Switch vs. Wii U: All the Zelda: Breath of the Wild Differences

Resolution is among the areas that differentiate the two versions.

We've known for some time that the Wii U and Switch versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild would essentially be the same game. Some changes do exist, however, and now we know what they are.

According to the list, which was provided to GameSpot by Nintendo, both versions "offer the same content" and have a framerate of 30 FPS. The Special edition and Master edition are both Switch exclusives, while the disc-based Wii U version requires a 3 GB installation, as recently reported.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Switch/Wii U Differences

Breath of the Wild renders at 900p on Switch when connected to a TV, while the Wii U version runs at 720p. It's not explicitly stated, but the Switch version presumably runs at 720p when it's not connected to a TV, as that's the integrated screen's maximum resolution.

Additionally, the Switch version has "higher-quality environmental sounds. As a result, the sound of steps, water, grass, etc. are more realistic and enhance the game's open-air feel."

This is presumably a comprehensive list, as it bothers to note the obvious fact that some icons and on-screen buttons may be different between the two versions.

Of course, how well each version maintains its framerate is one area that could still be a point of differentiation, but that isn't something we'll know for sure until we have the final code for each in our hands. You can see our impressions of the Switch version Nintendo demoed last week in the video above.

  • Both launch on the same day, March 3.
  • Both have a frame rate of 30 FPS.
  • Both versions of the game offer the same content.
  • On a TV, the Nintendo Switch version of the game renders in 900p while the Wii U version renders in 720p.
  • The Nintendo Switch version has higher-quality environmental sounds. As a result, the sound of steps, water, grass, etc. are more realistic and enhance the game's open-air feel.
  • The physical copy of the Wii U version will require 3 GB of available memory on the Wii U system or an external drive.
  • Some icons, such as on-screen buttons, differ between the two versions.
  • A Special Edition and Master Edition of the Wii U version are not available.

@YearoftheSnake5: To be fair...the Xbonx and PS4 didn't either.

Hell, the brand new PS4 can't do 1080p 60FPS either since Sony's policy is, was, and will likely continue to be "Eh, make the developers fix that crap."

@mickpunx: That was my entire point. When they came out years ago, they couldn't consistently hit 1080p on anything that wasn't a remaster.

I know that doesn't excuse the Switch, but people seem to want to downplay the switch against other consoles *that also do the thing they decry the Switch for*.

@Dragon_Nexus: I see your point, but mine was that, these consoles are years old, so the technology that Nintendo are pushing into the switch shouldn't be sitting behind or even alongside outdated tech. They should have beefed it up a bit more In my opinion to avoid this kind of controversy

@mickpunx: Ah, I get where you're coming from.

Thing is, that goes against Nintendo's general business strategy of who they like to appeal to. They don't want to make a hugely expensive machine that only a few can buy, they want to make something affordable that everyone can get into.

Granted they're shooting themselves in the foot with their horrendous peripheral prices, but that's another matter.

I like having a Nintendo console as a secondary machine. They've not been a good choice for a primary machine since the SNES era, I've found. But when I'm bored of my PC I can play my Wii U and have a darn ole good time.

I imagine the Switch will be the same. If they can consistently bring out nice looking games at 60FPS, I'll be happy enough with that. Heck, I'm likely to get one just for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 alone.

Was able to get $250 for my WiiU and another $30 for Windwaker. Just preorded my switch and my copy of Zelda and only spent and extra $30 dollars to pay off the whole console. Pretty excited for this game and it is always fun getting a new console. I am really impressed with the physics in this game.... chopping down a tree and watching fall into the river then float down stream and get wedged to create a path, pushing bolder down hills, breakable weapons, etc

There's a better reason than all those I've seen offered for choosing the Wii-U version over the Switch. This game (content and story-wise) has been essentially complete for over a year. It was supposed to drop Christmas 2015 but they held back so they could update graphics and have it as a launch title for the new console. I refuse to let their cheap tactic work on me. I'm not buying a brand new $300+ console for a game they delayed just so I would buy the console. It was originally made for the Wii-U and should have launched on the Wii-U. Anther Zelda should have been developed for the Switch.

Really want to play this game, I haven't played a Zelda game since Ocarina of Time simply b/c since the N64 Nintendo hasn't produced a console worth owning. If the Switch was $150 I might be inclined to get it just to play Zelda but I'm not spending $300 + the cost of the game, that's a bit too steep. Would be an easier sell if I could get any other use out of the Switch but Nintendo has zero other titles I'm even remotely interested in and their "console" is too sub-par for any decent game to even be developed on for the most part.

I'm still hoping for the day Nintendo goes belly up and does like sega did and just puts their software on the "major" consoles. I seriously think they'd make more money, Zelda could sell so many more copies if it wasn't limited to their crappy platform.

@yoda101280: Honestly, I'm not remotely interested in playing this new Zelda game, mainly because it just looks so low quality to me. When you've played games like Uncharted 4 and more recently Battlefield 1, you realise just how crap looking the new Zelda game is. It's at that point that I appreciate the raw power and quality of games my PS4 offers me.

But yeah, I agree that Nintendo should throw in the towell because Sony and Microsoft have pretty much buried them as far as next gen consoles are concerned.

I'm don't have any particular allegiance to console brands. I just look at value for money and go with the tech and software that gives me best bang for buck and just looking at the specs in 2017 for this thing, it looks a bit rubbish. To me, it just looks woefully under-powered for anything trying to push large quantities of quality graphics and game data around. You can easily tell that this new Zelda game is about as far as you're going to go visually with the unit, that being, low quality resolutions and simple graphics. This seems to be a staple for anything related to Nintendo visuals these days and I'll never expect the company to push visual fidelity forwards in any way.

I mean, i want to play this game, but there is no way I'm spending nearly $400 CDN on this under powered console to play under 1080p. It's too expensive for what it is. A gimped tablet, and a gimped home console together packaged in one pretty box.

I can't believe I grew up playing only Nintendo games and thought of these guys as my heroes. This sh*t is now becoming too irritating. A game that can't even hit 1080p at 60fps with that kind of an art style suggests this is a huge flop show waiting to happen. I never liked Zelda games but unless you are mega fanboy/girl, there is simply no reason to get the Switch system or its version of the game. The Wii U is still pretty decent as a console and if only Nintendo doesn't plan on totally abandoning its user base, the Switch has no reason to be sold.

@starjay009: Don't worry, you won'tever be able to play 60FPS (even at 1080P) on MS or Sony's consoles anyway.

I'm a little baffled by the lack of pixels/FPS as well and idk why I was already convinced it would be 1080/60fps, but my only concern really is that more & more people are getting 4K TV's now that they're becoming more affordable, but the only downside is when you have to upscale anything less than 1080p at least...it's gonna be noticeable.

A console release in 2017 that can't even hit 1080 on first party games is pretty much a disaster,

@xxdavidxcx87: A portable console, though.

As I've said before... my PS4 is mostly attached to 720p 32" TV. Since I don't have problem with that, I'm OK with portable not hitting 1080p.

Might get me one for my birthday. See what are those worshiped Nintendo franchises all about.

Im not even one of those "60fps 1080P" people but 30fps 720P is ridiculous in 2017 for a AAA flagship game with this kind of artsyle and to think some people will be buying a new console for 900p is insane as well

@naruto945: You are disconnected from reality. People enjoyed playing Nintendo games many years before 720p resolutions, why do you think they won't enjoy it now on the Switch, resolution and frame rate has nothing to do with it. Marketing really influence how you feel and think and you might start not enjoying things unless they stand with what you have persuaded to believe that is the bare minimum for enjoying games. You might as well not enjoy PS4 because in 10 years time PS4 would look ridiculous in terms of resolution and frame rate.

It's all about enjoying the present moment. If people love playing Nintendo games and feel happy and satisfied with them, the Switch is an AMAZING console, no matter what you are going to throw at it.

@killerious: It's a matter of value, they're charging the same price as PS4 and Xbone now but with far inferior tech. Do you know how old 720p is? We're moving toward 4k becoming the standard in the next few years and they're putting out a "console" that's not even native 1080p, not to mention it can't even run 60 frames at that dated fidelity. Given all that they still want you to pay top dollar for their console.

I agree with you about the frames and resolutions, if a game is really good it's not that huge of a deal, if the game plays smooth and I like the art style I don't really care if it's only running at 30 frames and 900p. I do however care that they want people to spend the same amount of money for a lesser product. Would you sell your top of the line mercedes for the same price as your top of the line Honda Civic?

@yoda101280: If this "Civic" can do, say, off-road and I want off-road? Maybe.

In case of consoles, we are talking indoor vs portable. Essentially, Switch is portable. Sure it can be docked and connected to TV, but so could Vita be connected to TV; portable is still portable.

I'll be visiting my family overseas later this year. That's a month away from my PC/PS4. Switch/Zelda combo looks interesting. Just can't live on smartphone games. Back in the days, I was carrying PSP around. Enjoyed two God of War games, MGS, Motor Storm... some other titles while away from home. Probably not worth investing into console just for travels, but we live only once.

There is a big difference in visuals between the wiiu version and the switch version if any of the comparison videos on the internet are accurate. I wish this was not the case because i have a WiiU and dont want to upgrade to a new system because i bought the WiiU for this zelda game before the switch was announced. Now the pre orders are all gone and I am just looking at these damn videos thinking how could anyone think they look similar.

Even if they were identical I'd still buy the Switch version, but it's a no brainer since the Switch version is enhanced.

Cool that the audio's better too...didn't know that.

Possibly that means Switch has more RAM? I don't think we know yet... 1GB wouldn't be terrible (or the same 2GB, 1GB reserved for the OS like Wii U) but maybe it has more, or lets games use more?

F*cking hell!

With that said. Game looks good, but that quack head trying to interrupt the lady needs to learn to speak less and listen more.
