But wouldn't that be 'forcing' kids to exercise? Why can't a healthy diet and exercise be promoted equally?
Necrifer
There's already forced exercise.
That's my point, why can't kids have both? It's not like having a gym period once or twice a week is going to offset a regular unhealthy diet, both are needed for a healthy lifestyle
I'm fine with it. I'm not sure what's worse. The fact that flavored milk is the norm in schools, or the fact that parents whine about their children no longer getting it like it's the end of the world. So many parents say it's up to them to keep their child healthy, no one should tell them how to do it. But they're not keeping their child healthy. If you can't support ONE less unhealthy item in your child's diet, there's an issue.

Educating children on a healthy diet and letting them decide what to eat seems like the most logical option to me.
Because chocolate milk is freaking great and a great way for kids to get their calcium. School white milk stinks.I'm fine with it. I'm not sure what's worse. They aren't telling you you can't drink chocolate milk in your home. Seems like they're trying to set a healthy standard for schools.
Then this quote might interest you..... "If chocolate milk is the only milk children drink, we want to be able to offer it because of the nutrition it holds ... It takes a variety of foods to get that same nutrition," said nutrition specialist Debbi Beauvais. "Research shows when chocolate milk is removed from schools, one-third of the children no longer drank milk. They don't come back and drink its white counterpart." And last I checked...what one chooses to eat/drink for lunch is still one's own choice.[QUOTE="binpink"]Because chocolate milk is freaking great and a great way for kids to get their calcium. Regular milk used to make me gag when I was a kid. I always drank chocolate milk not just because I preferred it, but because it was better than getting no calcium in my diet at all.
I'm probably going to ruffle a few feathers but....I don't think there should be public school lunches. Why should you let big brother do the parents job? Is feeding kids the governments job?DroidPhysXThey have found in poor districts the kids skip meals....so the school provides one...sometimes two meals. Andif the child brings lunch from home....the milk still has to be provided at the school. Or should kids bring pop from home?
That's actually a very common misconception according to the natural path doctor my mother saw qeadHe was wrong. Man they should change the food they served rather than worrying about Chocolate milk. The food they served at my school was horribly bad for you. Or at least it looked like it.CoolSkAGuyAs I recall....tasted bad as well.:P

If a parent refuses to give their child any milk at home, that's their problem. But otherwise of course children prefer chocolate if it's all they've been given at school and home. If the healthier standard had been set from day one and chocolate milk was never a choice, they'd like the taste of white milk just fine (most kids, some hate all milk obviously). I don't see why children need all these opportunities to make unhealthy choices. I just don't think that's a priority in life. Teach them about healthier options and actually feed them healthier options from the time they're very young and you won't have to fight them about it later.
Since when is chocolate milk unhealthy? There's a difference between "unhealthy" and "still healthy, just not quite as healthy as the other stuff, but that's the trade off for making it taste awesome".
 If that isn't the silliest slippery slope arguments I've ever heard, I don't know what is. God forbid the school stops providing chocolate milk in it's own cafeteria. If your kids want it, they should bring it from home.majoras_wrathexaclty..soon it will be that you can;t bring lunches from home because other kids will feel bad that your kid gets this and other's don't....or you're using white bread that's unhealthy compaired to wheat....the thing is..the slippery slope argument is only obsurd when it's used against things you agree with....more times than not govt ends up taking more and more liberties...is the earth going to come to an end because kids can't get chocolate milk in school?..absolutely not...but it never ends there..next week tehre will be some other evil that our "representatives" have to save us from....
I don't see why there is even any need to get rid of healthy food like this some people have too much time on their hand.
for the record...I never even liked chocolate milk in school....but I just hate when people can't keep their nose out of other's business....Omni-SlashTrue. I don't drink chocolate milk at all. However, J ONLY will drink chocolate milk. I'd rather that was an option than no milk at all. And I don't like people involved in things that don't concern them myself.

Did you try any alternatives to dairy milk?
If I remember correctly the school I went to only offered 2% and chocolate. I rarely packed lunches from home.
[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="comp_atkins"] true but they don't have to make every option available at the school do they?comp_atkinsSome kids don't drink regular milk. Milk is necessary in the diet. I'd rather they drank a pint of chocolate than none at all.... vegetables are necessary in the diet, should they be covered in sugar to get kids to eat them?Sugar is only a problem if it's a major component of a diet and if there is little or no exercise. Not a big deal if it's a pint of a milk five times a week followed by recess and running around.;)
vegetables are necessary in the diet, should they be covered in sugar to get kids to eat them?comp_atkinsno..but some put spices and butter on them....I'm not looking to end that either...

He said when he was a kid. Kids don't buy their own groceries. They eat/drink whatever their parents bring home. How many kids in the world are going to say "mom, could I try some soy milk as an alternative means of getting the vitamins and minerals I need to grow up big and strong"?

It wasn't until about the 12th grade where my school started serving this fruit salad with cottage cheese and saltine crackers and smucker PB&Js that I actually started eating that cruddy food.

BTW I made a mistake..a school milk carton is 1/2 pint of milk....or 8 ounces.....Omni-SlashSo that comes out to 2 1-2 pints a week....I can see where it's the major problem. Not the junk food kids eat...not sitting in front of a TV or computer all night. The chocolate milk. Teh evil....
We never had chocolate milk at school. Only regular milk... and I'm not even sure schools have that anymore (in the UK).SolidSnake35This and I used to just read through milk break because I don't like the stuff :P
it's likely both.this is ridiculous, it's not the food that is making the kids fat, it's the lack of exercise.

I was thinking if his parents noticed that he didn't like white milk maybe they'd have him try something else. Some parents do notice things like that.

I'm for this, they should then ban everything unhealthy in the US and infact ban all added ingredients to foods, we should just be eating raw lettuce with raw onions and drinking water because that's the healthy way. Forget taste man, who cares? It's all about forcing people to be healthy which is a good thing! Right??
