TC, the point of Christianity is to follow in Jesus' footsteps, to walk alongside him. Not to praise him. Whether or not you are a good person is not in any way affected by who or what you praise, but by how you live your life.

In other words:

"All your belief cannot absolve your sin."

-Disturbed

harashawn

That's not what the Bible says.

"But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a fine house deserves more praise than the house itself." -Hebrews 3:3

I do not consider myself a good person. Maybe other people would, but I couldn't possibly think of myself as one. I have Jesus though. ~ de arimasu :P

Yes, I'm good enough.

Have I ever told a lie? Yes, I have lied, but not everyone is entitled to the truth because not everyone respects an honest person. They don't honor honesty. So there's a time and a place for the truth. The truth is earned therefore the truth is not always deserved.

Have I ever stolen anything? Yes, we all steal, but we don't consider it theft because they are items of insignificant value. BUT that doesn't change the fact that it's stealing.

Have I ever looked with lust? Of course.

Have I ever hated anyone? No, I have hobbies. I am not gonna give anyone the satisfaction they seek.

Have I ever used God's name in vain? Sure, but that's because I'm not a god-boy. Plus I don't agree with religious snobs. I've asked god to damn people and things. I have made reference to persons and things as condemed by god.

Yes, I consider myself a bad person but not by your standards.

From your list the only thing I haven't done is theft.

Maybe, but I consider it useless to judge myself or anyone according to those standards.

1: The Bible has no contradictions in its pages.Crushmaster
I lol'd. Here's just one. "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth." Then... "And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat."

Here's another.

EX 23:7 God prohibits the killing of the innocent.
NU 31:17-18, DT 7:2, JS 6:21-27, 7:19-26, 8:22-25, 10:20, 40, 11:8-15, 20, JG 11:30-39, 21:10-12, 1SA 15:3 God orders or approves the complete extermination of groups of people which include innocent women and/or children.

And here's one that contradicts what we know from the present day.

17And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

18They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Try picking up some snakes and drinking poison and see how true this passage of the Bible is.

After you answer that question, I ask that you would please answer these questions: Have you ever told a lie? Have you ever stolen anything? Have you ever looked with lust? Have you ever hated anyone? Have you ever used God's name in vain? Like as a swear word? After you answer these, I'll quote you and ask you a few more. I'll answer them along with you guys. God bless, Crushmaster.Crushmaster

Yes to all of those. And guess what? I'm still a good person. I don't care what god thinks.

That is the unfortunate truth about Crushmaster--it's almost as if his mind is immune to reason and logic. No matter how much research, factual information and sources you may present him, he'll always brush such aside and blindly praise his multi-millenia-old book.

I'll ignore the original post, as I don't think moral values should be based on a religion.

Anyhow, I'm sort of in between. I'm good in general, but I have done a few heartless things through my time. Necessity often don't agree with morals.

Yes, I do believe that I'm a good person...for reasons beyond your moralistic reasoning

Have you ever told a lie? Yes, you'd be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't told some form of lie

Have you ever stolen anything? Yes, and I feel horrible for it.

Have you ever looked with lust? More than likely, that's human nature, anyone who says they haven't is either too young or lying..if it helps there's love in that lust

Have you ever hated anyone? Hate is much too strong a word...I have deeply disliked people

Have you ever used God's name in vain? Like as a swear word? Of course.

Have you ever told a lie?

Yep.

Have you ever stolen anything?

Yeah.

Have you ever looked with lust?

Oh yes.

Have you ever hated anyone?

Yes.

Have you ever used God's name in vain? Like as a swear word?

Yes.

I don't see though, how this makes me such a bad person. I don't think I'm a bad person, but I know I'm not perfect, nobody is.

If god exists, may he strike me down now. If he does not do this, I will take this as evidence he does not exist and will fail to believe in him. If I don't believe in him, I go to hell. If god ignores this, he allows me to burn forever, something he could've prevented. Let's see what happens.

I'd just like to say if I published a document that's nothing but opinionated garbage and presumtions 10,000 years from now it will still be opinionated garbage and presumtions. It's age won't prove anything other than stupidity is eternal.

The bible intentionally contradicts itself because that which is right and that which is wrong is circumstantial. There's always a third path, the grey area. Sometimes Vengeance is necessary, as nature intended. Sometimes theft is necessary, to procure that which we need but we don't have.

It's impossible to be a bad person when your intentions are good. You could be misguided but that doesn't make you bad, just misguided. The gist is... don't judge people for what they say judge them for what they have done, but don't judge them for what they have done judge them by their intentions. Then it says don't judge others. I think this combination just confuses most people. It means don't go gangbusters on everyone and become prejudice nor quick to judge others.

If you look at most religious flyers they seem brainwashed. These fanatics tell you what is right a what is wrong. They have pre-answered True & False questions. The churches don't agree with each other so it seems they are all nutty enough to view their opinions in a True and false format.

To me, that sounds if it is speaking of making idols; or, idolatry. Worshipping them, in other words. They were not worshipping the Cherubims.

Those people were not as..."innocent" as you would think. They were pagan, heathen peoples in the land the Israelites had been promised. And in reference to two latter verses...
From what it appears to me, that was speaking of Apostles. Which, I might add, no longer exist. Paul, for example, was bitten by a snake (a viper, if I recall correctly) and lived through it without any damage.

Yes, you are correct, there are many unfulfilled prophecies. For example, many end times prophecies have yet to be answered; i.e. the revealing of the Anti-Christ.
Prove it. Funky_Llama

Certainly.

[QUOTE="cowboymonkey21"]Have you ever told a lie? Yes. Crushmaster

So, since you've told a lie, what does that make you? I suppose it makes me a liar.
Have you ever looked with lust? Yes.cowboymonkey21

The Bible says, "Ye have heard it said of men of old to not commit adultery. But I say unto you, whoever looks upon a woman, to lust after her, has committed adultery already with her in his heart."
When we look with lust, Cowboy, we are committing adultery according to God's Word. But to committed adultery one must have been committed.
Have you ever hated anyone? Yes. cowboymonkey21

The Bible says, "Whosoever hates his brother is a murderer."
When we hate, Cowboy, according to God's Word, are committing murder. I am not a murderer. Hate is different than murder.
Have you ever used God's name in vain? Yes. cowboymonkey21

The Bible commands us to honor God's name. When we use it in a inappropriate manner, we are committing blasphemy.I suppose so.

Thank you for your response, Cowboy. I appreciate you taking the time to go through these questions with me. Now for our conclusion...
According to God's Standard, the Ten Commandments, you are a lying, adulterous, murdering blasphemer.
Based on these answers, what do you think your eternal destiny is going to be? Heaven or hell?

I don't think either of them are real but if they were, I would go to Hell.

And does that concern you?

Not at all. As I said I don't believe either of them are real.

Because you didn't read this the first time:

TC, the point of Christianity is to follow in Jesus' footsteps, to walk alongside him. Not to praise him. Whether or not you are a good person is not in any way affected by who or what you praise, but by how you live your life.

In other words:

"All your belief cannot absolve your sin."

Where are you getting this from? We are to praise Him and I don't know why you would think we shouldn't.

I don't think we shouldn't praise him. But how can you follow Jesus if you're only praising him?

Ok I see your point now. But it's clear in scripture that Jesus is, in fact, the only way.

But Jesus didn't want to be praised.

harashawn

That doesn't mean we shouldn't praise Him, now does it?

Jesus came to Earth to be crucified. Did that mean we have to crucify him?

I'd just like to say if I published a document that's nothing but opinionated garbage and presumtions 10,000 years from now it will still be opinionated garbage and presumtions. It's age won't prove anything other than stupidity is eternal. MagnumPI

From your comments, it appears that you do not have an understanding of the Bible, the evidence that it is God's Word, or the power its words to change lives.

Of course your document would lack the power of the Bible because you are not God.

The bible intentionally contradicts itself because that which is right and that which is wrong is circumstantial. There's always a third path, the grey area. Sometimes Vengeance is necessary, as nature intended. Sometimes theft is necessary, to procure that which we need but we don't have. MagnumPI

You speak of moral relativism. Truth is not relative. The Bible is consistent in its revelation of God's higher moral law. Anything less than right, is wrong.

MagnumPI

The end does not justify the means. There are many examples one could give that will demonstrate that your logic, that intentions justify actions, is inconsistent with God's moral law and therefore wrong. .

If you look at most religious flyers they seem brainwashed. These fanatics tell you what is right a what is wrong. They have pre-answered True & False questions. The churches don't agree with each other so it seems they are all nutty enough to view their opinions in a True and false format. MagnumPI

There is no need to refer to Christians by derogatory names to make a point. The only source of spiritual truth is God's Word. Religions are man's attempt to reach up to God. Biblical Christianity is God reaching down to fallen man, offering in love, a path of salvation and forgiveness in Christ. Our opinions do not determine truth. God's Word is truth.

Has the "are you a good person" spiel ever really convinced anyone ever? It really is the most obnoxious way of evangelising.

I know  Any form of argument in which you call the other person a liar is not going to get the other person on your side.
