any car can be reliable if you take care of it and any car can crap out at 50k miles if you dont, as for style and performance, its up for debateg-unit248We took excellent care of our Chevrolet Cavalier. It crapped out around 135k miles.
Almost any Geo Prizm, Toyota, or Honda can outdo that.
americans buy american cars cos it seems that they are terrified by the thought anyone can build somethin better than they can whether it be cars or electronics etc etc. They blindly buy their home made rubbish despite the cars being complete rubbish when compared to a real car.
The best (and i use that term in the loosest possible way) american sports car is a corvette which has a live rear axle and leaf spring technology which anyone with even the remotest bit of engineering know how will tell u is ancient. It has a 7 litre engine which in itself sounds impressive but it only produces just over 500bhp which really is shameful when u consider that the Germans or Italians can get more than that from an engine half the size.
I like the term 'brute force engineering' when describing anythin american built because u can pretty much guarantee it will sound good and produce a good show but is ultimately rubbish. Look at the dodge viper with its 8litre:shock: engine lifted from a truck to see a great example of this, its loud and makes a good spectacle but compared to any other sports car its hopeless.
There have been rare exceptions to this like the original 64 mustang but it really took a nose dive from there on in. Why do u think that its only america that buys american cars? its because the rest of the world have become used to quality builds and good performance, good handling which u just dont get with american cars, dont even get me started on the interior quality of the things either.
In closing, European cars then Japanese. I wouldnt even put american cars in the same category as the afore mentioned im afraid.
Im European but nothing can be compared with American cars except English cars maybe.rom11
No offense but do you know anything about cars at all? English cars are practically non-existant any more. Proper road-production cars simply aren't made here any more, the big factories have changed to making super-godly super cars every decade instead.
I'd love for you to name me the american car which nothing can be compared to. :? The only american car which i like is the Ford GT on sheer looks alone, but even then it's a horrendous drive. You have to fill it up with petrol literally every time you take it out on the road.
FORD:
Fix Or Repair Daily
Found On Road Dead
Any others I'm forgetting?
Rekunta
That's really not fair to be honest, as the Ford cars sold in Europe today are bomb proof. I dont know about all the generic sedans they make and sell in the US, but cars like the Fiesta and Focus are practically unbreakable. I know that wasn't the case 20 years ago, but Ford today really is amazing in terms of reliability. Their gearboxes are the best on earth.
[QUOTE="kruesader"]How can I prove a general opinion? I could probably find something but I won't for now, what I am saying is that most American cars are just a large engine in a stylish body, there is very little passion or true design involved.
Pro_wrestler
In that case, Japanese cars and European cars are internationally known for poor quality and performance. I can make up things aswell, since you can't prove what you said.
What he said is obviously true. What you said is completely false. :?

You seem to judging "quality" by just your impression at looking at a car. Cars made by the likes of Mercedes, Aston Martin, TVR, Ferrari and Porsche are all - generally - much better in terms of design and performance than american cars, which tend to have far, far more simplistic designs basically involving as big an engine as you can fit in a big, chunky body. Often resulting in a very powerful engine completely wasted on a car which isn't built for it, which is why they tend to be so unreliable.
Porsche, for example, once changed the material the little badge on the front of the car is made out of, because they calculated that it would better complement the car's weight distribution, providing better performance. Isn't that amazing?

Really depends on what you prefer. If you want reliability, then japanese cars have long outperformed both american and european made cars. For a while in the 90's GM and Ford made cars that had low reliability. Currently, they're actually making cars that don't break down and have good peformance, but no one wants to buy them anymore. Mercedes has a horrible reliability record. For years, they were given low scores in every consumer reports I looked at. Even BMW, has low to moderate marks in the reliability deparment. The idrive was a complete failure and bust and really only the 300 series gets good reviews.
Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus have consisently made cars that easily outlast american/european gas guzzlers. However, if you prefer the sensation of driving than I would take an american/european car over a japanese one.
Hmm... why everyone hate american cars? I think they are perfect compared to new BMW-s or Mercedes-es etc that creak like they are compound of little plastic pieces. They are powerful and comfort. And let's look back at the fifties when Americans made 5 meters tall ships while Europeans made some little boxes.rom11
:|. Joke? Or do you not know about these:
i don't give a damn about the 0-60 time or massive horsepower. I want fuel efficiency. regular unleaded is about 4.09 in my area :POntainMy last car had 40 mpg, my current is more like 25. But it goes much nicer, and I can use the A/C and still move forward at the same rate. I think it was a good compromise. Also, I only drive like 10 miles a day during the week.

Maybe cheap ones, sure. But their more expensive models are absolutely amazing. It's the same with Audis. I sat in one the other week and was just amazed at the cold, hard precision which goes into absolutely everything. The interior was just immense.

That's really cheap fuel if you're talking dollars for a gallon, in the UK the equivalent is almost $10.

I'm talking about longevity/mechanical reliability not performance. Mercedes has/had a very bad record with that. Even in top end models - at least back in 2004 when I was researching new cars - they scored very low. Audi not so good either. The best rated european car at that time was the VW passat - top of its class for its category. But the VW jetta was a bust. Not sure of 2008/2009 models.

it's not cheap in the US though. heck 10 years ago when i was in college it was about $1 a gallon. also i think ppl in the US generally have to travel more by car than most europeans.
