I think chocolate milk should be allowed at schools. If parents want less sugar in their kid's diets, they should start reducing sugar at home.

I thought decisions like this were precisely what the more local branches of government were supposed to make. If a decision like what the school should serve can't be made at this level, where should it be made?

Chocolate milk at school sounds a bit strange to me, whats wrong with normal milk? Here in England chocolate milk is almost always called a milkshake and is loaded with full fat milk/sugar, i agree they do taste pretty good but i don't think this is something young kids should be drinking on a regular basis. Make it like a cooked breakfast, an occasional treat.

The government isn't dictating anyones actions - no ones saying anyone can't drink chocolate milk, this school just is going to stop serving it at lunch. There is no right to chocolate milk at the school cafeteria...no ones liberty is being infringed by this.

Although to be fair there has been some movement on this front as a Chicago school recently banned children from bringing sack lunches from home unless they have a medical excuse/needs. A single lone example to be sure but sometimes if you give an inch and all that jazz...

Personally I think it should be up to parents what their kids do and do not eat. I suppose it would be impossible to tell your kids to not drink chocolate milk...once they get to school they'll probably drink it anyway. Still it should at least be a school decision as to whether they have chocolate milk or not. We never had chocolate milk in school and I never really cared...I have a strange feeling that was mostly because our school was cheap though.

 Man give it a break. They aren't infringing on your rights to drink chocolate milk, just making an executive decision to not sell sugar drinks to children. If your kids want it so bad, send them with chocolate milk. Mountains out of molehills, jeez.

I'm inclined to disagree. I've disagreed with LJ on a lot of issues, and I myself am a Libertarian. I think the only point he was truly attempting to make was that this barring of selling a food item is a small step into a larger set of steps designed to take the power out of the parent's hands, and into the government's hands. Just because 51% of parents want their children to not drink chocolate milk, that shouldn't cause the other 49% to suffer who do not care what their children drink OR tell their kids to not buy sugary drinks.

Chocolate milk isn't really unhealthy. I could see if it was pop or some such....

Relative to what is available, no, it is not unhealthy. Specifically for active, growing kids.

But, again with the nutrition-nazi angle, it is taking a wholesome product (milk) and adulturating with added sugar, flavor, chemicals, and more.

I am playing Devil's Advocate here; when I went to school, we were served stuff that'd make a 21st century Politically-correct-food-nazi cringe and most of the people I know are active, healthy adults now.

Haha but the two become so blurred at times I have a hard time making the distinction... I myself love arguing, but most of the users on this forum (notable ones anyway) are so obsessed with being counter-cultured that it's not even worth it. LOL at them thinking school lunches are even close to healthy....LOL freakin LOL. i dont know about anyone else but in my years of school (1-12) the schools lunches were iffy at best and usually anything but actually healthy. you know why i wasnt fat? oh ya i went outside and played. of course granted i grew up as the nes was becoming popular so gaming wasnt all the rage but still that is the solution here. recess, play outside at home, and not getting rid of gym class.

I never argue to argue. I made a simple statement in this thread about what I believe from what I've seen happening. If anything it was the other person that found a thread pages back and quoted it in an aggressive manner. Now that is the definition that someone that wants to argue....not debate. I see no reason why I should have to back off a discussion because someone doesn't agree with me. I generally provide proof of my points.....something many of those arguing with me do not do. I discuss. But I will not run from a discussion either.

Next time you have something to say about me....say it TO me. Thanks....

They should. Apparently chocolate milk has more fat than a Big Mac burger. I understand the sugar thing because sugar is what makes the chocolate taste good but why does it have to have so much fat? That just seems like ridiculous.GladlyHandly

Uh, the fat comes from the milk. You just want to give them a glass of chocolate powder?
