How come killing animals is more ok than humans?

I can understand for meat but otherwise how come killing or mistreating an animal doesn't give you close to as much legal punishment as killing or mistreating a human??
It should be the other way around really. You should get harsher penalties cause 1 they're totally innocent and not evil 2 it's much harder to find out about animal cruelty so it should be harsher penalties as deterrence.

Eating meat is fine.

But the treatment of animals in order to eat said meat is abhorrent and everyone knows it. But people want to eat what they like so morals can go f*ck themselves.
