NPD: July sees PS3 overtake 360 in Canada

Game-industry sales surge 62 percent north of the border, thanks to post-price-cut surge of Sony console; Wii, DS still dominate.

When game-industry research firm NPD releases US retail figures for the month of July, some analysts expect that they will show the PlayStation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 for the first time, thanks to a pre-E3 Media & Business Summit price drop. Regardless of how the numbers shake out in the US, NPD confirmed to GameSpot today that the PS3 outsold Microsoft's console north of the border.

The PS3 managed to move more than 15,000 systems in Canada for the month, overtaking the 13,000 Xbox 360s sold. However, both consoles were bested handily by Nintendo's Wii, which racked up more than 36,000 sales for the month. On the portable side of the market, the DS topped all non-PC platforms in July with almost 46,000 units sold, well ahead of the PlayStation Portable's 6,000 tally.

The industry as a whole was up more than 62 percent for the month, to C$84 million ($78.9 million) from the C$51.8 million ($48.7 million) it managed in July 2006. Portable hardware sales were up slightly, but console hardware revenues for the month more than tripled, leading to an overall 11 percent increase for systems, up to C$35.8 million ($33.6 million).

On the software side of the business, growth was significant, but not as explosive. Overall software sales were up more than 30 percent, to C$38.2 million ($35.9 million), led by a 43 percent increase in console software. Portable games only managed 8 percent growth for the month. Rounding out the industry picture, accessory sales were up more than 78 percent, to C$10 million ($9.4 million).

The best-selling games chart yielded a few surprises. Activision's Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s was the best-selling new release, but only managed to make it to the fourth spot. Nintendo's Wii Play (which comes packed with a spare Wii Remote) was the best-seller of the month, and the original PlayStation 2 Guitar Hero II topped its Encore by coming in second. A value pack of randomly assorted Xbox games came in third. The rest of the best-selling software titles are listed below.

Canada's top 10 best-selling games for July 2007:

1. Wii Play with Wii Remote--Wii
2. Guitar Hero II with guitar--PS2
3. Value Pack (included games vary)--Xbox
4. Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s--PS2
5. Pokémon Diamond--DS
6. Mario Party 8--Wii
7. Guitar Hero II with guitar--Xbox 360
8. Transformers: The Game--PS2
9. Pokémon Pearl--DS
10. New Super Mario Bros.--DS

Wow do canadians not like fun. 15,000 ps3's 13,000 360's I thought canada was quite a big country, those numbers seem measley to me im sure small old great brittian sold more than 15,000 ps3's and 13,000 360's. And i think better wording of the article would have been better gamespot, something like ps3 outsells 360. As i doubt it has overtaken 360 sales because of one month selling 2,000 more units. Unless im wrong as gamespot have worded like this "The PS3 managed to move more than 15,000 systems in Canada for the month, overtaking the 13,000 Xbox 360s sold" Does that mean 360 have only ever sold 13,000 units in canada and ps3 have overtaken it, i doubt it but really brendan could have worded his article better.

Whoa, people, don't overreact. This only counts July and PS3 had it's price cut, but what happened in August? Thats right, 360 price cut. So August's figures will be more interesting.

I don't think Wii Play should even count as a game. It's basically the worst excuse to to disguise a gaming accessory as a game. So are they going to start counting all the PS3 combos in Australia that come with Motorstorm and Resistance as actually selling games?

Lot's of 360 hate here. Hate away people. I could care less. The fact stands though that right now the Wii/360 are the headrunners right now to win this console war and its up to Sony to catch up. Sony's online looks promising and by the end of this holiday season they should have a little more variety in their selection of games. LittleBigPlanet looks amazing.

And the appeal of the Wii and DS continues to allude me? I understand the Wii is cheap but the DS, why does that sell so well?

July was a pretty slow month for both consoles so it really coulda gone either way in terms of what company sold more units. However....with the release of Bioshock, Halo 3 and Mass Effect on the way for the 360....hm can't really tell who's going to sell more this year

Nintendo is outselling everyone everywhere. The PS3 wouldn't have outsold the 360 if there was never a pricedrop.

PS3 is now winning everywhere. LOL 360 sucks , the word is getting around that the 360 is faulty. a lot of parents are not buying that crap for their children anymore because its either they read the paper or hear it from another parent. 360 got some good games but its irrelevant because the hardware is garbage. its gonna be all over pretty soon. P.S. goodluck on all those lawsuits microsoft

People get so wound up in negative thinking that they can't even slow themselves down when something good happens. Yes, Sony has had several disapointments in recent years, but you know what? The price drop was a good move for them. So, congrats Sony... now you're only second best to the Wii 8) In other news, Canada owns.

The title states that PS3 overtook the 360 in july. But it didn't yet, only thing that has happened is that some analysts predicted that. The titles of these stories are way to misleading...

I like how they show the ps3 with 15000, and xbox360 with 13000. Then they just mention the wii with 46000. (lol)

At first I thought this was about TOTAL units sold, and then I realized it was just in the month of July. Makes sense, since all my gamer friends and family own either a 360, Wii and/or PS2.

Of course, it's only Canada. That is to say, it's only a country extremely close and similar to the USA in many ways, so perhaps these numbers are a reflection of what we'll see in the US, just on a smaller scale. We'll see where the fanboys are next week when the US numbers are announced.

At least 360 still has the US and Europe and is selling a lot more spite Canada's sales.

This doesn't faze me. 2000 sales advantage after the price drop seems underwhelming. The 360 price drop is $100 and was just recently in place. I see that storming the PS3's lead when in unison with BioShock.

Meh, I'm thinking of getting a PSP, but I'm really hoping PSN will increase the list of PS1 games that can be downloaded for play on the PSP and PS3. Anyhow, I thought Australia lacked gamers, but Canada seems worse off.
