Switch vs. Wii U: All the Zelda: Breath of the Wild Differences

Resolution is among the areas that differentiate the two versions.

We've known for some time that the Wii U and Switch versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild would essentially be the same game. Some changes do exist, however, and now we know what they are.

According to the list, which was provided to GameSpot by Nintendo, both versions "offer the same content" and have a framerate of 30 FPS. The Special edition and Master edition are both Switch exclusives, while the disc-based Wii U version requires a 3 GB installation, as recently reported.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Switch/Wii U Differences

Breath of the Wild renders at 900p on Switch when connected to a TV, while the Wii U version runs at 720p. It's not explicitly stated, but the Switch version presumably runs at 720p when it's not connected to a TV, as that's the integrated screen's maximum resolution.

Additionally, the Switch version has "higher-quality environmental sounds. As a result, the sound of steps, water, grass, etc. are more realistic and enhance the game's open-air feel."

This is presumably a comprehensive list, as it bothers to note the obvious fact that some icons and on-screen buttons may be different between the two versions.

Of course, how well each version maintains its framerate is one area that could still be a point of differentiation, but that isn't something we'll know for sure until we have the final code for each in our hands. You can see our impressions of the Switch version Nintendo demoed last week in the video above.

  • Both launch on the same day, March 3.
  • Both have a frame rate of 30 FPS.
  • Both versions of the game offer the same content.
  • On a TV, the Nintendo Switch version of the game renders in 900p while the Wii U version renders in 720p.
  • The Nintendo Switch version has higher-quality environmental sounds. As a result, the sound of steps, water, grass, etc. are more realistic and enhance the game's open-air feel.
  • The physical copy of the Wii U version will require 3 GB of available memory on the Wii U system or an external drive.
  • Some icons, such as on-screen buttons, differ between the two versions.
  • A Special Edition and Master Edition of the Wii U version are not available.

Wasn't twilight princess the better version on the gamecube as opposed to the wii?
I'm not saying it'll be the same here but I can't see there being much of a difference at all.

@Foxhound71: The Gamecube version was better, but only because it didn't use horrible so-called "motion" controls (plus randomly flip the entire world around to make Link right-handed).

In this case there's no (known) downside to the Switch version. You're getting a portable version, AND both the graphics and audio are enhanced.

Possibly the framerate will be better too-Digital Foundry noted the Switch version was rock solid both when plugged in (at a higher resolution) and unplugged (at 720p) while the Wii U version dipped in framerate...though noted that it may have been an older build and possibly the Wii U one will run fine too.

@Foxhound71: The Wii version was superior to the GameCube one, imo. The HD version on the WiiU is the definitive one, though.

@Foxhound71: It was definitive in the sense that it didn't force you to play in mirror mode for the whole game. But Wii version supported anamorphic widescreen, which I think tipped it in its favor.

@tenfour04: That's cool, but totally negated by forcing you to use "motion" controls. I never finished the game until this year, on Wii U because of that.

@wolfpup7: The motion controls are what made it so revolutionary.

@SythisTaru: So-called "motion" controls don't work, and broke a game that was otherwise pretty great. You can call them "revolutionary" but regardless they were terrible.

@inkman66: So what? If you like Zelda to being with, you'll need a Switch sooner or later anyway, so why not buy the better version of the game that's also portable?

@wolfpup7: Cough WiiU Cough. Not a single exclusive Zelda

Even MS/Sony are too unstable to rely on now with the way they went left and right during release and now the upgraded versions. I could easily believe that next year someone pulls the trigger again to gain advantage, only causing another earthquake.

@inkman66: Gaming is an expensive hobby. I find it funny when people complain about the price. If it really bothers you 1)Wait for black friday deals or 2)stick with older consoles and buy games on sale.

@Bread_or_Decide My point exactly. The whole article is about Wii U vs. Switch. With Zelda being the only great game out for the next several months is it worth the $300 IF you have a Wii U? I do and think no. I can play it on the Wii U and pick up a used Switch or a cheaper bundle come holiday season for a bunch less.

@inkman66: To me then I'd rather just buy the Switch version and wait to play it later.

I don't have any great faith that Switch will be available this fall, nor cheaper, but who knows.

@inkman66: That's the most sensible comment I read yet. I'm holding onto my Wii U anyway for the games that I have that will not play on this. I'll get the Switch down the line when it is discounted for Mario and whatever else I might want. However, I don't expect much. Already played Mario Kart 8.

@kickrockser true. I have owned every Nintendo system since the NES. The last 4 systems first day. If the Switch had the kind of launch line up people were talking about it needing to be a success......I would pre order. But it doesnt so I will save mega $$$ a few months from now and have more games to play. I have been holding off on a PS4 thinking I was going to get a Switch. The day after seeing the Switch presentation, I bought a PS4 on Craigslist with two controllers, COD Infinite Warfare and Uncharted 4 for only $190.

@inkman66: 30$, 300$, 300000000000000000000000$, it does not matter, the Switch is better. Even if the Wii U would cost 100x more, the Switch is still better. Don't understand your point. Money does not justify if something is good if it is worth more (even if it is better). For instance, there are some rare Gamboys going around and even Nintendo games for 2000+ $, they still are all worse than the Switch.

@brandiesel: I think it might indicate Switch has more RAM than Wii U. It could be something else though to do with the audio hardware, but RAM seems like the most likely possibility to me.

@brandiesel: Because it's all digital. 0s and 1s all sound the same. If games shipped on vinyl we'd have something to talk about.
