PS3 gains on Wii in Japan

Consoles and handhelds fly off the shelves in island nation as the holiday season approaches.

Sales of hardware units were up across the board in Japan last week, according to figures released by Media Create.

Nintendo's DS Lite continued to remain on top, despite the PlayStation Portable's three-week surge following the release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and the new PSP Slim.

Unit sales were up across the board compared to the week before, with the DS Lite shifted 76,243 units on the week, with the PSP being its stiffest competition at 59,792 systems. The Wii sold 27,502 units, while the PlayStation 3 followed with 18,785--widening the gap from PlayStation 2 sales, which stood at 11,698. Xbox 360 figures were also up for the week, rising to 3,718.

In comparison, the week before saw the DS Lite selling 70,608 units, PSP 58,669, Wii 24,932, PS3 17,130, PS2 10,281, and Xbox 360 3,011.

I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY THE JAPANESE DON'T BUY XBOX360s that's because the Japanese aren't stupid like most American consumers. if a product has a 33% failure rate, they don't buy it. also they don't run out and buy Halo3 after seeing master chief on a can of mountain dew, LOL.

I already own a PS3 I feel sorry for those that have to get a scaled down version, the game I play most on my PS3 is GTA Vice City, cant do that with the new ones. I'd not buy one now, I have a Wii, 360, PS3, dvd player, surround sound, sky box, American dvd player, media center and a computer attached to my TV , I don't have any connections left for a PS2.

I read another article with the same data, but it claimed that the Wii was outselling the PS3 6-1 prior to the last couple of weeks, now it's 2-1. That would make more sense in context to the headline. Too bad the 360 hasn't caught on there yet. I think with the revised hardware they are definitely worth having a look at.

@ Hinu - Single digit frame timing for SSB? What are you saying, that players need to time their special moves exactly? well I should hope so. Just don't confuse that for the depth of the frame system of VF and Tekken, where players can work out what moves are punishable or launch punishable by referring to complex tables. People don't use Mario in tournaments? I never said they did, there are probably only a few compeditive characters because the game balance is half broken.

Man, I can't believe I'm arguing about this. Next Wii fans will tell me Mario Kart is a serious racer like DiRT, Gran Turismo, and FORZA or something.

@Grimbee - I never said these Nintendo games aren't fun, when I had a N64 I thought it had some of the best games ever released. I just think people should see these games for what they are, you know? There is nothing wrong with a casual focus and fun multiplayer. Peace out dudes!

"Ok Wii fans, you've convinced me. Super Smash Brothers is a serious fighter. So now where will I be able to get my special edition SSBB arcade stick, so I can pull off those tough mario combos?" Dont people play games for fun anymore? Im happy blasting through Metroid Prime 3 at the moment. Does it matter if I don't have a beefy PC and crysis? Not really, because at the moment I'm having a blast with Metroid Prime 3. Different choices of consoles, no matter how well they sell, will always serve people in different ways. I have quite a powerful PC, but I'm not playing ALL the new PC games, sometimes I al playing portal, sometimes I am playing Feeding Frenzy 2.. and then sometimes I go back and play the classics like Red Alert, and Transport Tycoon. If the Wii sells more, if the 360 sells more, if the ps3 sells more - all that really matters is which one YOU choose, and what games YOU play. Why would I want a next-gen console if I didn't like the games on it, why would you want a wii if all you want to play is nice-looking fps games (for example). Choice is good, it doesn't matter if one sells better than the other. What REALLY matters is if that console you chose has the financial backing and content to entertain YOU. If analysts, figures, and profits say that Halo 3 is the "winner", what does that matter? Im sitting here happily playing feeding frenzy 2 :D lol I hope you can see what I mean, sales figures don't count. The important thing is if the console you have chosen delivers on all the things that you want it to.

@ Nirvana: Wii outsold the PS3 by a factor of 2 to 1 in October, down from 3 to 1 a month prior. Meaning the gap is closing between the Wii and PS3 from 3 to 1 in September to 2 to 1 in October. << LINK REMOVED >> I think GameSpot should have stated the monthly sales instead, people are confused.

The 360 doesn't have a large fanbase in Japan.......sort of like trying to sell a Harley in Japan, when they can opt for Kawasakis (Just an example). Actually Japan loves Harleys and they are really popular there, when polled most japanese bike riders said a Harley was their dream bike.

The very fact that you even bothered to mention Mario while speaking of tournaments just proves that you have no idea what you're talking about. Nobody uses Mario at tournaments, and the fighting in Melee relies just as much on single-digit frames timing as any other 2D fighter.

The 360 doesn't have a large fanbase in Japan.......sort of like trying to sell a Harley in Japan, when they can opt for Kawasakis (Just an example). That's no surprise. The DS and Wii both gained momentum.....no surprise, especially with a large number of great titles due for release. And the PS3 going up in sales in Japan? Not a real surprise either, but it wasn't like it took a lead in sales or tripled in sales or anything......it sold an extra 1,000 or so systems. The most shocking thing was that the PS2 is still selling and at just as steady a rate as the PS3. That's the thing people have to look at.... those 11,000 or so PS2 buyers that DID NOT get persuaded into (for whatever reason/circumstances) buying a PS3.....had they been willing to go the extra way; then perhaps, this article would WOW me. Instead of making me wonder how the PS3 is gaining on the Wii. oh well.....

Roffle.. What, exactly, is PS3 gaining on? Basically this article is saying "Wii is still outselling PS3 at insane rates, just not as insane as before." The gap is still increasing between total consoles sold, PS3 isn't "gaining" on anything. But I guess any news is good news when you're that far behind.

People, please listen: The PS3 sold only 18,785 systems in Japan during that time period. Xbox 360 sold only 3,718 in Japan during that time period. So that means in Japan the PS3 sold 15,000 more systems than the Xbox 360 did. However, in North America and Europe, the number of systems sold was far greater than in Japan. In North America and Europe, the Xbox 360 outsold the Playstation 3 literally by hundreds of thousands of systems! Playstation 3's wordwide sales are a very distant third from Xbox 360 and Wii. Japan represents less than 15% of the market for home consoles at this point in time, and this Christmas is not a good one in Japan.

We all know that the PS3 is going to start picking up some momentum as the bigger games are released. It is sad to see the 360 struggling so much in the Western market though. The original xbox did fine without much Japanese support and I really don't get into a lot of the popular Japanese games. Card games, turn based RPGS, and pet games seem to be pretty big over there. If M$ continues to struggle over there, then in the next year or two we could see the PS3 and Wii push the 360 into last place in the worldwide market. Its as if the PS3 is struggling here and the 360 is struggling over there, but the PS3 is selling a lot more then 3,000 units a month here. So if that pace continues and we know the PS3 sales are going to launch forward with the big releases around the corner. I own a 360 and stand behind it all the way, but this is how I feel as far how the gaming market could be split up in the future. Maybe everybody can buy every console.

snakenamedjoe: "This article header is misleading. Wii still outsold PS3, meaning Wii is further ahead of PS3 than it was before. " True true. What is even more confusing is that the Wii widened its lead from these two weeks mentioned. The week before showed that the Wii sold 7802 more consoles than the PS3. The current week showed 8717 more consoles sold than PS3. How exactly is the PS3 gaining on the Wii?

tigerfan1993 "Why does Microsoft make 360s to be sold in Japan again?" MS is showing support for them, so they can in return with games. essentially just so the japanese developers support the machine for the other territories at this point. That region is basically taking one for the team.

Rob3nelson...you are crazy!!!! If Japan was out of step, then things like Naruto, Pokemon, even Nintendo itself would not be brought out to the US AFTER releases in Japan first. Unfortunately we americans end up biting off all the things they do first! They are innovative and we see their influences all over the US all the time. This will change when Super Mario Galaxy comes out this month. This game is Nintendo's flagship title and yes Xbox fanboys, BIGGER than HALO 3! I would not be surprised if the Wii will really fly off the shelves till the end of the year and why the Big N is confident enough to move the Super Smash Bros. Brawl next year.

I've heard some speculation that Devil May Cry 4 was already completed, but Capcom refuses to release it worrying in will sell better on the X360 than it will on the PS3, so they're waiting for a larger PS3 userbase first.

Well I guess facts don't apply to anything considering the false claim of ps3 catching up to systems is still being discussed. The PS3 does have a wicked line up next year so far however, MG4 and Final Fantasy XIII (if it comes out, remember how many times XII was delayed) will move systems). I don't think they will move as much as people think however. Remember, they were both 3-5 million sellers (worldwide that is, they're no Halo) with a 100 million ps2 installed base whereas the ps3's installed base is WAAAAAAY smaller. But no doubt they will be good system pushers. GTA4 will not be as big for them with the multi-platform release happening, I would put any amount of money that more games go to 360 owners. GT5 will be a good release but I don't really think that is a system seller. I have a Wii and barely play it, but trust me the dust is about to be blown off with Super Mario Galaxy and Nights 2. Thing with the Wii is that it has been selling great with no really good games, imagine what happens when Galaxy, Nights 2, Smash Bros., and Mario Kart are released (ironically all Nintendo games). I am really impressed with their success. The 360 in contrast to ridiculous rumors are starting to show their 2008 hand. And it is dangerous. People talk of Haze and other games for Ps3, I'll break the news to you, those games aren't selling systems. Splinter Cell will move some systems, remember the first and it's exclusive. When the marketing starts and people see the new direction, it will be a MUST HAVE title. Devil May Cry 4 has kept some of the PS3 sideliners on the shelf (I'm one of em, I'll get one when God of War 3 drops) and Ninja Gaiden 2 will undoubtedly do well and it is exculusive. Fable will do well as well, and Alan Wake (not a system seller) will be a great game. Let's not forget Lost Odyssey which looks like it will be pretty darn good. From the beginning Japan was a lost cause for the 360 because they really are nationalist. You can blame quality and all but they didn't buy the original Xbox either which did not have the same quality issues. Actually it was the ps2 with the issues. I don't know how the ps3 can close this gap with the wii and 360 it is turning into a two headed race. PS3 is too distant of a third, this is not like last generation when the gamecube and xbox were battling for second behind a distant ps2. The tables have now turned with microsoft and nintendo battling for first with a distant ps3. Ps3 only has 17% of the market right now. If you think the ps3 can catch up by 2008, it would take the 360 and Wii to just stop selling for a year. There's only so many price drops the ps3 can take. The 360 has room for drops, and the Wii could drop by next Christmas as well (even though they don't have to). As for EU, 360 is about to see a drop and new bundle, the sales will increase once again.

well, portables are the new in thing to get in Japan, if that wasn't obvious, they're smoking the consoles, even the PSP is outselling the PS3 & PS2 by a 2:1 ratio, the DS to the Wii by a 3:1 ratio, I thought this was obvious for months
