[QUOTE="FragStains"][QUOTE="sonicare"] That's my thoughts. If I don't want to pay the delivery tip, I pick it up. If I want the convenience of having it delivered to me, then I will have to pay more for that. Simple concept.sonicare
Here's a question: Some places charge a 'delivery fee'...does that not cover the convenience of being delivered to? Am I obligated to subsidize the delivery person specifically? I pay for the food. I pay for the delivery (as the restaurant has established). What further responsibility do I have?

I've had that as well. If they charge a delivery fee, then usually you don't need to tip.

It is now $2.50 to deliver a pizza to my house from the chain near me. I asked the guy if he gets any of that and he said that he gets half. A guy from another chain told me he gets nothing from that fee so I never know what to do. I usually give 10% though anyway, which I guess people tell me is really low for delivery.

I've given nothing several times, but it was deserved. I generally tip 15%, but some days I'm better with math than others.

Jandurin

I was with someone who gave nothing, but I totally agreed at that time. I think we had to get the bill from the manager lol (that of course being on top of everything else).

Rest assured, I don't give nothing without having a good reason. I was in a restaurant once with my mother and the place was empty except for us and an old man having coffee. Our waiter took about 45 minutes to come out and ask what we wanted. The food took forever to come out (which isn't her fault... probably). She didn't refill our drinks once, and we eventually had to go up front to request our bill and pay because we didn't see her again after she brought us our food. That's a 0% for me.

We did walk on a bill once. -at a bar, watching a fight, ate, drinks, etc. No service for last hour of fights, waited another 30 min after fights, still nothing, said **** it, and left

When I did deliveries for the local shop, I got paid minimum wage, and I got $.60 of the $2.50 delivery fee. I relied on tips to make it worth my while.

Well I was, but I'll just use it over there instead.

Pretty much don't like you either. I really don't see what people get out of making fun of others. There are quite a few jerks on this site, as there are anywhere else on the internet and in real life, but what can you do? You're so much of an antagonizer that you'd go out of your way to put someone's quote into your signature just to poke fun at them? Really, don't you think that's quite a bit lame? Let me guess, you'll reply with some half-ass witty remark to attempt to poke even more fun at me. I seriously don't like people like you. I just don't understand your parasitic personalities. All you is feed off of other's. Pathetic.

I love you BlueRay. Let's run off together.

My point of view is that if the place designates $2.50 to deliver my pizza, why am I responsible for anything on top of that? I understand that the delivery person may or may not see anything from that fee, but, to be blunt, that's between him and the employer. Not me. I paid for the service. If the restaurant wants to give it's drivers more money from the delivery, then charge a higher delivery rate. Or don't and I'll tip the guy personally. It's not like I tip the FedEx guy after I've already paid shipping costs.

Most people just rounded up. If it was a $13.00 order, they'd give me $15 and tell me to keep the change. I'd say the average was somewhere between $1.50 and $5.00 depending on how much I was delivering. Businesses usually tipped more.

I could make around 2-4 deliveries in an hour on a busy day, so I usually did pretty good, even after I tipped the people in the kitchen.

At restaurants, of course. Most of the money waiters/waitresses make is through tips because their hourly wages are incredibly low. Delivery men? No. They get paid a decent salary to do their jobs.

I tip 15% or so in restaurants and I don't get delivery often. When I lived in the dorms I could order pizzas on my school meal plan so if I wanted to tip him I'd have to get money in addition to my student ID. I don't feel bad for not tipping since it was literally across the street. It seems lazy to order delivery across the street but the school only allowed meal plan points to be used for delivery and only at a single place. It was complete idiocy.

[QUOTE="BluRayHiDef"]

Here's an idea, why not just pay waiters and deliverymen the same way other types of employees are paid?

BluRayHiDef

that's fine, but then your chinese food would have been 8.97$.

Fine. My point is that waiters and deliveryman should be paid just like any other employee, by their EMPLOYER from the business' budget and profits. It's stupid to rely on the customer to pick up on the business' slack. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

Fine, as long as you're happy with that restaurant just plain not existing.

As I said before, restaurants generally don't made an assload of profits. Most new restaurants fail within the first few years, and in some cases a single bad weekend can run a business into the ground.

And since we've already established that incorporating the "tip" into the price of food is just gonna make some people not dine there, think about that. Before it was just the waiters getting screwed. At least the restaurant was making sales. Now people aren't buying ANYTHING. Everyone at the restaurant suffers, from the dishwashers to the managers. And the restaurant closes. Meaning that customers who want to eat there can no longer do so.

I tend to tip pretty generously and at places I order routinely from (local pizza place, Thai place, Indian restaurant), my food arrives REALLY quickly, so I suspect a correlation.

If service is satisfactory, then of course. If I have something delivered to my house and it takes over an hour and the foods cold or something, then I won't tip. If I have a waiter/waitress who's a jerk and doesn't care about my service or what I ask for, then I won't tip.

Just as they remember bad tippers. Funny enough I was just chatting yesterday with my cousin, who manages a restaraunt. He was telling me about one repeat customer they have who never tips. At this point the guy has stiffed just about every waiter who works there, so nobody was willing to wait on him. My cousin understood where they were coming from (having once been a waiter himself) and decided that he would wait on the guy himself. But he decides to be pretty lazy in doing so. The customer threatened to talk to the manager, at which point my cousin informed the guy that he was the manager. The customer complained about the service he was getting then ("this place is usually pretty good") and my cousin told him "poor tippers get poor service". You might not like it folks, but that's how it is. If you get good service then give a good tip. If you don't want to tip then don't use the service.

When you're at a restaurant or receive food via delivery, do you tip the waiter or delivery man? I've never been in a situation where I had to personally tip a waiter. However, I've had numerous occasions where I've had the choice of tipping the delivery man. For example, last night while working at my college's fitness center, I ordered some Chinese food; steamed vegetables with white rice. The total came up to $6.97. I gave the delivery man a $10 bill and he reluctantly went into his wallet and gave me the change; it's as if he was waiting for me to say keep the change. After he gave it to me, as he was walking off he said You're so f***** cheap! I lol'ed and walked back inside. I just wanted to spend as little money as possible. I'm pretty sure that he got paid by the Chinese restaurant. Why should I have to pay extra money? Anyhow, I recall how apart from the exact change he gave me, there was no money in his wallet. This seemed way to convenient, as if he intentionally removed the rest of his money to give the impression that he was broke. He didn't fool me.

BluRayHiDef
If you wanted to spend as little as possible, you should have gotten off of your ass and gone to get it yourself. Seriously, how the hell would you feel if you drove miles in an old dumpy car just to deliver a guy some food, a guy who won't appreciate your efforts enough to tip you a few bloody dollars for your work? You wouldn't feel, that's how you would feel. In a job like that you're relying on the money you get from tips since you aren't getting paid very much to begin with. Coincidentally, the people (like you) who don't tip, don't get good service. Next time that guy sees he is delivering to you, he'll take his time or jostle the food around, just to spite you because you wouldn't give the poor man a few dollars for delivering the food you were too lazy to go get yourself. Tipping is pretty beneficial to you as well. When you tip, the deliverymen will like you. You'll get your food faster. I have a pizza place a little while away from my house, and the delivery people know that I tip well, so I get my food fast. I seriously hope you find yourself in a profession like that one day, where you're depending on tips to get a worthwhile amount of money, and some ungrateful person like you denies him a tip. Or the next time you order Chinese or whatever it comes to you cold.

I worked as a waitress for a while. I feel obligated to tip. The only time I did not tip is when the waitress was just horrible, and then I felt really bad about it.

I try to tip rather well when I am paying for something. I feel rather bad if I don't when someone does a service for me. What they're doing is a thankless job and they're doing the job because they aren't well off so I just feel like I am taking advantage of them.

I tip about 10% of my final bill to the waiter. After watching the beginning of Reservoir Dogs I stopped tipping as much. And the only deliveryman I give tips to is the pizza guy and again it's about 10%.

I'll always tip at restaurants, but it might not be much, just a token gesture. People earn tips by going above and beyond what their job is. If a delivery person is polite, smiles, and doesn't act harried, I'll try to give them a larger bill when I tell them, keep the change. At a restaurant, a waiter or waitress's job is to take my order, and bring me food. If they go beyond that, eg: smiling, making conversation, just in general being polite and sociable, then that means a much larger tip. Even at somewhere like Subway, if I find myself enjoying a brief conversation with the person behind the counter, then okay, I'll tip (provided the debit machine prompts me to do so.)

Well without bringing up the same stuff he says. I just don't feel like waiters, especially in my state deserve extra money for doing their job. It didn't stop me tipping completely but I just don't give as much as I use to tip.

Either my question wasn't clear enough, or you misunderstood.

What I'm asking is, why did you decide to start tipping less after watching Reservoir Dogs?

I tip the waiter 15-20% if they did their job, 0 - 1 cent if they didn't. The delivery person... they never stick around, nor do I have money on hand when I'm walking half asleep to my front door, so they go tipless. Oh, (upon reading your post..) you mean the food delivery, they count as waiters.

I sometimes tip the waiter if the service is great. The deliveryman on the other hand gets nothing. Not that it is expected here to tip your deliveryman here. You already pay for it to be delivered to your house, why should I tip, when I have already paid for the service? :|

If folks are too cheap to tip, then they should make their own damn food. Simple as that.

I always give them a dollar at least. I don't want to be a scrooge. Besides if you go thereoften and don't tip them you won't insure prompt service. Isn't that what tips are all about?Service insurance?
