I can see why a lot of people don't want to be Christians...

Last night at church the pastor was saying that you have to be as "perfect as possible" to get into heaven. No human being can be perfect. They talk about God's love and mercy and then turn around and say you're gonna go to hell anyway. People can believe in God, have faith in him, worship him, thank him, be kind and loving to others and help those in need but if they check out a hot girl or drink a beer or say a cuss word they're automatically going to hell regardless. That crap right there ticks me off but makes me scared and nervous at the same time.

It really sucks for them to tell you that God loves you and is on your side and that you have the power to do whatever your heart desires, and then say you're gonna go to hell anyway if you're not perfect. I don't think the pastors are as "perfect as possible" either.

I believe in God and Jesus but I don't believe that God would send someone to hell just because they're not 100% pure and holy in everything they do if he's a loving God. I've accepted Jesus as my savior and I care about other people.

That's why I'm not a Christian. I can't understand how God can throw you down into hell to suffer forever and ever but can still be loving. I believe in God, just not that nonsense.

I like the way you quoted three words, and then immediately ignored two of the three.

I mean the point is that God wants us to accept Jesus as our savior, so why would he send us to hell anyway after doing so? Wouldn't God want us to be individuals and not do everything a certain way? It would really suck to know that even though I care about people and love them and help them out and am thankful for all the gifts and blessings in my life, all that doesn't matter and I'm going to hell anyway.

There were very few of us there because it was raining..and these were young people 12 to 20 years old. The pastor was talking about "keeping the fire for God burning in your heart" and stuff among those lines. He was like "you're going to hell if you're not living 100% holy" and then "you're dismissed".

I don't want to burn in hell, obviously. It gives me joy to believe in God, worship him and fellowship with others and love them but because I did or said "x" non-holy things, I'm going to hell regardless of that.

Was that a baptist church? I understand that some denominations have different tactics. Last time I went to a baptist church I sat through an hour of a guy telling me that when you give a church money, your not actually giving to the church, your giving it to god.

That's what repentence is for. Since humans aren't perfect, why beat yourself up over small sins?

there are two types of sins. mortal and venial. porn and such would be classified as venial, while murder or abortion is mortal. also, if you cannot be convinced its all hocus-pocus, just go to confession and quit whining on the forums, dammit

religion is big business and a way to rally people for war (way back when, but now its the equivelent to politics) so dont worry and just believe what you want for yourself. if you lead a good life and believe in something, im sure you will be ok

Personally I can't see why more people want to be atheist. I mean the wonderment and questioning of nature and reality is what continues driving me forward toward finding new information and improving my knowledge of the world around us. And atheism can do the same for you to. The key idea to atheism is, 'There is so much unfound and undiscovered knowledge in the natural world the drive to reach it is only made more powerful by it's followers' Atheism doesn't concern being scared to commit to something or being evil and denouncing God. The majority of atheists are also agnostic in that they know God can not be proven nor disproven but until He is epistomologically proven they will live their lives as if there is no God and they will make their own rules based on their own personal morals and the morals of society as a whole.

I don't really feel like talking to the pastor about it so I may talk to one of my friends about it. It's the youth pastor for the middle school to college-age group; not the main pastor.

it's called repentance... most aren't really christians, if people practiced what they preached the world probably wouldn't be like this, see all the so-called "christian" politicians. sick of these frauds using their religion as a tool to get votes, sick of these phones using their religion as some way to prove they're good. They're christians in NAME ONLY.

The bible says nothing about cussing actually, just don't use his name in vain, I say all the words when they're appropriate (usually to myself) but I never use God's name with them.

He doesn't expect you to be perfect, but to do your best... and when the world is like this it's hard, when you have the pressures of other religions/no-religion it's hard, it's hard to keep faith, but you must be strong and it's not for the weak to be a REAL christian, which I'm sure is the largest minority. People are so easily manipulated by comedians on tv that they think all christians are like x-dumbass, it's like saying because x-person did this, they're all like that! look at Bush, he wasn't a conservative, but most people think he is because of some of the issues he sides on, it makes the rest of the conservatives look bad, vice versa with liberals.

I just ignore people, accept when I'm directly challenged for my views but generally ignore it and not push my religion on anyone. I believe church should be separated from state almost completely, while it's obvious that this nation was founded on christian values, I don't want to push anything on anyone.

okay i dont like to speak on religion much because i have had problems with churches in general, but from the few people i trust regarding religion, showing me in the king james bible, i belive this, god created everything, we screwed it all up and got kicked out of the garden of eden, then really screwed it up and god flooded the earth, we kept on screwing it up so he sent jesus, a physical embodyment of god himself, perfect without sin, who died as a willing sacrifice for sin, much like the animal sacrifice of old testement, and through his sacrifice, my sin is forgiven, once accepted as my savior, i go to heaven, period, no matter how bad i screw up, no church can make you holy enough, no scholar can make you wise enough, it is a gift, you must ask for it, by repenting. people who teach you can earn your way into heaven, or lose your salvation, are underselling the power of the sacrifice jesus made on calvery. the funny thing about religion, the more religoius you get, the farther you seem to get away from god. the most godly people i knowthink of themselves asno more than servents but those who feel they are the embodiment of god are the most vile wreches i have ever met.
