Switch vs. Wii U: All the Zelda: Breath of the Wild Differences

Resolution is among the areas that differentiate the two versions.

We've known for some time that the Wii U and Switch versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild would essentially be the same game. Some changes do exist, however, and now we know what they are.

According to the list, which was provided to GameSpot by Nintendo, both versions "offer the same content" and have a framerate of 30 FPS. The Special edition and Master edition are both Switch exclusives, while the disc-based Wii U version requires a 3 GB installation, as recently reported.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Switch/Wii U Differences

Breath of the Wild renders at 900p on Switch when connected to a TV, while the Wii U version runs at 720p. It's not explicitly stated, but the Switch version presumably runs at 720p when it's not connected to a TV, as that's the integrated screen's maximum resolution.

Additionally, the Switch version has "higher-quality environmental sounds. As a result, the sound of steps, water, grass, etc. are more realistic and enhance the game's open-air feel."

This is presumably a comprehensive list, as it bothers to note the obvious fact that some icons and on-screen buttons may be different between the two versions.

Of course, how well each version maintains its framerate is one area that could still be a point of differentiation, but that isn't something we'll know for sure until we have the final code for each in our hands. You can see our impressions of the Switch version Nintendo demoed last week in the video above.

  • Both launch on the same day, March 3.
  • Both have a frame rate of 30 FPS.
  • Both versions of the game offer the same content.
  • On a TV, the Nintendo Switch version of the game renders in 900p while the Wii U version renders in 720p.
  • The Nintendo Switch version has higher-quality environmental sounds. As a result, the sound of steps, water, grass, etc. are more realistic and enhance the game's open-air feel.
  • The physical copy of the Wii U version will require 3 GB of available memory on the Wii U system or an external drive.
  • Some icons, such as on-screen buttons, differ between the two versions.
  • A Special Edition and Master Edition of the Wii U version are not available.

Kind of bullshit that any game coming out now still only renders at 720p. Pointless to upgrade to the Switch if you're not getting 1080p.

@neo-rtsd: Kind of bullshit that people are complaining about resolution and not about graphical fidelity. Resolution doesn't matter if the game looks great like this one does, no one was complaining when games were bloody 386p and aliasing was flying out your ears because they looked great and they were great and whining gets you bloody nowhere.

@atopp399: If you're not the target audience then yeah. This is for kids, it's Zelda, it's always been for kids - kids don't even know how to spell aliasing. You can argue that oo **** shit tits 23 year olds play Zelda but gerroff it's for kids.

@theuncannyone: Native resolution does indeed affect the way something looks. If you're running a game in anything other than your native resolution for your tv/monitor, you will notice a difference, that's just a fact. And I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about here. Nobody was complaining when games weren't as advanced? That's because they were appropriately advanced for their time period. What I'm talking about is that in this day and age a brand new game on a brand new system should be running at 1080p, especially with the stylized graphics. It's really not asking too much, don't pretend that it is.

@neo-rtsd: You mean you'll notice a difference, I won't since the max resolution I've played games at for the past 7 years is 720p. I wasn't pretending that it was asking too much either, I was just saying **** off with your exaggerated whiney shite and complain about the Aleppo bombings or something that actually matters.

@theuncannyone: Hahaha come on man...Come on man! Nobody is whining, just making observations. Your little interjections are just as "whiny" as anything else. And I'm not sure what your limited experience should have to mean for the majority of people because it's just your limited experience. Why don't you go complain about Aleppo?

@neo-rtsd: You can't even spell the name of the Arabic holy book correctly. It's Koran, Qur'an, or Quaran. Not "Kurran". And since you haven't said you're not an American, I'll say again: American dog - introduce yourself to a river.

@neo-rtsd:

And for cartoon, cell shaded graphics too.

Granted, the game still looks amazing with the art style they've gone with. But it's mind-boggling that even now the Nintendo hardware can't manage 1080P on it's freaking flagship launch title.

@fig56: Special Edition, Master Edition...lol only a fool wastes money on those.

Better environmental SOUNDS? Wow, the Switch is such a system seller!

It's laughable how deep you have to scrape the barrel for your defenses lately. No one is fooled.

@aross2004: Overpriced Nvidia Shield TV with no longevity in sight. Bloody outrageous pricing that properly upset me, I was gonna buy 90 (hyperbole) if it cost under £229 but god Nintendo has Nintenfucked it up again.
