Switch vs. Wii U: All the Zelda: Breath of the Wild Differences

Resolution is among the areas that differentiate the two versions.

We've known for some time that the Wii U and Switch versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild would essentially be the same game. Some changes do exist, however, and now we know what they are.

According to the list, which was provided to GameSpot by Nintendo, both versions "offer the same content" and have a framerate of 30 FPS. The Special edition and Master edition are both Switch exclusives, while the disc-based Wii U version requires a 3 GB installation, as recently reported.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Switch/Wii U Differences

Breath of the Wild renders at 900p on Switch when connected to a TV, while the Wii U version runs at 720p. It's not explicitly stated, but the Switch version presumably runs at 720p when it's not connected to a TV, as that's the integrated screen's maximum resolution.

Additionally, the Switch version has "higher-quality environmental sounds. As a result, the sound of steps, water, grass, etc. are more realistic and enhance the game's open-air feel."

This is presumably a comprehensive list, as it bothers to note the obvious fact that some icons and on-screen buttons may be different between the two versions.

Of course, how well each version maintains its framerate is one area that could still be a point of differentiation, but that isn't something we'll know for sure until we have the final code for each in our hands. You can see our impressions of the Switch version Nintendo demoed last week in the video above.

  • Both launch on the same day, March 3.
  • Both have a frame rate of 30 FPS.
  • Both versions of the game offer the same content.
  • On a TV, the Nintendo Switch version of the game renders in 900p while the Wii U version renders in 720p.
  • The Nintendo Switch version has higher-quality environmental sounds. As a result, the sound of steps, water, grass, etc. are more realistic and enhance the game's open-air feel.
  • The physical copy of the Wii U version will require 3 GB of available memory on the Wii U system or an external drive.
  • Some icons, such as on-screen buttons, differ between the two versions.
  • A Special Edition and Master Edition of the Wii U version are not available.

I'm going to wait for the switch on this one, but that's just because I feel like it will make the new console more exciting.

A new Zelda game on a new console.

@Richardthe3rd: They arrive on the same day. So the wait is the same regardless.

My opinion...get it for the WiiU if you own one as there arent any reasons to shell another $300 just for this game...the differences seem to be minimal.

@sladakrobot: I sold my Wiiu over a year ago. As history repeats itself, this time around I won't make the same mistake and re-re-re purchase the very same crap Nintendo console I got rid off simply because, finally, a decent game is being released.

Nonetheless, I hope you do enjoy the game.

Good. I don't need to get a Switch just yet. Rather wait for when Mario Odyssey is released.

@el_marto2003: maybe it's just me but the new Mario game doesn't look interesting at all, running around in a city jumping to higher ledges and whatnot, granted this is only what I saw in the ads so maybe they just didn't show the super cool parts where it actually looks like a fun new Mario

@el_marto2003: I think it's what most people are going to do. And at this point in time, if the Switch has received a negative opinion from the public and it only has 2 games(Zelda and Mario), even then a lot of people will still hesitate to purchase it.

The comparison video I saw showed brighter colors and a less washed out appearance compared to the Wii-U version.

@titang1: those comparisons might have been from a wii u presentation half-year ago and a switch presentation done not too long ago. if it is the same comparison video i'm thinking of.

If this one.. then it as I said before. If it is another, then I don't know when they were captured.

@nazart81: yeah welcome to 2017 and how video games work, and also I believe that Zelda game will take up almost half of the storage on the Switch. Don't lose that cartridge now ya hear :)

@kdogpa: Why would it take up storage? You mean if you download it? Yeah I don't understand how they want us to download the bigger games. I guess the Eshop will be mostly (or only) for smaller games like Snipperclips and traditional handheld games.

@nazart81: At least? The bigger the better! Bigger game size = better quality textures, uncompressed audio and video, larger game, more in game assets and more!

@xolivierx: Well, for physical games Switch should be that way. That's the huge advantage of Cartridges.
