PS3 gains on Wii in Japan

Smash Bros. has been one of the most original and successful NEW fighters to come out in recent years. Shows how blatantly blinded and ignorant some fanboys are.

THE TITLE OF THE ARTICLE DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE. The Wii sold 27,052 and the ps3 18,785. Gamespot, let me do the math, 27,052>18,785 >__>

That is SO wrong! The Wii did 10.308% of upgrade when the ps3 did 9.661%, so the wii is still selling more, faster and expodentialy. Silly Gamespot!

How is the PS3 "gaining" on the Wii? This past week the Wii sold 8,717 more consoles than the PS3. The prior week 7,802 more Wiis were sold than PS3s. The title of this article doesn't make sense. As far as the portables goes...The console limit is pretty much one (per system) per household. The handheld limit is one (per system) per PERSON.

dragonseer439, what makes Smash not a serious fighter? Lack of blood? Some cartoonish characters? That game is brilliant because it only looks simple on the surface, but has nearly as much technique and skill involved as Tekken or Soul Calibur (maybe not Virtua Fighter though). To me, character designs don't mark the seriousness of a fighting game, the actual depth of the fighting does. And on that end, the Smash series has always been up there with the best.

I'm surprised that both the Wii and PS3 are being outsold by portables. Seems kind of strange to me.

More news more hate. Here are the facts. Wii is still the leader in over-all World Wide sales. Wii's install base in Japan is still LARGER and increasing over the Ps3 and 360 with every system sold. @ Col_Swamp I seriously doubt that you've played anything on the Wii vs. Wii Sports or just the "top flight" tier titles. If so the opinionated statements that you are trying to push on as gospel would probably be sung to a different tune. Or still be a part of the same hate symphony. Regardless if you're going to tell me that you played through games like Sonic ATSR, SSX BLUR, Madden, NBA, Zak & Wikki, Godfather, Dragon Ball Z, and on and on. And you're having the same exact experience with them as you would on any other system.?Regardless if you "like" the way they play or not. Then I'd have to call B.S. and fanboyism. The Wii is offering up a new fresh way to enjoy yourself. And it's revolutionary in the sense that people outside of the sterotypical "core/hardcore" gamers can pick up the controller and be in the same boat as those demographic gamers playing the same exact game for the first time. It's a whole new experience.

Xbox 360 is going up... slowly but surely... congrats to Sony!

@ HiNu - No, Super Smash Bros isn't a serious fighter, if you want to know what a serious fighter for the Wii or Gamecube is get Soul Calibur 2 or Capcom Vs Snk 2. I didn't say it wasn't fun, or it wasn't a good multiplayer game, but getting all hardcore with it is a bit funny. @ kejigoto and dualmask - good responses, but see Col_Swamp's reply below for another view.

@ Col_Swamp Yeah, since everyone you know is bored with their Wii, that must mean the whole world is like that. Funny thing, the exact opposite is true on my end; all my Wii-owning friends, even a couple that own 360s and PS3s, play the Wii constantly day after day, Wii games, GC games and VC games. But that's irrelevant. Because neither you or I speak for the masses. Everyone is different and just because everyone in your circle has an opinion doesn't make it fact. Personally, I believe developing a new, innovative way to interface with games is far more impressive than making textures look sharper and more realistic. Type all the walls of text you want, but the Wii's ridiculously phenomenal sales and high praise from critics, and its owners, all over the world tell the story so I don't need to. That doesn't mean you have to agree, simply acknowledge.

One thing that is often forgotten is that gameplay is not only about controls, it is also about AI, physics, stabilized online play, number of opponents on screen, number of particles on screen... Yeah, Nintendo does allow 'online' play, but it will never be a match for X-Box live. Please, don't fall into Nintendo's marketting plans telling you that next gen is about gameplay, not graphics, because they forgot a big part of the equation. More power doesn't only mean better graphics, it also means better AI, more opponents, destructible environments, real-life physics and such other things that all have a direct impact on gameplay.

man gamespot can't portray the news properly, if it's causing this much confusion they should really update it... ok so EVERYONE can understand, a couple months ago the wii was outselling the ps3 by 5 to 1... now the reason for the article ... the whole ps3 gaining this, is because now it's only outselling it by about 2 to 1, nuff said

What's all this talk about Wiis gathering dust, anyway? There are plenty of great games on all three systems. Anyone who finds him or herself bored with any of the systems either spends too much time on video games to have already played all that system's good games, or is simply picky.

I think Smash Brothers is a far better fighter then most others.. For one the Stages are amazing as well as the Physics and you know what? I dont haveto to play with a 7foot tall 394lbs guy.. It's absurd to call Smash a bad fighter.

Hmm, looks like they really have money to spend on consoles there since the reason while PS3 have gone slower here in Europe etc is because the very high price which limits it to the above average people with gaming interests. I actually though Wii would pick up more with Super Mario Galaxy. What's going on?

And people always say that gamespot has bias against the PS3! "PS3 gains on the Wii"? Wii sales increased 10.3%. PS3 sales increased 9.6% How is that gaining on the Wii? The Wii had more total sales and had a larger percentage increase in sales. Thats more like the Wii widening its gap.

I was mostly agreeing with you until this point - My Wii has indeed been collecting dust and my friends and I have mainly been using it for Melee only. But to say that Metroid Prime 3's control system is a "quick gimmick" just shows that you have no idea what you're talking about.

The PS3 didn't get advantage over Wii. It was the PSP.

@Dualmask wow, r u kidding me. while I can agree that games can show their technological advances and contributions to the gaming world by other means than graphics, to say that the Wii has taken larger strives than other games have done in decades is just silly. With the exception of Wii Sports and the superior aiming ability in RE4 the only thing that the devs for Wii games (mostly nintendo) have done is find some quick gimmick to incorporate their controller (Metroid anyone?) into the mix. I honestly can't think of a single person that I know who owns a Wii and plays it often. Most others have moved onto their 360, PS3, or PC in order to get their gaming fix. Unfortunately the story is always the same; people buy the Wii and play it like crazy, then get bored and move onto something else. Until Nintendo garners more 3rd party support and tones down the rehashing of the same old franchises it is going to limit the amount of "advancement" as you call it, that their system and games can achieve. I enjoy the Wii and the only thing that sells me on Nintendo's new machine is the virtual console. That alone is worth sinking the money into the Wii IMO. I would hate to see the Wii go down in flames in a couple years and die before it's time like the GameCube (one of the most underrated systems next to the Dreamcast IMO). But the Wii games haven't advanced the gaming industry any more than Canadians who thought that putting mayonnaise on french fries was a good idea.

I never said "raw power" wins console wars, and I never claimed for there to BE a console war. It's childish man. They are PRODUCTS. Quit being so anti-PS3, it's just a product.

@ dragonseer439 No I see the big picture and I know the Wii lacks in the graphics department. Do I wish that Nintendo pushed the graphics side abit more? Of course, but Nintendo isn't about having the most beautiful game out there, or pushing the industry on the graphics side of things. They are about changing the way people view video games and how we play them. Just look what the Wii has done so far for gaming and how much its stirred things up. I'll admit when I first saw the Wii and what they were doing I had my doubts, I was really thinking that things might be over. Then I got my hands on it, gave it a shot and I was blown away. Yes the good graphics are nice, and some of the games out there look amazing, but in terms of gameplay they just don't compare to the experience I'm getting with the Wii and its only getting better and better. I know in the long run the Wii can't hang with the PS3 and 360, but I'm sure in the next few years Nintendo will show off an even stronger Wii that will have the ability to compete with the 360 and PS3 with ease, and cost alot less. As of right now Nintendo is dominating the market and every time it looks like the PS3 might climb out of the hole it blundered into something else comes along and knocks them further into it. Innovation is what is driving the market right now, and its apparent gamers are tired of the same thing. Just look at some of the games coming out recently and how they are changing things. Portal alone was an amazing game that completely changed how I look at puzzle games, it blew me away some of the things I was doing and every one of my friends were left in awe when they saw me playing it. Kane and Lynch is going to push Co-Op play to a whole new level and is showing off some pretty impressive multiplayer which has never really been seen before. Spore is another title that is really changing the way things work, and if you don't know what I mean just go look at some videos of it and see just what all it has to offer. Other games that continue to do the same thing over and over again are getting old and tired. You can tell by scores they receive during reviews, and in general terms of gameplay the PS3 isn't something that really welcomes change. Its built on raw power and not a whole lot else. Its hard to develop games for and you can see plenty of games getting pushed back further and further. How can you expect a console to do well when the PC and 360 are getting a game a month or so before it does? Why spend that extra money for the PS3 when you can get most games ahead of time on either of those? Sure there are a few exclusives out there remaining on it, but nothing that really grabs me, that says I need this game and I have to play it. Nintendo on the other hand is constantly making me look at a game and go "I can't wait to try that out" and getting me excited over things beyond "Wow that game looks amazing!". Yes in the big scheme of things the PS3 will outlast the Wii for sure, I won't argue that at all. But while the Wii is here, its going to dominate the market and continue to change and reshape things, bringing in new ideas and different ways that we can play a game. Things are only going to get better here and I'm sure Nintendo is already cooking up their next big thing. This generation is about change, and if a company refuses to change and try new things, its not going to succeed in today's world. Sony is finding this out the hard way and having to take back things they said and rethink their whole gameplan for the PS3. Just wait and see, about mid 208 we'll have a better idea of how things will play out. Until then all we can do is sit and wait for the big games to come rolling out.

@dragonseer439 Some Wii games may LOOK dated, but the gameplay on many Wii games is more advanced than gaming has been in decades. Graphics capabilities aren't the only way that gaming can move forward.

Whoa whoa whoa! Just cause the PS3 sold better this week doesn't mean its gaining on the Wii. Wii still sold more and HAS sold more since launch which means if you take the 24,932 Wiis sold and subtract the 17,130 PS3s sold Sony actually fell 7,802 consoles further behind. I'm not a Nintendo fanboy. I do owns a Wii and a 360, but I won't own a PS3 cause Sony botched this so bad and there just aren't any games worth mentioning for the PS3. Like others have said, just wait till WiiFit hits. That will be interesting to see.

@kejigoto - You seem to be pretty sure of yourself, but you're missing the big picture here. The PS3 is the latest console to come out and has the biggest potential of the three consoles going into the future. Games like Final Fantasy XIII and MGS4 will really push the video game industry forward, whereas Wii games already look dated now, and will look really bad four years from now. Sony consoles are designed to deliver over a long span of time, just look at the PS2, going strong after seven years. My point is that no matter what the sales look like in 'may or june 2008', that isn't going to mean too much. Think about a game like God of War, and how that blew people away years after the PS2 came out. Do you get it now?

Wii owners play Super mario galaxy, Dragon ball z, medal of honor: heroes 2, Fire emblem radiant down and soul calibur legends. I think i'm missing some but I still beats the 360 and ps3 by a long shot.
