Under the Abbasids they were one (even under the Umayyad), except for Al-Andalus which was under the Umayyads when the Abbasids took over.

please check out this book, i read it in high school , a real eyeopener.

and yes the mongols were brutal, but they were remarkably less so then the rest of the world.

for example torture was extremely taboo in their religion, as was most forms of bloodshed. which is why they relied on the bow , as to see or touch blood in mongol culture was considered highly disgusting.
