Alright, so recently I have gotten quite fed up with religion. Let me start off, I'm personally an Agnostic - I don't believe in a certain religion, but due to the complexity and intelectually of this world, I'm open to the possibility of there being some kind of a higher being. The reason why I've gotten so fed up lately is that I've noticed that several of my friends are in fact religious.

Now, I don't really have a problem with religious people in general, although I do think it is silly for someone to believe in something written in a book which is supposedly 2000 years old. My problem, is when people "religionize" their lives. This is when someone let their religion control their way of being and dictate certain aspects of their lives, such as nutrition (this is the case for many muslims and jews). At each party, my friend has been looking at me and my other friends with envy whenever we have been consuming alcohol. He has told me that he does indeed want to try it, but that he can't because of his religion. Now, I'm not defending alcohol or drugs, but I do think that it is a shame when people are held back from being who they want and doing what they want, because of religion. There are of course people, who are not like this at all. In fact, sometimes, religion can cause people to not care about being a good person - as it gives them the possibillity to just repent after every "sin" they've commited.

In my opinion, everyone was born an atheist/agnostic. You might state that many people "need" religion, but by saying this you basically say that people who don't have a religious inherit some kind of superiority. I don't think non-religious people are more intelligent than religious people, as I believe that 90% of religious people are religious only because their parents taught them to be. Very few people discover religion as a grown up. Basically, I think religion is a false need given to people by their parents (in the vast majority of cases), and being a need (something you couldn't do without) it makes you weaker.

There are of course other aspects of religion as well, many of which I'd describe as being very dark. I went to a christian junior high school myself, so I have witnessed for 3 years of my life what religion can potentially do to people. Religion has worked as a tool of control and segregation since the beginning - it is the reason for tons of wars and an awful lot of blood has been shed in the name of religion. This still happens today, and i honestly cannot conceive of how anyone would willingly associate themselves with something that is the cause of so much despair. Another thing I noticed, going to that school, was that the people there did indeed have a feeling of superiority. I was looked down upon as if I was a bad person, due to the fact that I was not religious.

Then you have the problem related to religious discussions, or criticizing religions - it is just not accepted among many religious people. Personally, I find it incredibly silly to believe in an invisible man who lives in the sky and watches your every move. In fact, I find it unreasonable for people to expect me to fully understand and respect that they believe in such things. I would not expect them to be able to hold a straight face either, had I told them that I believe in an invisible unicorn that follows me around all the time. Before you ask - yes, these two things are just as silly.

Now, even if you do happen to believe in God, and believe that the stories in The Bible or The Quran are true, then I'm fine with that. However, I find it disturbing when people choose to actually worship the people/someone written about in such a book. Call me disrespectful as much as you want, but I do find it hard to accept that people believe in Noahs ArK and such stories like the one about Jesus rising up from the grave. I cannot help but think of it as anything but a clear sign of ignorance. Religion seems like an easy answer to it all - it makes people less curious about the actual origin of life (as I do not believe in the one described in The Bible), and thus holds the human race back from evolving - not to mention all the wars and violence it is constantly causing.

So, what do you people think, OT? Am I being unreasonable? What's your answer to religion? It would be nice if we could get a little discussion going here.

I am most definitely a Christian. In fact I'm a Roman Catholic Seminarian studying for the priesthood, for the most part being religious is a requirement.

I was raised a Christian, but in the end I just don't see any reason to believe in God, therefore I don't. I don't think you're being unreasonable, either. Religion suits some, doesn't suit others. Just let those who are religious live their life and you live yours.

You can only be Christian, Muslim, Agnostic or Atheist? Do other religions not exist?

Sorry, I forgot to add an option for "other".. I know, I suck. Where I live, however (Norway), there are pretty much only christians and muslims.

Let me ask you this.. Your parents are roman catholics as well, right? Coincidence? Why aren't you a Shia or Sunni muslim instead? Oh, and what do you mean by religion being a requirement? You make it seem like a part of you think's religion is wrong, but that you don't listen to that part because your job requires you to be religious. I'm just asking :)

I'm surprised there wasn't only the choice of being Agnostic. That's what they usually suggest in other threads.

No, I've made my faith my own. I've consciously decided and truthfully believe that this religion is correct. (Don't want to get in a religious argument, simply my belief) The last part was simply meant to be sort of sarcastic. It's obviously that in order to be a priest you sort of need to be catholic first, it was suppose to be a little (obviously rather lame) joke.

I am an atheist. I stopped believing in god very early on even though Im from Poland and from a christian/catholic family. Its the simple case of god and religion not having any effect on my life. Praying never solved any problems for me and it did not make my childhood better. I think I was about 11 or 12 when religion lost all meaning to me. Today Im against all religions be it christianity or satanism. Its a disease and has no place in the modern world. The Pope and the joke that is the Vatican is proof of that. I would say that I hate religion, but I dont hate religious people in a way. I dont judge others becouse they believe something I dont, I dont feel like I am in a position to do that. To me god means nothing, but if someones feels a need to guide their life as others think they should its their problem. Recently I had a problem though, becouse my sister unfortunately decided to baptise her child and Im supposed to be there to be the godfather? (not really sure if thats what its called...found a translation of the polish word - Baptismal or sponsor). I will in the end ofcourse do it since itll make my sister happy. Itll be the first time I step my foot inside a church in 10+ years.

I'm Muslim, but i wouldn't say i'm a devoutly practicing one. I follow all but one of the main duties routinely. the one i can't seem to follow on a routine basis is the 5 times a day prayer every day.

call it a bit of laziness, a bit of philosophical problem with the idea of prayer itself.

but i would say i have a pretty 'liberal' or classical understanding of the religion, been reading a lot lately on Islamic history and so i've been getting a lot more insight.

That said however, no i wouldn't call myself religious, but when i do pray i am not praying to an invisible man in the sky, God (or Allah as he is referred by his Arabic name - also an older name for God then the AngloSaxon word for God.) to me is something that is very hard to be personal with. it's not a dude you pal around with, and i understand this runs counter to Christian thought of the divine (example their personal relationship with Jesus Christ). to me God is that magneficient creator, a force if you will, that through His (use the term loosely as God has no gender) will all things are possible and all things are made to be.

For instance science does not really run counter to my religious belief of a God. I think it's wrong to mix science and religion, because i think religion puts a limiter on science, what i think science is a tool to understand the universe we live in, the theory of Evolution doesn't strike me as an abomination to God either. It is a well developed and well backed up theory, but all it tells me is the process of how we came to be.

I could go on and on. but those are my thoughts.

I will be honest here and say what I truly think: Religion is fake. That's all there is to it. I would rather put my trust in friends than in a holy book that has been tampered with for hundreds of years.

I consider myself a Christian. Most Christians would probably disagree. So take anything I say with a grain of salt. :P

I do sympathize a great deal with what you have to say, though, TC. I think a whole lot of religious people have missed the whole point, and have gotten way too caught up in rules and fears that do nothing towards fostering a healthy relationship with God and one's fellow man.

I think that you're thinking about religion too much TC.

I'm an Atheist but it doesn't bother me what other people believe in unless it interferes with my life in a negative way. If someone wants to believe that the Universe was a product of Intelligent Design then let them. If they want to waste their life going to the church of the religion they've chosen then so be it.

No, i am not religious. I find religion offensive for some reason. Its like an adult version of Santa Clause, believing in something thats not real because of stories that were taught to you as a child, except the lie is perpetuated for a life time, unless of course you can wake up and think for yourself and finally understand what a bunch of hogwash you swallowed. I remember back when i was very young, i was forced to go to Sunday school, but one day i was kicked out because i asked too many questions, especially questions regarding faith. I just could not believe everything the teachers were saying, and ultimately i was kicked out of Sunday school because they said i did not have any faith. They just could not brainwash me, i guess.

No, Islam is the 2nd largest religion in the world with 1.2 billion following Christianity at about 2.2 billion. Buddhism actually only has about 400 million adherence. Hinduism is much larger at about 900 million.

Not religious at all. I was born into a Muslim family and tried to be a good Muslim even though I was very sceptical of it even as a kid. Eventually I thought F' it, God doesn't exist. People only believe it because some tyrant 14 centuries ago had a book written about it. After that I immediately converted to unicornism because it seemed more likely than the the fairy tails in the other old books.

After that I immediately converted to unicornism because it seemed more likely than the the fairy tails in the other old books.

Why, because I believe that unicorns are more likely to exist than a supreme being that transcends us all?

Used to be a religious Christian, now I'm a closet-atheist.

I'm a non-hardcore Roman Polytheist. I pray every now and then to the gods. I'm sure they are too busy doing godly things for them to be interested in me.

No way I believe in god. For those of you that do; do you really believe everything in the bible?

from my experience, christians have a tendency to look away from the "bad" part of the bible.. namely the old testament. what many of them dont seem to realize, though, was that both of them contain Gods words. so, if you think the old testament is horrible.. then well, that means you think god is horrible.

I've always thought of this. The only 'true' Christians if you will are those who follows God's word, and since the Bible is God's word which is full of homophobia, the killing of those who oppose Him and the commandment to live every single second as God intended you to, the only 'true' Christians are extremists. And if all Christians don't do these things, aren't they going against God's word, therefore being unloyal to Him?

Well let's see im overly influenced by Jesus and i also believe he was god-like (son of god). I believe in an omnibenevolent God and in fact very recently have had this belief strengthened tenfold. I don't belong to a religious group. I don't really have any other thoughts about god; they aren't worth explaining as they change too much.
