Few criminals would just shoot someone during a robbery unless they really felt like they had to.

you really think that? that armed criminals are thinking about the presevation of life?

no, theyre thinking about A.) getting money, and B.) getting away with it.

Leaving a witness would seriously mess with part B.

yes but killing the victim wont at all attract attention to them will it

I'm pretty sure they don't want to be slapped with murder if they're caught either.

not true. in america, if you owe money you will probably be killed. hurt a lot first though.

the solution: legalize the trade and take the criminals out of the picture entirely.

problem solved, and everyone still has their guns.

Don't owe money then?

yeah, good idea. Now we just have to worry about theives.

But having a gun carried with you, you have options people do indeed try to rob with out weapons if this the case then you are prpared and you win. If the mugger does indeed have a gun it might just be wiser to let it go. But say you are held up late at night on a not so busy street, and the suspect has no mask well there is a decent chance that he might just take care of you. Its all about the status of the situation.

Yep I doubt they will shoot you unless their life is threatened

rofl. yes, because most criminals act rationally. didn't someone just randomly get beheaded on a bus? how about that school shooting? i don't think their lives were threatened....i don't think they got their guns legally either.

[QUOTE="H8sMikeMoore"]

we find it reasonable. and its okay if you dont get it. but the sheer number of people just blatantly laughing at americans and not even listening is pretty disrespectful, especially considering most americans are very respectful to europeans.

the murder rate in our country is directly related to our drug and prostitution policy, not our gun rights policy. if you own a gun in this country that isnt illegal you arent getting away with it. But that very important point DOSENT seem to matter to anti gun people

jointed

You see, that's why I'll never suggest that the US government ban guns. I know that it's a part of your "culture" (so to speak), just like the liberalisation of drugs and prostitution is a part of the Netherland's (this is not meant to be a bad thing). I respect the fact that you Americans want to have the right to bear arms, and that's it's non of my business....I just don't want it here in the UK.

Again, whatever floats your boat, if the majority of Americans want to keep the second amendment...then no-one should ever interfere with it.

and thats a totally reasonable thing to say. if the people of the UK dont want guns, then by all means DONT have them.

If I was being robbed at gunpoint, the last thing on my mind would be "oh, its ok...he most likely won't shoot me"

This is what would be going through my mind:

1. "WTF?"

2. "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god..."

3. "Jesus, did I just **** myself? Please dont kill me I dont want people to talk about how I **** myself at my funeral"

4. "Who the hell is this guy? Why is he robbing me?"

5. "Should I do something? He might want to shoot me after all"

6. "Hmmm he only weighs like 150 pounds, I could problably take him. Plus, he is too busy looting my valuables to keep that gun on me"

7. "HAHAHA BULLRUSHED YOU MOTHER******! Now I got the gun...call the cops on yourself"

Well, number 7 I would say outloud after I got the gun. The first few are all interior monologue.

Why not ban knives? It seems more logical. Even fruit knives can be sharpened to be lethal. You don't really need metal knives. Just use plastic ones or buy everything pre-cut.

With guns, I'm being reasonable. ;) If you want it that way, do I have the right to own a nuke? I'm not going to kill anyone. I just... want it.

you see, thats why I cant agree with antigun people. Because of that attitude.

You all assume we want guns because we can, or because we feel obligated due to what our founding fathers said.

Yet you fail to take in the fact that we actually use the guns we buy, or they serve a purpose.

You buy a CD or movie or videogame a lot of the time for the hell of it. You dont spend hundreds, if not thousands, on something for the hell of it, or "because you can".

I might walk down the street and see a cool poster in a store and buy it because I think it looks cool, a spur of the moment purchase. But I am not going to walk past a gun shop and go "oooh, that gun is purdy, here is 600 bucks".

Buying a gun is more like buying a car. You buy it with a very very specific intent.

owning guns is old fashioned and should have stayed with the founding fathers. In this day and age gun ownership isnt needed

why not?

because this isnt the wild wild west anymore, civilians dont deserve the privilege of owning a gun because we live in a civilized society. Yes I know so people commit crimes the police should sort it out. We aren't gun carrying vigilantes

So if an armed robber breaks into your house, are you just going to sit there and wait for the proper authority figures to show up and take him away?

no, theyre thinking about A.) getting money, and B.) getting away with it.

Leaving a witness would seriously mess with part B.

armed robbery is a stiff punisment in terms of prison time. I think theyre past caring about the consequences of their action.

rob someone and leave them alive: 50% chance of getting caught, 20 years in jail

rob someone and shoot them: 3% chance of getting caught, 25 to life

Those are madeup figures, of course, but you see my point. Its not hard to consider that the latter option is the best one. And thats if, if, the criminal is even thinking clearly at the time. Most would just shoot you outright.

What if the police dont get your stuff back?

What if you WANT to be a hero? am i allowed to make that decision for myself?or do YOU make it for me?

many criminals have gone on record in the US stating they go after people who seem weak, and if they knew people were armed they wouldnt go after them.

You stay alive by not being a hero and then allow the police to recover what was stolen.

1. Its not about being a hero, its about weighing the odds and doing something you feel is right. If you want to sit there and wait it out, go ahead. Maybe he wont kill you. But if you want to reach for the gun while his back is turn, thats a good move too. Maybe you have a chance to kill someone that maybe wanted to kill you.

2. When have you ever heard of something stolen being recovered. Sure, you might get your car back...without an engine, radio, doors, tires, and suspension! Once something is gone, its gone.

Thats the whole issue I have with this argument. If people want guns, they should allow it. Britain obviously is comfortable without them, and thats fine. It works for them. They have less gun violence than we do.

But having guns works for Americans too. Sure, it might increase gun violence, but those occur in bad areas most of the time, and we have more liberties than countries that ban guns. We can hunt and shoot targets to our hearts content.

[QUOTE="H8sMikeMoore"]Nope, you havent. SolidSnake35
I thought as much, but neither have you. I can understand your side of things but, beyond that simple understanding, I really don't care. From what I can tell, both our ways of thinking work... it's just preference. I'm used to a society without guns, is all.

ive made some very good arguments. and so have other people in this very thread. you do care, you keep coming back with WEAKER arguments.

Im used to a society that allows you to own a gun, and if you choose not to then you dont have to.

I value individual rights. If you dont thats fine. But dont act like youre better than I am because i excersize my will. Because you certainly are not.

Sure, you might get your car back...without an engine, radio, doors, tires, and suspension! Once something is gone, its gone. mrbojangles25

I used to be Pro Gun Control....until Washington DC banned guns and the crime rate sky rocketed.

I have no desire to ever own a gun, but I wouldn't deny someone else the right to own one. A vast majority of guns bought used in crimes aren't legally purchased to begin with.

[QUOTE="SolidSnake35"] It's my right to hurt others. alexmurray

Wrong again... it's your right to defendyourself. That might mean hurting your attacker, but you don't have the right to use a nuke, since it's 100% garunteed to kill people not involved.

Unlike guns. Or knives.

What and you think a attacker would happy when you pull out a gun, it would just make him more enraged

You mean more scared right? Attackers are aliens or monsters.

there are good arguments from both sides. but it can be as simple as this: some people want to protect their families with guns. some people don't want guns.

solution: those who want guns, buy them. those who don't want guns, don't buy them. no one has business telling me what i can own. if pro gun people were left alone, we would shut up.pro gun folk aren't trying to get anti gun folk to buy guns, we don't care. just let us keep ours.

no b/c if they didn't let us have guns the guy wouldn't have been there in the first place... *Notes that that is NOT the case at all. if it wasn't for her being able to have the gun she would have been SOL big time*

If some guy breaks into my house and starts stealing my stuff, it's not my job to be polite and calm him down. I'm gonna pull out my gun and scare his ass out the door.

I would never pull a gun to "scare" somebody. Luckily I live in a state where we no longer have to give someone a path out the door. If they've broken in, or are outside in the process of breaking in, you can use deadly force against them.

I have guns for a lot of different things, my pistol is for killing. You should never pull a gun on another person unless you are willing to use it on them. Don't pull a gun to scare them, pull it to kill them and then don't do it if they leave.

It is better to have one and not need it than to need it and not have it. Civilian firearms FTW. That poor burglar...he is never going to live this down.

I don't think foreign people understand. MOST of the gun crime in the USA is limited to certian poor, usually black inner city areas. Aka the ghetto. MOST of that crime is drug related. Most of the murders with guns are drug related in those slums. People who have guns for protection keep it in their house.. incase of a break in, they are not standing there with their **** in their hand while a possibly armed criminal is in their house where their family sleeps.

But, most people who have firearms use it for hunting or sporting purposes. I live in an area of Houston, Texas with about 80,000 people. Upper middle class community.. mostly white, and basically crime free. Guess how many people own guns? Damn near all of us. So many people hunt here. So many people just like guns. Guess how many problems we have ever had here with guns? 0. Not 1 incident in this communitys 35 year history. How many murders? 1 in 35 years. And it happened 2 years ago when a Mexican from a dangerous part of Houston moved here and stabbed his elderly neighbor with a kitchen knife because she hated his dog because he kept going on her yard.
