If you believe 9/11 didn't change anything, you are severely mistaken.InEMplease
It shouldn't have. People die all the time from causes that are more relevant every day. Just because a death comes with a picture doesn't make it more important than others.

It's not ON the site, and for ****'s sake, 9/11 didn't change ****.
Honestly, in one day, more people die of heart disease than died in the twin towers, so shut the **** up about 9/11.jaydough
So I guess using that same logic pearl harbor didn't change **** either? Jesus that logic sucks.

It still shows a lack of common decency building the "community center" as close as possible to ground zero.

It's like opening a gun store a mile away from where Kennedy was shot. Who cares?

But opening it up on the anniversary of the day he was shot, with a picture of the same gun that shot him? o.O

The difference is that it happened on our doorstep and we aren't used to it. We got so freaked out everyone became an instant patriot for the next 2-3 years... and supported going to war with two countries, one of which had nothing to do with 9/11.

It's how the world works. American lives are worth many more times then those of other countries.

Whether we choose to accept this stake in the ground or not is up in the air. Not to go off topic, but it's the difference between a globalist and a nationalist -- if I were to use those terms loosely.

Pearl Harbor was a message from the Japanese that they were going to go to war with the United States. That's an actual threat. The Taliban don't pose nearly the same threat that we're giving them credit for. The Taliban has killed maybe a few hundred since then. In 9 years. That's the equivalent of ~2 days in Iraq. Source.

Comes with a picture? You don't know what you're talking about. All of Manhattan, one of the most populated cities of America, saw those buildings collapse, causing thousands of people to lose family members and friends in the span of a couple of hours. I saw the smoke cover the horizon from the Bronx while in my elementary school. My father who was in Manhattan at the time saw all the people covered in blood and debris, and was unable to come home for many hours because of the event. Whether or not you believe the event was significant, it sure as hell was for millions of people.InEMplease
But was it signifigant enough to dwell on the fact for years afterwards? To excessively curb civil liberties and stigmatize an entire religion? It was big, but why do we have to be reminded of it every time we try to move on?

An entire religion was not stigmatized. People knew from the beginning that it was caused by terrorists, and terrorists are terrorusts no matter the religion. The patriot act, as invasive as it is, was put in place for our own protection, or so our government would have us believe. People in New York are reminded of it evertime we look over Manhattan and find it missing it's two front teeth.InEMplease
I crushed my toe when I was 8. My toe never looked the same and probably never will. I'm reminded of it every day, yet I don't see it as a big deal. New York on the other hand, will recover. Why slow down progress? It's like getting cut but not letting a scab form because you want to remind yourself that you should be more careful.

Why would we care what a British person thinks when the community board in Manhattan approved of the buildings construction? In other words, those that represent the people who live in that neighborhood approve.

It is also funny that this continues to be refered to as a mosque. It's a community center.

Former_Slacker

Actually I don't think most people know the building is a community center with a mosque on one floor, which is what is causing some of the opposition to be opposed.

Well then, that makes them idiots for opposing something that they don't know jack **** about.

I agree with him, it is without a doubt a tasteless thing to do in my opinion. I'm not overly upset by it or anything, but come on, we're going out of our way to please muslims on the matter. What really grinds my gears though is this country's false sense of equlity. You can bet if some radical Christian group had been behind the act there's no way they would be allowed to build a church ANYWHERE near there, yet true Christians in many ways hold less hatefulviews than true Muslims do.

jamejame

Take any one of the abortion clinics which has been violently targetted by Christian fundamentalists.

I'm willing to bet that at least one of those locations, a church has later sprung up nearby without any opposition whatsoever.

I think building it in that location is stupid and wouldn't be surpised if people attempt to burn it down or something. Common sense would tell you alot of people are going to get very upset over this, so why cause all this controversy.

Its personal property and i dont think the city can really do much. It should be a memorial, a sign of truce even. :)

So every news organization reporting it as an Islamic Center and Mosque is wrong? I'm not buying any information from THEIR site.

Pat has this tendency to go sensationalist at times. I think he may be going senile, or rather he's been there for a while.

He brings up some good points, no one should be bending over for any religion, especially in somewhat controversial circumstances such as these.

Well at least he made a video that isn't his typical monthly rant on burqas.

Not sure if cereal. It's a community center that is being constructed by Muslims. So if you want to call it an Islamic Community Center, that's fine. However all it's facilities are open to the public. Every article that suggests it's a mosque is indeed incorrect. Hell, the news was also reporting it was opening on 9/11, and that was wrong to, so I'm not quite sure what you're getting at here. When the source of the construction describes exactly what it is, and you ignore that information, how crazy can that be?

I posted articles from 2 different sources saying that it is an Islamic Center and Mosque. You posted one...From the People building it trying to state otherwise. I highly doubt every single news outlet got this wrong.

Every site says it is a Mosque and Islamic Center:

I posted the organizations website which is a primary source. Once again, it's being referred to ask a Mosque, however it is not. Do you have any evidence from a primary source that suggests otherwise?

Read the articles I posted.

"Our purpose is to interweave America's Muslim population into the mainstream society."Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf says the whole point of the proposed Muslim center blocks from the World Trade Center is to heal wounds, not open them.

[QUOTE="Pixel-Pirate"]

[QUOTE="Baconbits2004"] British Dude said they were =OSnipes_2

British dude lied. They haven't even started construction. You think they can build a huge community center in less than 2 months?

It seems 90% of the rage of this is from misinformation

Lets do a Q and A here.

Q: Is this a mosque?

A: No. It is a community center with a mosque in one of the floors. It is not a giant islamic architechture building.

Q: Is this being built on ground zero?

A: No. It is being built atleast a block if not more from the former site of the WTC.

Q: Are they opening on 911?

A: No date is planned yet.

1). IT is a Mosque and an ISLAMIC Center. Not a community center. http://abcnews.go.com/US/mosque-plan-clears-hurdle-protests/story?id=10747570http://abcnews.go.com/US/ground-mosque-faces-obstacle/story?id=10738961

2). He said it was being built a block or two away.

3). Yeah, I don't think there's a date yet.

So What if it is a mosque. Its a place where people worship god and not a terrorist training center. Most of you say you support freedom of speech and expression but I see nothing like that over here.

Primary source. Thank you.

The people building it aren't biased towards their cause..or trying to make it sound like something more pleasing to New Yorkers..especially under the circumstances and such..pshh..why would anyone ever think that..
