Hard to say. I think a lot of the reason homosexuality is looked upon as vile or wrong in our society is because of the prominence and importance we give to the Mosaic Laws. If you look at ancient Greece, heterosexual unions had to be mandated as a form of population maintenance because of how widespread same-sex relationships were, and that was a simple difference of cultural perspective.
I'm not saying it's 100% choice, because studies that I've seen compel me to think otherwise, and I could never bring myself to have any sort of sexual contact with another man. I do, however, believe that it's at least somewhat an issue of social conformity that starts early in life. Again I'd point to the relatively casual stance of the Greek and Roman empires on homosexuality as supporting evidence. It was such a different world from ours.
