next month or so.

Sony have accomplished what they wanted with their price drop... sell console's before the holidays and faze out the old model for a new one the same price as the original with a little more room. The 360 just recently announced another price drop too so we will see how Sony's sales hold up. As far as it goes in North America... the 360 is killing the PS3 overall and I think the sales forcasted here are only because of that price drop for the PS3... I can't wait to see the figures for August and September.

The main reason for this is simply that everyone probably already has a 360. I went and got my ps3 when the price dropped, but I already had my 360.

It's a surge in sales due to a price cut, it's hardly like the console is becoming more popular becuase it's getting good games so I'm not too impressed. It is good to see the PS3 doing better in sales but on a price cut, that just proves it was too expensive from the start. Plus considering Halo 3 will increase sales of the 360 it's just a matter of time before there is a shift again. And you'd have to wait for the real figures, not an estimation, to judge this properly.

So what. The 360 has been out for almost two whole years it has nothing to prove. Plus the PS3 only outsold it by 2,000 consoles and thats all due to the pricecut.
