I can see people saying the US out of Patriotism, but apart from that well, all other reasons fall flat.
I'll have to go with the Antarctic Empire.

[QUOTE="CrimzonTide"]If I had to pick one, the Mongol Empire. Rome and Britain aren't too far behind though.RoyWilsonUnder what basis? I do not consider size and ability to conquer "greatness". But that is only my opinion, of course.
Blasphemy. THIS IS CANADAAAAAAA!
The United States, just because of the succesful use of democracy and the advances in technology we have made over the years, not to mention the moon landing.
Second is without a doubt the Roman Empire, i'll actually tie it with the US because of the changes they made to the ancient and modern world.

Greece had democracy, woamns rights, plumbing, great advances in math... and so much more. darkslider99
Depends on which Greek city...the Athenians treated their women like dirt, and the Spartans gave them everything short of the right to join the military, but no one was actually allowed to vote. There were women's rights before Greece, just not as many as in Sparta.
And no one said America was the first democracy, they said it was the first Constitutional democracy. ;)
How so? This goes out to all Americans. Not to start a flame war, but what are your reasoning? Do you have any? or is it just blind patrionism?darkslider99
The US is considered the best for many reasons, if partly because of our cultural hegemony. Greece never had that - it's culture spread after it died, and mostly through the Romans.
it would have to be america. weve accomplished more than any nation before us ragardless of time period.
although were hitting a bit of decline... mostly due to socialist ideals getting in the way of common sense but thats a whole different story.
[QUOTE="Conanfan1"]America. Easily.darkslider99
I have to agree with this. Blind patriotism seems to dominate most of the posters opinions. America post WW2 was the only country not destroyed by the war for two main reasons. The first being that it's thousands of miles from where the war took place, and second being that it didn't even join the war until 1942!
Democracy is not an American creation, nor where they the first to put it to good use. Can you even consider it good use? Come to think of it, the government seems corrupt and society seems ruled by commercialism.
Yes, it's the most powerful super power in the world, but it's also heavily, heavily in debt! I think any country with its resources could have made the achievements that America did, possibly to a greater, more efficient degree.
Not the United States, by an incredible long shot. I'll say the golden age of Greece. They had very smart people dictating their society and creating new ideas. The same can't be said for the United States.bman784
Are you kidding? Bush is clearly a modern day descendant of Socrates.

We were to busy taming polar bears to ride for our version of rodeos and training penguins to be the rodeo clowns. Not to mention building igloos is a time consuming process. We are still working on our igloo missile silos and iceberg ships.
