Do you agree smoking should be forbidden in all public places?

With public places I mean, pubs, restaurants, snackbars, sportscentres,...

Anyway I hate it when people smoke when I'm close to them, I have astma and the smoke takes a huge impact on my lungs.
I love sports and I worked a lot to improve my condition, but when someone smokes near me, I can still feel the impact 2 hours later.
Also Babies get sick from the smoke comming from the sigaret.
Pragnent woman breathing in smoke have higher chance of having a baby with bronchitis or astma.
Also nobody likes when someone is smoking nearby where you are eating.

Why do people start smoking in the first place?

no I do not agree. I hate smoking, but I believe in preserving freedoms. There should definitely be a non smoking area in all restaurants but not in bars. if you dont like it dont go.

I live in Belgium and it's not yet fully done. For example, you can't smoke in restaurants anymore since 1 january. Also there has to be a non-smoking part in bigger pubs. but they can smoke outside. But still whenever I go out, bigger parties, pubs etc. People allways smoke around me and it's annoying me badly.

I was in up-state NY last weekend, and I'll tell you it was nice to be in a bar without being choked by smoke. So yes, I think it needs to happen.

yeah Ireland is a great example to the rest of the world about that policy. Ireland inspired Belgium to do the same.

Unfair for people that cause non-smokers to get health conditions? They can smoke at home, let them ruin there own health, not others.

I highly doubt any of you have gottten sick off of somebody else's smoke. I personally don't smoke but I'm not a little whining baby about someone who does smoke. I was an asthmatic, I've grown out of it for the most part, but come on, smokers are voluntarily paying excise taxes which makes it cheaper for you non-smokers. Go cry.

smoking bans are silly. leave it up to business owners if they want to allow people to smoke in their establishments, create smoking rooms, or ban smoking completely. the government shouldnt be messing around with this stuff, period. not only that, i am rather skeptical of how harmful 2nd hand smoke is. either way, you dont want to breathe the stuff in, go somewhere else. simple.

I did get very sick because of people smoking around me. I was in a pub, got a hard time breating because of all the smoke, then wanted to get outside but it was so crowded I couldn't get out and I passed out. I woke up in the hospital... It is strange how I can keep running and running without a lot of problems, I do play semi-pro soccer. But when there is smoke around me I can hardly breath, and the effects of hard breathing really do take a lot of time to wear off. Also if it's completely illegal to smoke anywhere else except your private home, I don't think there will be as many children smoking as there are today.

Smoking should be banned in public places, mainly because most people really hate passive smoking and they can not get away from smokers if they are allowed to smoke in public places.

Ok, so you were in a pub drinking alcohol destroying your liver right? Not to mention your sense of judgement and reaction times which could leave you to much far greater injury than second hand smoke could ever do... if you really cared about your health you wouldn't have been there in the first place.

do you have a constant draft blowing in your face???? you should wear a motorcycle helmet and if you're in a crowded city chances are you're breathing a lot more harmful toxins than that although i do think smokers should be the ones to accomodate in restaurants and the like, but not outdoors let the market decide anyway

Yeah I can't stand how people are so stuck up and disrespectful to smokers. I honestly don't care. I'm usually at least 3 feet away from someone when they're smoking and at that range I'm not going to get a lot in me... if I'm down wind from them, I can simply move. Bunch of crybabies out there ya know?

It should absolutely be banned in all public places. One of the best things about living in CA is that this law is already in effect. Second-hand smoke kills, and it is not something we should take lightly.

I agree. But then again, I don't smoke, so it's easy for me to say that. It' would be tough to just ban smoking in public places. It does seem a little too restrictive. I say, if your gonna ban it in all public places, then why not just go and ban cigarettes themselves? Why beat around the bush, just end altogether.

The adverse health effects caused from smokers is a drop in the bucket compared to the cumulative negative effects of the noxious fumes that come from cars/trucks/SUV's, and smoke stacks from factories that all contribute to smog each and every day.  Are you saying that everyone who drives a car, or gets driven around in a car is a criminal too? Because that would probably include you as well. Get off your high horse...

The bars in Boston have been smoke free for a long time.  I think it's great.

And the law here is pretty fair.  If you own a cigar bar, or something along those lines that does a good percentage of business selling cigars and hookahs, then you can get permits to allow smoking.

There are no smoke-filled bars where I live. But there are smokers all over the place. I don't care how hard I try, it is impossible to avoid smokers completely. But that shouldn't be my burden. I shouldn't have to hide because you are intent on killing yourself.

I'll concede that smoking is "a drop in the bucket" compared to other forms of pollutants. But that isn't the point. Smoking is harmful in its own right, regardless of the harmful effects of other things. Should we cease prosecuting for petty theft because it is less harmful than armed robbery? Of course not. They are both harmful, and should thus both be dealt with.

[QUOTE="jealentus"]I highly doubt any of you have gottten sick off of somebody else's smoke. I personally don't smoke but I'm not a little whining baby about someone who does smoke. I was an asthmatic, I've grown out of it for the most part, but come on, smokers are voluntarily paying excise taxes which makes it cheaper for you non-smokers. Go cry.murlow12

I do smoke, just wanted to say I wish there were more ppl like you. I generally keep ppl like you in mind when I'm smoking and they don't like it. Kudo's for not treating smokers like some sort of criminal

The funny thing is, you smokers actually ARE criminals. You're harming yourselves and everyone around you. We know how bad it is, yet you continue to do it. I don't understand how people can be so ignorant...

Calling smokers ignorant is ignorant in its own right....
