[QUOTE="wis3boi"][QUOTE="themajormayor"] K again the same pathetic excuse. The same could be said with the opposing case where a religion is in power. How about some consistency? And secondly no Judaism didn't have any power to threaten the established government or politicsthemajormayor

Whether it actually was a threat is not relevant, they thought it was. Hitler thought jews were a threat, but obviously they weren't, they never even had issues with people before that. What you fail to realize is What we say can indeed be applied to religious leaders, its all human nature to do these things. I really see nothing here exclusive to atheism, or what this has to do at all with the topic. Religions start conquest of other religions, of atheists, of cultures all throughout history and vice versa. Atheism is not a hivemind or a collective. It has no leaders, books, rules, establishments, or anything. Nothing is done in the name of atheism.

I know there are no leaders, books etc. But Atheism is still something. And people have killed for that something. And of course it's not exclusive to Atheism I never said so. I am saying religion can't be blamed or lack of religion. Human nature alone is to blame in this case.

No atheism is not something, in fact its a complete lack of something.. And yes religion can blamed if we are going to have people declare absolutes in suggesting "Oh thats not Christianity's fault its the person who twisted it" Or any religion for that matter. You tell me this what is the correct message? Because if we look at this historically we have millions of different view points that seem to be just as certain in declaring the will of god.. Who the hell are you to know what Christianity truely is? Its what you your self personally believe in, not any one elses.

I would feel better about myself and the universe if I believed I was specifically made and crafted. Some people just can't handle the fact that they're totally insignificant, and will have absolutely no impact on human civilization, let alone the universe.imaps3fanboy
Once I came to understand life had no meaning and humans were just a tiny civilization among an endless ocean of cosmic dust, I was at total peace with myself. Like you said, it really irritates some people that nature doesn't care about Earth or life on it. I'm not one of those people

........... You just owned your self.. What you just pointed out is human nature.. That we can say the exact same thing FOR ANY PERSON in history that decided to harm, kill or oppress some one different from their own.. Something that every society in history has done including religious based monarchies, theocracies etc etc.. What you just pointed out is a action that has absolutely NOTHING to do with atheism, but human nature in general..

sSubZerOo

Right just like with the cases of religious equivalents

Where did I argue otherwise? The only criticism I leveled towards religion is for a set of ideals that appear absolute, historically they are not absolute what so ever.. So why do you keep acting like your values and ideas are absolute when Christians a few hundred years back would think your a heretic? Why is a text that people take so seriously in a code of life that has often times no greys just black and white so damned vague that it has created entirely different sects that have killed one another for centuries due to differences in belief? Atheism is not superior because it is not the same thing, religion is just not about the belief of god.. Its an entire template of ideals and supposed morals which is basically a political movement.. Atheism is not, hence when we have people be critical of past religious leaders that justified their actions throught he bible.. You can not bring up something like Soviet Russia as a counte rpoint because Atheism is not a set eddict or ideas.. The arguement here is this, who is right? The Christian 500 years ago, or you? In the end of the leaders should be criticized not based upon a belief system, but secular rational thought.. Whether your religious or not..

You are just repeating the same arguments you started with. And again I say "a template of ideals etc" is not a something that is necessary for persecution. And then I don't understand the last bit. Why are you asking about who's right between me and a Christian? Wat? And the last sentence, I never claimed anything else.

It actually makes sense. Believers have that coping mechanism called religion to help escort them through their exceedingly limited and otherwise pointless time on earth. It's probably easier to be happy when you feel like you are part of something important or that you have a purpose ( hint: you aren't and you don't ).

[QUOTE="sSubZerOo"][QUOTE="ShadowMoses900"]

Don't bother using logic, they will downplay it and try to right it off as atheism having nothing to do with it. They do becasue they can't admit their idealogy has done bad things before, they don't want to admit that it's not perfect. The same way some Hardcore Muslims will downplay the violence commited in their religion (same goes for hardcore christians/jews ect....)

It's funny how a lot of atheists say they have no faith, but yet they treat their atheism like it is a religion. Especially considering how it takes a ton of faith to be an atheist, they believe there is no God, they believe the universe had no creator, that is a claim of faith. Like I said, a lot of atheists treat their atheism like it's a religion.

ShadowMoses900

AND I AM TRYING to tell you WHAT IDEALOGY? Please tell me what is the idealogy of Atheism? Because there IS none.. There is no giant book that we can take examples from, there is no overbearing authority in this matter.. What the Soviet Union did was no different than really ANY dictator in history whether it was a religious one, a atheist one, or a secular one!

You getting upset over my comment is no different from a religious fundi who get's upset at people for not believing exactly as they do. Your no different, only your idealogy belief is that there is no God and they believe there is.

Your both fundamentalists in your own way, there are plenty of atheists on here who say things like

"religion is stupid, it holds us back, religious people are just dumb and wrong, the world would be better off withouth them"

which is exaclty the same as a hardcore muslime who says

"all non muslims are stupid, they hold us back, they are just dumb and evil and the world would be better off without them".

Atheists treat their atheism like it's a religion. It's really no different. And you defending it is no different from a religious fundi who downplays other aspects of their beliefs. Muslim women get oppressed and Muslims downplay it, Atheist Dictator in Soviet Union kills tons of religious people and outlaws religion and you downplay it. It's the same thing.

Of course you wont admit or like this, but it's the truth. Atheism has harmed people just like every other idealogy.

And you have to have a ton of faith as an atheist,

you follow many science books and believe in them without question, even though you haven't done the research or seen it yourself.

You believe there is no God and no after life even though you have no proof there isn't.

You believe your way is right and others are wrong.

You believe the universe came about randomly without a creator.

All that takes faith, it takes a TON of faith. Like I said, plenty of atheists treat their atheism like it's a religion. Of course your going to deny it all because your an atheist fundamentalist, just like a fundamentalist relgious person denies evolution or the blood that got spilt in their religion.

....................................... Nope.. Atheism does not prescribe to science.. You can lose your faith and be a atheist and do not have to understand or even accept science.. You do not have to accept, understand or believe that the universe was randomly created.. Or numerous other things.. And yet again the belief or disbelief of a supposed afterlife has absolutely nothing to do with Atheism what so ever.. You seem to not understand what atheism is what so ever, because it has absolutely nothing to do with the things you stated.

It's pretty funny, it's from a comedian. He explains it pretty well. Atheism is an idealogy, and atheists are just as sensitive about their atheism as hardcore religious people are about their relgion.

Tons of Hardcore Muslims got offended at South Park over a joke, just like tons of atheists get offended over when someone wishes them merry christmas or the dollar bill says "in God we trust"

There is really no difference, if that kind of stuff offends you all I can say is: Put a Helmet on.

You just yourself called it disbelief and not lack of belief. It's two different things. It doesn't matter though cause you can still stand up for your lack of faith which so many people here has shown. Or atheism. That excuse isn't any better than your "no rules" excuse I am not Christian so I won't interpret their religion.

Here's another one:

Dane Cook - Sneezing Atheist - YouTube

You probably want him to be stopped and censored, kind of like the same way religious fundies want to stop free speech that goes against their beliefs.

Remeber the T-Shirt thread? You and a bunch of other atheists on here wanted the kid to stop wearing his shirt because you didn't like it, sensitive much? Much like a religious fundie who doesn't want people wearing shirts that go against their views. No freedom of speech.

Honestly I don't doubt it. A lot of the ateists I know in real life are always angry and pissed off all the tme, especially at religious people. Kind of like OT, so many people here seem so upset and angry at religion and religious people in genral, that kind of anger isn't healthy.

Plus it's got to be super depressing to belive that life has no purpose and when you die that's it. Glad I don't live with that view, I choose to be happy and believe my life has a purpose.

ShadowMoses900

So you're religious only for your personal happiness? Does that mean you wouldn't be religous otherwise?

I never once called you stupid, I never said I hated your religion, I'm not angry, and yet you keep assuming things about me that are 100% false. Keep being delusional, it amuses me. Your only comebacks are youtube videos of comedians. Get off your high horse and realize the irony in every one of your posts in here. "I'm right, you're wrong." Wow, that's deep, man.

And no I don't hate atheists, I love them. I have to because it's part of my religious views.

Though I doubt a lot of atheists feel the same way. But that's ok because I love them anyway. Love, tolerance, forgiveness, mercy, believing all humans have value, are all part of my spritual beliefs. I love you atheists, even if you don't love me, and that's ironic. Espeicially sense you have nothing that makes you love religious people.

You guys don't even believe in love lol. But I do, and I love you! I want each and every one of you to live long happy lives and have the best in life. I hope you all find love (even though you don't believe in it) and live your lives to the fullest.

Dude what?

I believe in a thing called love.

Remeber the T-Shirt thread? You and a bunch of other atheists on here wanted the kid to stop wearing his shirt because you didn't like it, sensitive much? Much like a religious fundie who doesn't want people wearing shirts that go against their views. No freedom of speech.

ShadowMoses900

Also, about this. Apparently you didn;t read my posts. I don;t give a flying sh*t what someone wears on their tshirt, whether its about jesus or not. it doesnt affect me, but if I ran a school, I sure as hell would not allow it because someone in the school would get offended, tell their parents, and then start a law suit over it. You have to apply some rules in public places to avoid conflict. The kid that wore that tshirt didnt just wear it, he preached his views on other students and annoyed them, the school asked him to stop numerous times, and he refused. He deserved what he got. Not because of the shirt's content, but because he refused to follow the rules.

Here I'll just leave

THIS

here

It's pretty funny, it's from a comedian. He explains it pretty well. Atheism is an idealogy, and atheists are just as sensitive about their atheism as hardcore religious people are about their relgion.

Tons of Hardcore Muslims got offended at South Park over a joke, just like tons of atheists get offended over when someone wishes them merry christmas or the dollar bill says "in God we trust"

There is really no difference, if that kind of stuff offends you all I can say is: Put a Helmet on.

ShadowMoses900

That guy is hillarious, and pin-points exactly the kind of BS I see from atheists all over this board. I'm truly astounded by the amount of time and energy people who are "atheists" spend thinking about a god they say doesn't exist. If god truly didn't exist, and they knew it, there would be an "Atheism Union" for people to spend countless hours on discussing how they DON'T believe in something, there wouldn't be a user named "Rational Atheist" who spends all his waking day on the internet trying to promote "rationality." And there sure as **** wouldn't be pompous pricks parading around the internet trying to "convert" believers. It's kind of like if someone created a "Fringe fanclub" and then an opposite group created a "We don't watch Fringe fanclub" and talk about how much Fringe blows, but spend countless hours reviewing episodes to say why they hate it, and get people to stop watching it. I don't think there even should be the term "atheist" that people can label themselves with, and put themselves in a nice little "community." There should just be religious people and non-religious people, Christians and non-Christians. And if someone doesn't like our philosophy, then they can f*** off.

Wtf is this sh!t.. You can believe, follow, and accept in these things whether your religious or not.. I find this highly insulting in suggesting that I am some how incapable of this..

...Not sure if serious... So you would hate us if you didn't have to love us? Your posts don't make you sound very tolerant.

I won't "love" you back but I'm not going to hate you just because your religious. That would be stupid.

If the kid was an atheist you would have defended him and you know it.

Though I agree with you about him preaching, that wasn't right.

However I bet if the kid was an atheist and preaching atheism stuff you would have defended it.

There you are, generalizing again. No, I would not have. You can't follow the rules? You're gone. If he was preaching his atheism on other students in a school I ran, he'd get suspended just the same. Any other ignorant assumptions you wanna make tonight?

Whats preaching atheism? Because that would basically him being saying "god doesn't exist!".. And if it was bothering the kids thats unwarranted harrassment.. Which is grounds for discpline..

That wasn't what I was referring to, but what is love for an atheist? It can't really exist for you can it? To you it's just some belief or chemical in the brain (which is partly true) but it ends there, it doesn't come from anywhere else. By love I meant love as in general. I love atheists, I have to. I love them as the human beings they are, they have just as much value as anyone else and I will always stand up for an atheist to speak their mind.

I pray for everyone on here, even the atheists. I don't pray that you change your views, no that goes against free will and isn't what God wants, what I do pray for though is that each and everyone of you get's blessed and finds happiness (or continues your happiness) in your lives, that you overcome whatever obstacles that are bothering you in your lives (everyone has their own mountians to climb) I pray that you all live long and successful and happy lives.

That's it, if that offends you then too bad. I love you guys, like I said. And I want the best for you, even if you don't love me back.

I think you mixed the term "love" with "faith." Yes, it is a chemical in the brain, but what's the big deal about that? I love my family, I love my line of work, I love the life I ended up with, and I'll love my soulmate. I don't need a deity for any of that.

You have NO idea what your talking about WHAT so ever.. Atheism is the disbelief of a supreme being.. No where does it state you can't believe in things like that.. Yet again you do not have to accept science or other countless things.. Even when you do accept scientific theory and fact, there is countless unexplained things in the universe that we can believe in what we want.. JUst because I don't believe in god, doesn't mean I can't believe in love between a person..

You don't truly love us. You can't actually love us in the way you love a family member. You can tolerate, hope and wish for us the best all you want but you can't truly love us. Not that I would have a problem with it or anything.

Ahh... the I love you no matter what

So atheists can't get married or have a girlfriend or boyfirend? Yeah.....

Pikdum

That wasn't what I was referring to, but what is love for an atheist? It can't really exist for you can it? To you it's just some belief or chemical in the brain (which is partly true) but it ends there, it doesn't come from anywhere else. By love I meant love as in general. I love atheists, I have to. I love them as the human beings they are, they have just as much value as anyone else and I will always stand up for an atheist to speak their mind.

I pray for everyone on here, even the atheists. I don't know you guys personally yes, but I love you the same way as I love my nieghbors and my best friends and all the other personal people in my lives. I'm not very close to my family so I don't really have one, but I still love all of you guys regardless, even if I don't know you or you guys don't like me, I still wish and pray that you all live happy and long lives and find much joy in it and overcome the troubles you face in your lives (everybody has obstacles in their lives in one form or another).

There is really no difference, if that kind of stuff offends you all I can say is: Put a Helmet on.

the_plan_man

It's a belief system so its not exactly that surprising that you see that kind of behavior. First of all in reality you don't see atheists trying to persuade believers all the time, it's a far less common occurence when compared to believers trying to spread their beliefs.

Also as I mentioned before, the fact that they don't believe in a deity is a meaningless detail, since it is still a belief. People will try to persaude you which type of computer is better, which shoes are better, or even on intangible non-real things such as which comic character is better. This element of human psychology is why the argument above is irrelevant and not well thought out.

That's all well and good but have you taken a look into social sciences? You can learn so much more.

Bill Maher can be pretty funny at times, but most of the time not when it comes to religion.. I honestly think is entire view point on religious belief to be too extreme and in many ways no better then extremists of the said religions he is bashing.

Is it? I see all the time irreligious people trying to "spread the word" of why we shouldn't believe...and the number seems to be growing larger every day. Atheism may not technically be a "religion," but it is a religious belief full of people who are just as militant, closed-minded, and intolerant as their religious counter-parts. While there may be a few exceptions, the majority of the ones I see are not.
