According to the Gainesville Sun, fire chief Gene Prince told the church "that under the city's fire prevention ordinance, an open burning of books is not allowed." Turns out town code 10-63, a "General prohibition on outdoor burning and open burning," specifically outlaws the burning of (section 6) "Newspaper" and (7) "Corrugated cardboard, container board, office paper, which are akin to books, Prince said. bound copies of Islam's holy text fall into those categories"

I sense a law suit.

Free Speech vs. Fire Prevention Laws

Still, probably for the best if some wonky fire marshall ordinace stops this from happening.

So they build a brick housing for them.. oh gee. It's not very hard to go around that particular law, though it's cool that a law will delay their foolishness.

Since when does anyone follow the teachings of the religion they supposedly follow? I mean, i hear some guy who calls himself a christian is planning to burn a huge stack of holy books even though he's been told it will likely endanger the lives of soldiers.

If they have or haven't is irrlevant. A law doesn't cease being a law just because it isn't always enforced. Just like you can't get out of a speeding ticket by pointing out how others get away with speeding.

Don't you care about what'll happen to our soldiers?

Ultimas_Blade

So some guy's sitting around in Afghanistan, minding his own business. Suddenly he says, "I used to love Americans, but one guy burned a Koran so I now hate him and the 299,999,999 Americans that didn't burn a Koran. Yi yi yi yi yi!"

Our politically correct rules of engagement are endangering our soldiers far more than this one wacko preacher ever will.

it doesn't make it irrelevant at all...if it can be proven in a court of law that the law was buying enforced unequally (and any decent lawyer can prove it if it is indeed the case here)...then you have grounds for dismissal....and since it took this long for the fire cheif to come up with it...I'm gonna guess that this is more political than worrying about fire safety....

That's not really how it works. How it works is groups and regimes like the Taliban and Al Queda broadcast images of a burning stack of Qur'rans on TV, or in posters, and say stuff like 'the zionist west wants to exterminate all muslims!', and people become and incensed and upset at what they're seeing and believe it. It is the image which is the problem.

Just so you know, the fire chief has not intervened here. You have to submit an application to the local fire department if you want to do any large-scale bonfire. They did so, as they are supposed to, and the application was rejected on the grounds given in the article. They were given several alternatives so that they can still carry out the burning, including doing so on a smaller scale or in an indoor, well-ventilated building. So the accusations of bias and unfairness are misplaced.

Non Denominational. "In Christianity, non-denominational institutions or churches are those not formally aligned with an established denomination, or that remain otherwise officially autonomous." Burning books is hardly comparable to suicide bombings etc...

By the way Snipes, we're still waiting for you to show us where similar Bible burning was allowed in the same jurisdiction.
