I actually found a sense of liberation upon becoming an atheist. I was raised in a Catholic household and I just couldn't handle the doctrine involved and the bullsh*t dogma that came with it. I was tired of living everyday in fear that if I did something usually not perceived to be a big deal, I would go to hell or God would punish me. And then there was the whole ordeal on whether I should just keep going with the flow or come out, stop going to church and risk upsetting my parents. I even got confirmed because I knew that if I didn't, I'd upset my parents.
Being Christian was one of the lead factors in why I had such a sheltered childhood, and because of it, I missed out on a lot of opportunities to develop the same social skills that would have came in handy today.

Forget heaven and hell
Just be a good person.
There is a God but not the angry volcano God of conventional religion.
A God who loves all his children, even when they make mistakes.
Be honorable in your dealings.
Help those weaker than yourself.
No matter what the truth is vis a vis heaven/hell.
Balance is the key. Not too much sin and gluttony. Not too much church.
Rule of thumb, just try to be a good person.
