Tipping culture is absurd, though I still tip just because it's the norm and you receive better service for tipping well. Though my personal opinion is that tipping is nonsensical, why should I tip them for a service that they are being paid for already? I don't get tips at my job and I probably work harder and I have no doubt a lot more responsibility. Im_single

Again, you're not paying for the service. You're paying for the food. You pay for the service with your tip.

[QUOTE="testfactor888"]10 percent is a perfectly viable tip but apparently you want to put someone down for it. People make me sick when they act like how you are about tips. You aren't entitled to them just for working the job you have to provide good service. I am sure you diden't provide terrible service to these people who gave you fantastic tips and in the long run you earned that money more than likelyJandurin
dude um... they pay 2 bucks an hour. if you don't make 15 percent per table then you're making like minimum wage. what the ****

In Murica' land of the free maybe. Every other sane country pays at least minimum wage for waiters/waitresses before tips.

Waiters shouldn't make less than minimum wage - that employers are legally allowed to pay them $2 an hour an expect tips to make up the difference is ridiculous. It's like food service-based prostitution.

I don't really use either. I'm happy to tip restraunts, if i get good servce, on the rare occasions i go but annoying all the people i've been with then force me to take back my money or consider it as me paying for them and then they pay some pitiful tip between them. If i get good service on a meal then i'ld be happy to round up to the nearest fiver or perhaps chuck on a couple extra quid which i think would work out at about 15%ish on average.

Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.

I sound angry? And by what, pray tell, do you base that on?

Your use of the "damn comments" part of your post. To add damn to it makes it seem like you are getting all upset. Perhaps you should relax as I think you are taking an internet forum far to seriously. Its just a way to waste time for me, around 85 percent of what I post should just be blown off.

I'm perfectly calm. Honestly I cuss like a sailor. That's just how I roll. It's really awesome, however, that you get on my case for "prejudging" you, yet you presume to know what my mood is based on nothing of any consequence whatsoever.

This would be a huge part of the truth of the mattertestfactor888

If you can't afford a tip then I don't see how you can afford to eat at a restaraunt or order delivery food. If you're that poor then take that money and go to the store where you can get enough food to make a few meals.

Don't tell me how to spend my money. I eat out maybe once every 2-3 months and on average I use the money I have to get as much food as possible since its my "treat". If I can't afford a tip sucks for them but I don't care

You can afford to buy as much food as you can possibly eat, but can't afford a few dollars for a tip?

Didn't read through the entire thread... but, FYI to anyone out there who doesn't tip; there are far, far worse things that have been done too food than spitting in it.

I knew a guy who used to add cheese (as he called it) to the food by scratching skin flakes off of his crotch.

Fair enough if you live somewhere where waiters are actually paid a descent wage. However that is not the case here in the States, where "tipping culture" is the norm. There's a reason why that is the norm and it's because the waiters are not being paid for the service except via your tip.

A little man chowder in the bechemel sauce, or fecal matter in the curry. I've had friends who relayed disgusting stories too - enough that there are very few places I'll actually order food from. It's amazing how immature people can be.

Of course it matters, from what I understand, the waiters there for example aren't paid minimum wage and rely on tips to make up for that. Then you have the cultural implications for the matter.

Well, yes I do live in the US, BUT how do you expexte me to tip them anyways when Im poor and I dont have a job, yet they do? Atleast I bought something from them and they are getting my $$$ anyways, I wish I had a job :(

Still haven't seen anyone else touch on the glaring inconsistency in US tipping culture; some service people arbitrarily get tipped while others don't.

Why doesn't the great phone CSR deserve tips? Why doesn't the oil change guy who does a great job cleaning the car out get a tip?

There are so many examples of this, and I myself have experienced it in jobs I've had. We only tip certain positions because of very old cultural traditions, not because the tips are only deserved by waiters, bartenders and delivery people.

If you can do it yourself, and aren't willing to pay others to do it, then do it yourself.

But after you get someone to do it for you, then they deserve to get paid for it.

I'll second this. Minimum wage is nothing, it's impossible to live off it. How is someone going to make rent, car payments/insurance, and health insurance payments off of minimum wage? That's not even including food and other amenities.

Yeah, bank tellers, mechanics, grocery store clerks (and baggers), plumbers, electricians, and tons of other services that are just as common or more important than the food service industry, and no one expects tips there.

in the better parts of the US (that is, areas where the average cost of living is lower) you can scrape by on $8 / hr. expect to live in a crappy roach infested apt, living off of sandwiches and ramen with nothing but the most basic of necessities. you MIGHT have a mode of transportation to drive the 10-30 miles to work, but expect to be clinging on to every spare cent for the day that a belt goes out or you need a new alternator on your dying car. don't bother even thinking about asking for nice gifts on christmas or your birthday because your home WILL be robbed within 6 months.

I have worked and worked many of the jobs people feel entitled to receive tips at. I still don't think tips should just be handed out to people for doing shoddy work

I once went to collect an Indian after ordering over the phone and paid with a note. The guy gave me my change on one of those silver trays as if expecting a tip. I thought 'for what?' You haven't done anything - I'm paying for the food, I'm collecting the delivery I'm not going to pay you extra for taking my money. When I got the delivery home I noticed some of the lids caved in and the popadoms were just crammed in and crushed. I'm sure he did it deliberately. Still, its their loss. I used to spend quite a bit of money down there about once a month or so and now I don't go there any more.

I'll tip a waiter if they do a good job and attend the table properly but very rarely tip delivery guys because I've already paid for the service and that's the service they offer. I also always check the price over the phone after I once caught a delivery guy trying to claim the order was £3 more than it actually was. I just think of it like this - what calibre of person works as a fast food delivery person? Although I'd like to think differently experience tells me they can't be trusted.

I also tip the paperboy and mail man at Christmas. They deserve a tip more than some punk from a fast food joint with a moped.

Touche :) Your right I am the pot calling the kettle black in this case sorry

Still haven't seen anyone else touch on the glaring inconsistency in US tipping culture; some service people arbitrarily get tipped while others don't.

Why doesn't the great phone CSR deserve tips? Why doesn't the oil change guy who does a great job cleaning the car out get a tip?

There are so many examples of this, and I myself have experienced it in jobs I've had. We only tip certain positions because of very old cultural traditions, not because the tips are only deserved by waiters, bartenders and delivery people.

superfluidity

The guy changing your oil is getting paid quite well. The waiter isn't. Also with the oil change you're paying for both the goods and the service. With the restraunt you're only paying for the good, not the service. You pay for the service with your tip.

Yeah, bank tellers, mechanics, grocery store clerks (and baggers), plumbers, electricians, and tons of other services that are just as common or more important than the food service industry, and no one expects tips there.

They don't make less than minimum wage now do they?

[QUOTE="testfactor888"][QUOTE="Jandurin"] dude um... they pay 2 bucks an hour. if you don't make 15 percent per table then you're making like minimum wage. what the ****harashawn
Minimum wage is enough to live off of and I am sure you make more than that on average.

It's not even close to enough to live off.

Yep it is but it depends on the location you are living in as well. In California I would imagine it would be tough. In the town I am living in it can be more than enough.

I have had over 20 jobs. Working at 3 different delis (Schlotskys, Atlanta Bread Company, Panera Bread). Also I have worked at McDonalds, Del Taco, & Burger King. I also have worked as a manager at a CVS Pharmacy and a dishwasher at a casino restaurant. I have also worked at movie theaters and video rental stores. I have also worked at grocery stores and many other random jobs such as one job where I was digging holes for the For Sale signs in front of houses. I have worked and worked many of the jobs people feel entitled to receive tips at. I still don't think tips should just be handed out to people for doing shoddy worktestfactor888
I bet you didn't get tipped well :3 [QUOTE="Baconbits2004"]

That's just the thing though. You'll never see it mixed with the seasonings of the steak, or notice there's a little extra in with your gravy.

He might be an odd case though, this guy was disappointed that his wife threw away his sons umbilical cord, because he had 'plans' for it.

ew glad no one I ever worked with was um dirty. Even the one thing done by someone I know (not during my shift) was still using food.

Didn't read through the entire thread... but, FYI to anyone out there who doesn't tip; there are far, far worse things that have been done too food than spitting in it.

I knew a guy who used to add cheese (as he called it) to the food by scratching skin flakes off of his crotch.

DJ_Lae

A little man chowder in the bechemel sauce, or fecal matter in the curry. I've had friends who relayed disgusting stories too - enough that there are very few places I'll actually order food from. It's amazing how immature people can be.

Personally, I don't see that as even a viable reason to tip waiters. Sure...people should tip waiters. That's simply not the reason why.

Way I see it, anyone willing to do something so vile and criminal just because they got stiffed a few bucks, is a horrible person anyway. Someone who's that ****ing mean and disgusting is gonna do it if they want to. If they want to defile your food, they'll think of a reason regardless.

[QUOTE="DJ_Lae"]Waiters shouldn't make less than minimum wage - that employers are legally allowed to pay them $2 an hour an expect tips to make up the difference is ridiculous. It's like food service-based prostitution.

Yeah, I agree with this. Though, I haven't heard the rationale as to why it's allowed by law. Anyone care to fill me in?

I refuse to tip just because its the norm unless they provide above "norm" service

2 dollars an hour 2 dollars an hour get it through head

They can find another job, they can get a job that pays better, get it through your head

That is such a lame argument. SOMEONE has to work in the service industry, you can't just tell everyone "yeah, well deal with it, get another job". Do you want nobody to work in that industry?!

in the better parts of the US (that is, areas where the average cost of living is lower) you can scrape by on $8 / hr. expect to live in a crappy roach infested apt, living off of sandwiches and ramen with nothing but the most basic of necessities. you MIGHT have a mode of transportation to drive the 10-30 miles to work, but expect to be clinging on to every spare cent for the day that a belt goes out or you need a new alternator on your dying car. don't bother even thinking about asking for nice gifts on christmas or your birthday because your home WILL be robbed within 6 months.

This is actually pretty much the truth as its the way I lived for a couple years a couple years ago. Was living in some apartments near the worst part of Henderson NV. Not like you care but it was near this road called Center Street where most of the drug related crime took place. It was still living though it wasn't living in luxury

I've also worked as a grocery store clerk, made about the same per hour and recieved no tips.

There are so many examples like this that show how are tipping culture is completely irrational and based on old traditions rather than merit.

well the good thing is, working as a waiter in DC suburbs or in DC means you're near money so people will tip. I can't imagine living somewhere where 7 bucks an hour would be enough for an adult. NOW living with your parents, minimum wage is great.

The CSR has the cost of service included as part of the regular wage. When you get your oil changed, the service is already accounted for and is included as part of your bill.

That's NOT the case with waiters (in most cases).

Yeah. If you make less than minimum wage they are legally bound to fulfill your failed wages. But really they just fire you afterwards. Pretty much.

Oh, it wasn't meant as an excuse for not tipping, just some horror stories I've heard. And yeah, doing that sort of thing is criminal.

it really depended on my mood of the day. Sometimes I would be in a great mood and give amazing service and get tipped well and other days I would not do a very good job and not make very good tips. Its the nature of a tipping job. The best day I ever had at a job was when I worked as a courtesy clerk around 9 years ago at a Smiths grocery store (owned by Kroger). It was the day before Thanksgiving and I stood outside and everybody who came out I grabbed their cart and helped them to their car. I ended up making around 100 dollars in 3 hours in tips for doing that. Was kinda conning people though as they diden't ask for help but I did need alcohol money

If I recall correct, delivery men made about 5 when the minimum wage was 5.75 at papa johns, but at dominoes they actually made minimum wage? so it depends ALL waiters make under minimum wage unless they have multiple positions AFAIK. I made 4.50 an hour as a lunchtime waiter because they expected less tips during that time.
