OK Computer isn't even Radiohea's best album. Mostly everything they have release since then is better actually.

DmadFearmonger

I thought I was the only one who thought that! :D

I disagree totally. I think everything past Kid A is crap. radiohead is just getting more strange and more strange. I wish they would just go back to writing songs. It just feels like they are cutting and pasting music together that is wierd for the sake of wierd. Listen to "exit music" or "Karma Police" or "no surprises", then listen to King Of Limbs as a whole... the songs just arent there.

I listened to The King of Limbs yesterday. I own the Newspaper edition I love it that much. Hail to The Thief and In Rainbows are both Post Kid-A and they're my favorite albums. They write complex music. Their old stuff is just commercial rock. That's the only reason people prefer it. Not saying It's bad, It's by no means bad. But It' s inferior.

You guys are all ridiculous. I love The Killers. I love Joy Division. All of that 80's new wave/post punk. I like the revival of it too. The Killers write great pop songs. "Mr Brightside" is undeniable. Joy Division were one of those groups that helped form the "post punk" movement, which led to electronica. All these bands PLAY THE SAME KIND OF ****. Who cares who is "original". The power is in the song. I cry during "atmosphere". But that was 30 years ago. Its time for new music. and Ian Curtis was a crap singer. Rest in peace :(

If you can't accept any music after 1997 I feel sorry for you, because you're missing out on a lot of amazing stuff. In my opinion there has never been a bad year for music, if you just look (and possibly expand your horizons), you'll see that there are plenty of great artists (even *gasp* mainstream ones) making great music all the time.

This song by Joy Division is over 30 years old, yet it still has emotion.

Im not arguing that Joy Division's music wasnt full of emotion. Of course it was. Im saying that there is nothing wrong with modern bands playing the same genre, people saying The Killers suck and Joy Division rocks? Thats stupid. Joy Division came first, so what? The power is in the song, boys. Not the genre name dropping, or whoever "did the sound" first. Thats pretentious.

You can stop right there. If, by electronica, you mean stuff like Gary Numan's "Cars," then you can leave me out of that conversation. I prefer music with actual instruments, instead of ones programmed into a computer (sort of like this).

How would you define grunge? By attitude or the dirty sonic aesthetic/fuzzbox sound? Regardless I would argue grunge really died with Nirvana – sure bands took on the shape of what was popularly deemed as grunge, but really it was bands acting as curators to past genre and keeping the grunge aesthetic alive.

If you're talking specifically about underground movements such as grunge bubbling up into the mainstram and then disapearing, then I guess it's just the constant swing between culture and counter culture. Punk rose up as a backlash to the emergence of 70s stadium rock. Post punk was borne out of punk's 3-chord rock simplicity. Grunge/Indie (and it was more aligned to the indie scene than rock scene in my memory) could be argued was a counterpunch to both contrived processed rock at the time or the numerous A&R-created boy bands of the 80s. It was inevitable that the tide for grunge and Brit pop in the 90s would eventually draw back (both retrospective genres) and in their place a futurist or kitsch genre would take their place.

It's not a question of music dying, more with age we can trace the constant recycling of genres, and perhaps grow a little cynical with the cyclical nature of musical styles.

On the other hand you could argue that the music industry is dying, principally because of the emergence of file sharing/illegal downloading is slowly asphyxiating the earning capacity of artists. As it's increasingly hard to make a living from actually selling records and become self-sustaining entities, it'll drive away bands who 20 years ago would have been able to build some semblance of a career.

In turn this has an impact on the music industry and the kind of music we see released, geared towards a less-tech-savvy older audience or younger crowd who are reliant upon parents to procure music for them (Susan Boyle is no doubt a dream artist for a label I would think). So the date music died hasn't happened – it's just being killed off slowly.

Creep wasn't even Radiohead's song.

It was the Hollies from 1974, and I think Thom Yorke apologized to them later on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bb7S8-Iewi0

I'm saying nothing of the kind. Some of my favorite music is derived from the hardcore side of the punk movement, and that's where I'm comfortable. If you want to compare electronic music, that's fine... leave me out of it. ;)

Creep and High and Dry are two of Radioheads worst achievements. No Surprises is fairly boring too.

You make a lot of blanket statements. Those 3 songs are bad because their popular? and how can you have a "worst achievement"? Those 3 songs have touched many people, and youve just written them off.

Listen to the harmony during the chorus, this was magic on stage. And it would be odd if the crowd wasn't screaming in the beginning.

I disagree. Bloody people creaming at the intro. No consideration. We wanna listen to the music, not you screaming >.>

Listen to the harmony during the chorus, this was magic on stage. And it would be odd if the crowd wasn't screaming in the beginning.

Nah, I'll keep listening to the Godly King of Limbs 'cause It's better than The Bends :P

Sorry I just can't stand his voice, nor his attitude. overall, I find their music bland.

You will love this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQKjI6395iU

Eh.. sounds like the average pop rock song to me. Porcupine Tree is as "light" as I get

You might as well stop trying to "convert me" :D

This is the stuff I listen too, hard for me to get into music like that.

Wow, that was a horrible timeline. Music isn't dead at all. If you don't like current pop music then there are tons of other genres to choose from including trip-hop, dark cabaret, tons of subgenres of metal such as symphonic and gothic metal, real country music (not the pop country, that's pretty bad), a lot of stuff coming from Europe, pop punk, punk (it still exists in the underground of basically every town/community), alt rock, adult contemporary, art rock, and tons more. Listen to artists like Birdeatsbaby (dark cabaret), Epica (symphonic metal), Tori Amos (alt rock and other), Kate Bush (alt rock/art rock), Hannah Fury (idk), Emilie Autumn (victoriandustrial as she puts it), and yeah there's a lot.

On that note I will agree. Pablo Honey is crap.

So the date music died hasn't happened – it's just being killed off slowly.poptart

I almost want to agree with you on this, but I can't. Traditionally, bands made more money from live shows and touring than they ever did from album sales; every musician friend I have backs me up on that one. You can have the crappiest record sales in the world, but as long as you can put on a killer live show, you can support yourself quite nicely, provided you have the energy to tour relentlessly, and can pry out time to put out the occasional studio album to promote.

I took one look at the font of the album covers and got scared. Now, this is the last one. It was the most requested song of the decade in the UK. Try it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1gLGjPFkRA

Sure you can make money from touring if manage to attract the requisite level of interest to fill a venue, however if you're a small indie band and think you'll make money from cruising the country then it's highly unlikely (more likely make a loss). Looking back at the later part of the 80s indie scene bands rarely expected to make any money from it. My oldest friend has been a tour manager for years, largely taking US bands around Europe (they often start that way then work back into the US). They rarely made money – often a loss. On the other hand he's been the tour manager for the Gossip a few times and surethey make money from touring (and merchandise).
