So France just banned the Burka.
So what do you guys think about that & burka ban in general?
I think it's bad cause banning stuff that's what communists do, and gamespot. So yeah start the debate.

Despite what you may hear, Ignorance is NOT bliss.
I don't support the ban and wouldn't want it done in my country. I don't understand why it would be banned in the first place.
Literally the only negative to allowing it is it basically covers all of the person, so people could commit crimes in them and then ditch the outfit and blend in with their normal people clothes that were underneath. But I'm probably thinking too hard. Who makes a getaway wearing one of those?
I don't know if I'd feel comfortable with a law stating that it's every citizen's duty to ensure their face is fully visible for the sake of law enforcement, but I can see why it's happened in France, where widening cultural differences have frequently sparked violence.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a multicultural society...but this "Islamisation" of Europe is seriously getting out of hand. I went shopping in one of the biggest malls in Brussels two days ago and I saw +- 100 Burkas and I heard more Arabic than anything else.

Call it horrid if you will, but it makes me feel like a stranger in my own country.

I think you've just proven my point, you sound like a modern day Archie Bunker.
[QUOTE="Lonelynight"]I believe anything that covers the entire face should be banned in public places.tenaka2Halloween would be catastrophic.
Halloween is once a year.. And only for a few hours.... This is 24/7 the entire year.. This is a security issue, some of these veils can cover the eyes making it impossible to tell even the eye color of the person or sex of the person at that matter.. Try walking around with a ski mask in summer time, lets see how far you get before the police are after you. I would hardly call the banning of the veil drastatic.. The veil is a cultural practice, not a religious one.. And there are plenty of cultural practices that have been banned for a multitude of reasons.

I live in a place that celebrates Halloween, and if I do, I would still support a ban of everything(including costumes) that covers the entire face. Plus I only said in public places, so people are free wear whatever they want in private venues.

I honestly don't know. I think it would make the differences feel less sinister and alien, but I can imagine it having the double effect of sending out a message that whites own France or something, which certainly wouldn't be good for cultural/race relations.[QUOTE="Lonelynight"]I believe anything that covers the entire face should be banned in public places.tenaka2Halloween would be catastrophic. Halloween isn't that big a deal outside the US. Carnivals would be a much bigger issue.

Ban Masks. Ban Facial Paint. Ban any and everything that covers your face. Even a wig.OmegaAxl
Thats funny because masks ARE banned inless its for a special event or for holiday.. And a veil just doesn't cover a certain part of your face.. It can cover EVERYTHING to the point that you can't even tell if there is a human being under there..

To me this outrage is quite absurd.. This isn't the first cultural practice that has been banned before in France, or for the West for that matter. And there is a actual legitimate concern with the veil.

I'm not certain what outrage has to do with my post, but I digress. The reasons cited for the law was described by French Lawmakers as 'cultural preservation', and not public safety. The latter seems to be a bit of a red herring formulated by apologists.

France is a secular nation. The Burka namely the veil is a CULTURAL practice.. This is not the only CULTURAL practice that has been banned before in France or the West in general.. Its just the Veil.. There can be a legitimate concern leveled as this as a security issue in which certain veils can obsecure absolutely everything including their eyes.. This is a security issue.. Granted things like hats and sunglasses obsecure, they do no where near the level of what the veil can do.. The only thing coming close are masks, and in places like the United States.. Unless its on private property/event.. Or its halloween during the allotted hour, you are not suppose to wear masks..

Well I agree than, thats absurd that it was done for that reason.. But from what I heard it was for security reasons above anythign else.. But I may be wrong.

Please stop with the security gibberish. That, according to the lawmakers wasn't why the law was passed. The legality of masks varies in the U.S. by locality, and certainly isn't enforced in all public areas even in places with said restrictions.
In Western culture we like to see the faces of other people we are interacting with, and covering your entire face could be considered anti-social. A minority should fit in with the country it's living in, not the other way around. The Burka is not essential to the Muslim faith and there are other head-dresses that serve the same religious purposes while still allowing the face to be visible.
So yes, I support the ban.

Cultural preservation is a better reason anyway.I support this whole heartedly in the interest of potential security risks. And before anyone jumps on me for that, I liken it to the same reason why clothing such as balaclavas are banned in public places in countries that aren't backward theocratic hellholes =]
In the scenario that a muslim woman is put up to commiting some sort of crime in a public place by her husband (I'll avoid the "B" word in case the PC Brigade arrive ;]), it'd be in the interest of public safety if she is not wearing hijab dressing. Better to be safe than sorry. It'd be interesting to see the reaction if a catastrophe happened in that situation. Would people ask if overlooking the greater public safety was worth it for allowing a woman's face to be covered?
People are also going to think I assume muslims have more of a propensity to commit atrocities or crimes from this post. That's not the case, they're no more prone than any nationals of said country. We prepare for the worst, that's why we have security and CCTV in places. Banning a face garment that could infringe on people's safety is no different!
