Why is this even news? Thats what emos do, kill themselves.

xbox3604lyf

Scene people don't kill themselves. One's clothing style and music tastes has absolutely NOTHING to do with their personality. It doesn't mean they kill themselves or are even depressed. Stop judging people.

Truth_Seekr

Genre's of music kill themselves?

I think you know what he means by emos. Don't act dumb more than you're pretending to be so far in the thread.

I only know the real definition of emo...a genre of music and also a style of clothing. That's what it is. look it up.

People who hurt themselves are referred to as "Scene", people who listen to emo music are not "emo" themselves.

and you expect people to know that for your comfort and understanding? you need to relax if the story and comments in here offend you or "get to you" because of a little discrepancy in terminology. I doubt anyone's trying to do that.

It isn't "getting to me" I just don't like people using improper terms.

your annoying.

The word emo has come to mean what you call a "scene" person...

Hide behind your ****ing dictionary while the rest of us change with life and the times...

Why can't people just use the proper term?

Why am I even paying attention to a dumb article in a tabloid newspaper?

Precisely what I was wondering. Seems like you're frustrating yourself.

You should've posted the entire article:

Hannah Bond, 13, hanged herself from a bunk bed in her bedroom with a tie believing her death would impress fellow followers of the "emo" movement, it was said.

The teenager, who left a suicide note and used the nickname "Living Disaster", committed suicide after flippantly telling her parents, "I want to kill myself", when she returned late from a friend's house.

They dismissed the comment and said "don't be silly" but an hour later found her suspended an inch from the floor.

They dialled 999 and paramedics battled for over an hour to save her but she had lost consciousness and died.

Roger Sykes, the coroner who recorded a verdict of suicide, found aspects of the youth movement, which began in America, "very disturbing".

He said: "A girl of 13 years old has taken her own life for no reason that by anyone could be found to be justifiable.

"It is a terrible and tragic explanation to what happened. It is not glamorous, just simply a tragic loss of such a young life."

Maidstone Coroners' Court heard that Hannah, of East Peckham, Kent, had lived a double life, outwardly a bright fun-loving family-orientated schoolgirl, but inwardly a devotee of "emo" which stands for emotional.

She had secretly chatted to "emo" followers online all over the world, talking about death and the glamorisation of hanging and speaking about "the black parade" - a place where "emos" believe they go after they die.

She had even scratched her wrists in a form of self-harm often seen as a form of initiation into the popular fashion and lifestyle fad followed by young people who dress in black like their older "Goth" crowd.

On her page on Bebo, the online networking site, she told friends with names like Sam Suicide, that she was obsessed with the American band My Chemical Romance, who hit number one with their last album The Black Parade.

In a tribute book dedicated to Hannah at her school, one of her friends wrote, "I hope you enjoy the black parade", and it emerged another "emo" girl at Hannah's school, Mascalls Secondary School in Paddock Wood, Kent, had tried to kill herself a year ago.

Her mother Heather, a housewife, told the court how she originally thought "emo" was a harmless youth movement.

She said: "She called emo a fashion and I thought it was normal. I didn't know about the cuts. She used to wear Emo bracelets so her wrists were concealed.

"Hannah was just a normal girl. She had loads of friends. She could be a bit moody but I thought it was just because she was a teenager. In the months before she had become obsessed with the internet.

"But there were no signs this was going to happen. She had everything to live for."

Her father Raymond, a martial arts instructor who broke down as he gave evidence, said he had noticed the marks on her wrist.

He said: "We discussed it when I noticed the marks. When I was younger I was a punk and we used to do tattoos and things, but I wasn't angry with her because she promised me she would never do it again.

"Although she was in touch with emos all over the world, particularly in America, she was still in touch with the same girl she always was.

"The night before she died she came into my room and gave me a kiss on the cheek and said 'I love you dad.'"

Vanessa Everett, her headteacher, told the inquest that none of her teachers felt she had any issues.

"She was a popular and bright girl who had achieved merits day in and day out right up until the day of her death," she said.

She said they had been aware of "superficial self-harm" among younger students who had joined the emo clan, but said it was difficult to determine those intent on harming themselves and those using it as "a fashion statement."

What is 'emo'?

Emo, which stands for "emotional, is a youth movement based around dark music, dark clothing and a dark view of the world.

It was pioneered in America and emo followers adhere to a host of cult-like conventions to demonstrate dedication to this new wave of pop music and lifestyle.

The emo brand of music sounds much like indie or rock, but it takes its unique name from the emotional lyrics and melancholy themes.

One of the forerunners of this genre is the band My Chemical Romance from New Jersey, America.

While most fans simply enjoy the music and dress, others take their fascination to a sinister level.

They indulge in self-harming and become obsessed with death and suicide.News

Amazing journalism to be had here.

No. Goths don't 'usually commit suicide'. It's because they like that clothing style. That's it. Since when has someones clothing style classify ANYTHING about someones personality?

Never. Sorry.

I just posted it cause it's awful that a kid would do that to herself, however it seems like the article is attributing the death to being Emo and that's where you seem to be a bit frustrated, even though you say you're not, yet you're adamant on something so simple as a word. You need to pack one and relax

I read the rest, but that was the only question that you asked, so I answered it. Yes, I have cut myself. I have been diagnosed with depression by two doctors, I tried to kill myself once, but guess what dude...I don't wear dark clothes, I don't "cut myself" on a regular basis, I don't listen to emo music, I don't like sterotyping.

Wow..I lose my respect for people that commit suicide..Its side but I have no sympathyhonkyjoe

I would say I have no sympathy for Adolf Hitler I would say I have no sympathy for Saddam Hussein. I would say I have no sympathy for anyone I kill while defending myself or the righteous. But to say you have no sympathy for someone that commits suicide just to be condescending earns you some sympathy.

Some people are just dysfunctional while others think too much. Did you ever think that maybe you have just been too busy playing with your gadgets to see life for what it is really worth? Not much. Your happy because you enjoy the fantasies that you burry yourself in. Your movies and your video games.

As adults we stay alive because we have jobs and hobbies to keep ourselves occupied. We realize that we just drift through our existence day to day with no real purpose, no importance, but our sense of duty to our families keeps us going.

I just can't imagine a 13 year old kid commiting suicide. Teenagers don't live in reality. They just drift through television, music and movies. Usually teenagers hang theirselves because they are trying to get a rush from the deprivation, the fatality is unintentional. I wouldn't say accidental because if you're hanging yourself fatality is an obvious risk. So I say unintentional.

But whatever. Why she did it doesn't really matter. I've felt like killing myself plenty of days, but I'm still alive. Killing yourself won't fix anything and there really is no point because NOBODY will care. And if they do... only for about a week. We're not gonna live forever anyway. Life sux then you die. That's just the way it is. Life would be much better if we were all retarded, but unfortunately we haven't been given that luxery.

Life is pointless. There is no point. But if you look it at as enigma you can spend an entire lifetime trying to find the answers. Which you never will because you're not looking for the simple answer you are looking for the answer you want. But who cares? It's something to keep you busy.

Many people adopt religion for this same reason. They just simply need something to believe. They know it's BS, but without a dream there is no faith.

Becuase I like people to use proper english...is that so difficult? I'm not jewish, but if you start bashing them, I'll defend them too.blackngold29

The fact is by general acceptance the term emo is used for this specific type of person. It's pretty much how new words work themselves into the language or simply take on new meanings. Whether you care or not is irrelevant.

All crappy sources, but frankly Emo itself is a slang term so there is no rooted meaning other than what the majority defines for it.

Mmm seems like a gross emo sterotype, although i don't know much about emos (emoism???) but i don't see every emo on the street with cuts on their arms and hanging from a shop window.

The first was not a "legit" source, and the second and third said that it is a music genre...not too sure what you were getting at there.

"Emo" as a music genre and "emo" as a subculture are two unrelated things. The music genre of "emo" is rooted in hardcore punk, and is therefore a part of the hardcore punk subculture. "Emo" as a subculture on its own is rooted in the oppressed angst of pissy-eyed teens and Gerard Way.

" As a result, the term "emo" became a vaguely defined identifier rather than a specific genre of music." Wiki

"over-excitable:given to excessive displays of emotion ( informal ) " MSN

The first source is as legit as any other, frankly.

What I'm getting at is that words, especially words that are already ill defined, have the tendency to take on new meanings. In this case Emo is both a ****of music and an identifier for a type of person. This is based on common perception, which has led to the idea that emo is a st-yle a person may adopt.

how is the first one not a legit source? urban dictionary gives the proper definitions(plural) for almost all slang words in the english language. the definition for emo has broadened to more then just a genre of music.

That's really too bad, but I'm willing to bet there was a lot more to her suicide than trying to be "more emo". That a journalist would report the story in this fashion seems really irresponsible to me.

I have NEVER understood why people want to harm themselves or commit suicide. What really bothers me about it is that (at my school and college at least) the people who DO self harm are middle class and white. What reason do they have to 'end it all'? People like this need to put their lives in perspective; it's not like they live in a poverty stricken country fighting to survive (parts of Africa) and it's not like they are abused by their parents(like that woman and her children in Austria recently). It may sound harsh and heartless, but hey judge me as you will...

Oh yea and where I come from 'Emo' is used in reference to people who cut themselves/self harm. Words gain new meanings its called 'Broadening' - its part of the endless cycle of language change...

It's sad, but the article is HILARIOUS:

"The Emo phenomenon began in the U.S. in the 1980s. It is a largely teenage trend and is characterised by depression, self-injury and suicide.

Followers wear tight jeans with studded belts and wristbands. Their hair is dyed black and worn in long fringes to obscure their faces.

Emo - from the word emotional - is a reference to the angst-filled lyrics and melancholy themes of the rock music central to the culture.

One of the foremost of these "suicide cult" bands is My Chemical Romance, from New Jersey.

Their first single, Welcome to the Black Parade, from the album The Black Parade, was released in 2006 and became a huge hit, going to number one in Britain.

The concept album follows the story of a character called The Patient, who dies of cancer.

The Black Parade is a nickname for the place where Emo fans believe they will go when they die."
