Depends. Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, etc are pretty effective. Jui Jitsu? Probably not so much unless you and the guy are alone.
As a rule of thumb, if something looks really really cool to do, it probably wouldn't work on the streets.
Martial Arts mostly teaches you how to react to various situations in a way that any technique that you could come across you understand a counter for it, but the ability to react to the situation is what is key.
I've never been in a real fist fight but my Dad has. He said the only thing that really translated from karate to a street fight was the correct form of punch.
Whatever happened to the ol' 'aim low and go' technique?!I've never been in a real fist fight but my Dad has. He said the only thing that really translated from karate to a street fight was the correct form of punch.

I heard a girl who has a black belt in judo got raped by some guy, so I'm wondering if martial arts really work in real life situations, or they just work in dojo ?Zensword
1. She's a girl. Not to be sexist, but that's rather big disadvantage in a fight.
2. Belts are almost meaningless and are rarely a good indication of skill.
[QUOTE="BluRayHiDef"]cudnt they all charge and tackle him instead 1v1?Somewhat relevant and awesome.

Well, it is choreographed. However, let's assume that it's real and not choreographed. The purpose of the match is to determine if Chinese Martial Arts - Kunfu is superior to Japanese Martial Arts - Karate. If they just jumped him, there'd be no way to determine which art form is superior because the match would depend on numbers.

If the girl was 5'3 and 100 pounds while the guy was 6'5 and 250 pounds her skills won't do much for her in most cases. You probably should get more details about what exactly happened assuming the story is actually true. A good martial artist could easily hold their own against another person of similar size using street fighting (not the game) in a fair fight but not all fights are fair.
yes its called krav maga it teaches u how to disarm melee weapons and guns, and use grapples and countershadokenYeah its actually pretty good since its not all about beating people up, its about getting out alive.
Best defense is being aware and not getting into problems. 2nd best is a gun that you are trained with and or real mace. Third is being in shape because martial arts are not very effective if you are weak, slow with no stamina. If you can not win then run.
yes its called krav maga it teaches u how to disarm melee weapons and guns, and use grapples and countershadokenThat's the one where It's pretty much survival right? It'll like teach you if you're in a position like that to use ANYTHING around you as a weapon plus all the disarming and grapples and countering.
I did Jeet Kune Do and Aiki-Jujitsu for about two years, I haven't had to use them yet but every one of my friends I ever sparred with in high school never wanted to spar me again after I took those classes lol. They do work.
Jeet-Kune Do is the best martial art by the way (challenge me I dare you!) Do that if its available.

[QUOTE="GameGuy642003"][QUOTE="BluRayHiDef"]wow thats insane. old movie, but still great. need insane martial arts movies? ask me.Somewhat relevant and awesome.

LOL. I just realized that you're using a slightly edited version of the GameTrailers avatar.
Boxing and muaytai yes. BJJ maybe if 1v1.
There's a coupld street fighting martial arts, the most notible krav maga, and the one I know Hapkido.
Im a black belt in tae kwon do, and ive lost every fight ive ever been in. One time, i tried to do a jump spinning roundhouse kick in a fight. the guy just tackled me as soon as he could dodge it. Most of the time, the opponent doesnt wait for you to do your fancy kicks and moves. he just rushes you and tackles you. so unless you are a wrestler, know krav maga (because, as one user said its VERY effective) or your into mma/ufc, your not gonna stand a chance in a real street fight. for the most part anyway

Still, if that doesn't bring you down and you get a hit in, then you still win.

How would you hit him in the nuts? With a punch? That would be stupid you would get kicked in the face. So the only other way to do it is to kick him in the nuts, and to make a man dropping hit to the nuts with a kick is harder than hitting someone in the face. It is very fast.[QUOTE="October_Tide"][QUOTE="lo_Pine"] He will have hit you in the face two times even if you are able to do that lo_Pine

Its not that its fighting like a girl its that if the guy you are fighting is a martial artist to some degree, he would not leave you an open space to hit him the nuts especially. Even if he did, he would see your leg coming because that would be the only thing. If it was your fist then your jaw would be broken and you would be unconscious from a kick to the face.yes, most forms of martial arts is effective in close quarters fight/street fights, however the ones that relies on grappling are not as you might square off in a very tight space most of the time.

I appreciate your honesty. I've never trained any real martial arts, but I wrestled as a real young kid and fought a lot growing up. I have never lost an actual street fight (only to my older brother), and I know many TKD guys who think they are hot stuff who would get waxed by a LOT of guys who are just naturally crazier and better fighters than them. TKD has the tendency to be too slow and too upright. If I ever saw someone trying to kick me, I just grab that leg and take them down. That's worked every time. Most people have no actual fighting skills, but to say martial arts training DOESN'T help is like saying exercise doesn't make you a better athlete. It does, but not ALL people are able to use it correctly when the time comes. Think about how many people play football or soccer or basketball. Not all of them are great at it, but they are better than someone who has never played. So, it just depends on experience, tenacity, and energy. They always say no matter how awesome you are at fighting, there's somebody out there who can beat you.
P.S. Judo is like upright wrestling, so if a fight goes to the ground, then there's not a lot of training in that realm.

You are also under the assumption that the blows would do enough damage first time around, they may or may not. Unless you know your opponent, then no fight is that black and white.
Therefore shot to the balls winz teh game. Whether you can land a hit, well that's just another matter.
