I've played a bunch of games with my brother (locally). I don't know about all the modes and options, but the actual gameplay is just okay. It's a lot better than EA's NHL games used to be (back when they were arcadey hit fests), but it still isn't as good as the NHL2K games were back around... '04? '05 maybe? The AI might be better in NHL 11, but the controls and the feel of the game aren't up to par with whatever NHL2K game I played all the time when I was in college.
Passing, for one, really sucks. It seems like at least 50% of my passes go to the wrong guy, which has never been a problem for me in a hockey game before.
Shooting is handled with the right analog stick, which honestly doesn't work any better than pressing a button, and it ends up being more cumbersome.
Checking isn't satisfying at all, except in maybe one or two instances per game.
And the deke is practically worthless.
With all that said, it's still a lot of fun. It's hockey. Hockey games are always fun. And I may just not be good at the controls. And I may prefer the more exciting and accurate but probably less realistic controls of that NHL2K game. The deke in that game was incredible if you could time it right. Checking was AWESOME with some enormous hits and painful sound effects. Passing was simple. Shooting was simple. It gave you full stick control for special poke checks, PLUS a regular quick poke check button.

I think you just suck at the game because I have no problems with those points you raised. Except for the non-satisfying hits. I mean it's more realistic so I appreciate that but sometimes when I'm losing I just want to knock a guy down.
But then again I got the game because I wanted a realistic experience. 2K's series was too arcadey for me and it didn't feel like hockey at all. It's rare for me to prefer a sim but with hockey that's all I want.
So yeah you just suck.
