How do I cope? Easy. Life is great. Things couldn't be any better. Other then some debt I have from college things are great on my end. The news tries to make things look really bad because thats how they raise ratings. Fear mongering. The biggest problem I have is that I need a new car.

a universe without an intervening creator is far more elegant and beautiful, and a lot more hopeful.  We have each other, friends and family.

I don't know how people cope with the idea of a higher power, when the world is full of such terrible things.

First step is realizing the world isn't miserable and getting a better attitude, kiddo.

You should do yourself a favor. Log out of gamespot until you are over 18 years of age. You know, an actual adult. Then, you can come back here and actually try to have a conversation with the grown ups, son.

Oh I bet. I bet its also more beautiful believing that when they pass away someday, they just rot in the ground. Yeah, having no creator is great, isn't it?

Look. Anyone that claims that this world isn't miserable is either a complete shut in, have lived under a rock for most of their life, or chooses to be self ignorant. He deserved that response. People need to be educated on what life is really like around them,

Kind of hard to do that when everywhere you look, media, magazines, papers, its always something so damn depressing. Also, if there is no creator, kind of hard to be positive when in life you will see loved ones passing away and possibly NEVER seeing them again if there is no creator. Its IMPOSSIBLE to be positive in a world where greed is rampant, cost of everything is going up, gas is becoming unaffordable and our leaders are psychopaths and corrupt. Face it, there IS no hope.

No kidding, the world is full of bad things. But, if you focus on bad things its all you will see. Open up your mind, and look at the splendor around you and then realize how amazing it is that we get to experience life. Accept the world for what it is, and try and find your own peace.

Probably because bad news sells, case in point you. Think about all the good times you've had with loved ones, even if there is a creator/afterlife you aren't guaranteed to see them again. Its possible if you stop focusing on the negatives. Fact is there is plenty of hope, even if you try to stop other people from having hope.

Each day that flys by, how do you cope with all of the misery that this world brings. All that you hear in the news is some man killing his wife, gang killings, some maniac going postal killing dozens of people, bombings etc. Each day that goes by, I wonder that if there is truly no creator (I'm agnostic I guess) then whats the point in it all. I guess if there is no higher power, then there is technically no point and that we are evolutionary organisms.

Sometimes people wonder why I'm not goal oriented or ambitious, I just say whats the point. We are doomed to kill ourselves through nuclear weapons anyway. Our history is dark. The holocaust, purpopsely injecting diseases in african americans long ago, intentionally letting radiation out onto a city just for an experiment to see what it does, it just makes everything so...hopeless.

I've heard people say "You don't need a creator, just give yourself purpose". Sorry. For me that doesn't work. I can't put myself into self ignorance that way. That would be me trying to rationalize that I'm special. I'm not and if there is no creator, then no one is. I realize nobody is really special. The universe is so vast that this planet is a tiny little sand grain, just a pebble. Just existing through the accident of evolution. So much chaos and death *sigh*. What is wrong with the human species and this planet.

The price of gas is rising, the cost of living is rising, our politicians and people in power are corrupt and psychopaths (same could be said for ALL world leaders, not just in a certain country). Really, what is the point. Everything is just..hopeless. The way our society is so superficial and shallow as well. People putting too much emphasis on clothes, how certain people look , the crap on TV ( I don't watch it, but hear about it). I mean, really?

I guess I think about this so much because losing loved ones is  the hardest thing to deal with in life. All the chaos in this world, I think of the all the people that not only lost their lives, but their loves ones as well. Its just so depressing. The only thing I can really do is continue to treat people the way I wanted to be treated, just focus on me, I can only control myself. But sometimes its just so hard when you hear or see that news headline of a lunatic doing something so heartless.

It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this and how you cope.

Also, does anyone else feel the same way perhaps? Peace.

CecilChups
You know, it really doesn't matter. You might decide that life is pointless and that there's no purpose, but so what? Chances are that you still like things such as videogames, running water, internet access, a comfortable air conditioned home, and the occasional chance to get laid. Which means that god or no god, you're still gonna have to go to work, pay your bills, and keep yourself presentable unless you want to turn into some kind of bum.

i would probably be more depressed knowing there's a superior being monitoring the world and then allowing things like the Holocaust, apartheid government, and aids/cancer to created/exist.

To me, the world would be infinitely more depressing if there were a creator. Fortunately for us, there isn't a boogie-man in the sky guiding us to our deaths, or to heaven. Only fate as we determine it.

What a terrible way to see things.  You just need to know where to look, you are only seeing what you choose to.  There is as much beauty in the world as there is ugliness.  How you decide to view and live your life around it is only up to you. I'm a pessimist myself, but even I can easily say there is always hope and it's very possible to see all the good among the bad.

I've been trying that for years. Then something comes along and it changes my perception again. It's just so, SO negative in the world in general. I don't see how you do it.

Also, knowing humanity will kill itself out of selfishness and greed really doesn't help matters. We had it all and now we will destroy it all. I just feel sorry for the planet itself that it has to deal with our species.

Exactly. This is why I couldn't be a pure atheist. SO many questions and the universe/universes are so GIGANTIC. So many stars with the possibility of another civilization that lives in a world thats mainly good and very little bad ever happening if at all. Its kind of fascinating to think about actually.

[QUOTE="ShadowsDemon"] I don't agree with everything he's saying, but he's partly right. This world is really fvcked up.CecilChups

and yet it's the most healthy and peacful time in human history.  Calling things hopeless because you turned on fox news or cnn is a sign of bigger issues.

It's alright, it really doesn't matter anymore. I take comfort in knowing that someday I won't exist on earth. Its kind of liberating.

You know what I take comfort in that too And judging by your posts It will be sooner rather than later...

[QUOTE="CecilChups"] Its IMPOSSIBLE to be positive in a world where greed is rampant, cost of everything is going up, gas is becoming unaffordable and our leaders are psychopaths and corrupt. Face it, there IS no hope.CecilChups

I tend to believe that the harsher things get for people, the more prone they are to become positive.  Almost like it's necessary to survive.  I also agree with others to ignore much of what you see and hear.  It's the information age, you hear about all the bad in the blink of an eye from everywhere every day, and nothing garners more attention than coverage of negative news events.

I find Bill Waterson put it best:

"It's not denial. I'm just selective about the reality I accept."
